BONES: Hart Hanson on Episode Shuffling and Teases Episode 10

January 20, 2011 by

So I believe a few of you are excited that BONES returns with a brand new episode tonight?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

There is some really fun stuff coming up in 2011: the start of the sniper arc, some progress with a certain love triangle and much more.

When I chatted with BONES creator Hart Hanson at the recent Fox All-Star party, he talked about the complications of changing up the episode order, Booth being a good man and teased a little bit about the latest bit of drama between Brennan-Booth-Hannah…

Don’t forget BONES premieres tonight in its new timeslot at 9 PM after AMERICAN IDOL!

Hart Hanson scares me. The more he and Nathan talk, the more they depress me about the show.
What they see, what they think it’s fun (the triangle for example), what they think it’s right to the charachters, it’s all so very far away from the way I have understood this show.
I said once that season 6 makes me feel stupid, because I don’t get it. I don’t get the charachters, I don’t get the dynamics (a friendship between Hannah and Brennan? Crazy for me).
I don’t watch tv to feel bad, I do it to feel good.
I thought Hanson was one of the best writers in term of creating and developing charachters. Now I’m not saying he’s not, just that I’m not good enough to GET and enjoy what he writes.
I have been angry, and I have been sad. Now simply the magic is gone.

  2. poodle on January 20th, 2011 6:01 pm

A ‘few’ people looking forward to tonight is about right, yes.

Chris, I couldn’t agree more. I just don’t know what they did to these characters. It makes me so sad and I just don’t understand what they were thinking.

  3. poodle on January 20th, 2011 6:05 pm

Also, I just think there has been a massive chasm this season between what they think they’re showing us and what they actually show us. I don’t think it’s a case of it being the audience’s fault. So, who does that leave?

  4. ama on January 20th, 2011 6:07 pm

Marisa, you are fierce! I love it!!

Thanks for asking questions that we fans really wanted answered and persisting even when Hart Hanson tried evading the issues or feeding you BS.

  5. Linda on January 20th, 2011 6:18 pm

Marisa, again, thanks for asking the questions. Again, I don’t like the answers. I find his responses depressing, and so out of touch with what I am seeing on my TV screen. Really, what has happened to Bones…..

  6. Shannon on January 20th, 2011 6:19 pm

Totally agree with Hart! I never thought Booth changed at all! Booth left DC with a broken heart. Who knows what he saw or did over in Afghanistan, but he was there broken hearted and in a war zone. Along comes Hannah, his escape. He falls in love with her and for a while those feelings for Brennan dissipated. Then he returns to DC and realized that those feelings for Brennan were still there. Now he was conflicted. Right as he was trying to figure that all out, surprise! Hannah arrives in DC!! It wasn’t that Booth treated Brennan poorly, he was just trying to distance himself from those feelings. Now to top it all off, here comes Brennan opening up and telling him she made a mistake and guess what she wants to have a relationship with him! Booth is now completely confused. Booth, being the FBI crime solver with hard fists and a lion heart, is not just going to say, “Okay, Hannah, it’s been great, but Bones just got a clue and wants a relationship now. So, yeah I’m breaking up with you” Booth is going to (try) do the right thing. That’s Booth! Only time will tell what Hanson and Nathan will do to these characters. But, no matter what, I love this show and I trust that they will give us fans what we want. I fully believe that B&B fans will love Hannah in the end because it will be Hannah after all that brings them closer together!

  7. sue on January 20th, 2011 6:21 pm

Making sure that the viewers don’t realize they changed the order? They have to be the show with the most continuity errors EVER anyway, so why would he worry about that of all things?
And isn’t it kinda sad that Marisa knows about ten times more about every episode than HH? No wonder the show has started to go downhill. It has nothing to do with Hannah/Booth/Brennan imo, but everything with continuity errors and sloppy writing.

  8. Joann on January 20th, 2011 6:26 pm

Not as clever as he thinks.

HH just grates on my nerves now. I’m keeping one eye on the show out of massive affection for Brennan 1.0. But he is just flaming the fanbase’s schadenfreude sentiments.

But even if he didn’t and he was the most gracious man in showbiz, the amount of “explanation” (mostly BS) and fanwanking that this season requires means the storytelling has been an epic fail. And it’s not frothy fun either.

  9. poodle on January 20th, 2011 6:27 pm

    I will never love Hannah.

I don’t even know if I want/care about BB together anymore. It feels ruined.

I want the show back that I used to love. The one with awesome lines, sizzling chemistry and fabulous supporting cast. They seem to have forgotten about them.

  10. Gen on January 20th, 2011 6:34 pm

I agree mostly with Shannon. I do think Booth is a bit colder towards Brennan, but not without good reason. I trust that Hart and everyone else will make everything right again. I don’t think anything/anyone has changed that much this season. The show has changed a lot since seasons 1 and 2, but this season seems consistant with the last few seasons. I’m not giving up on Bones anytime soon.

    Thanks for the great interview!

  11. Joann on January 20th, 2011 6:36 pm

PS- I agree with other comments about Marissa’s reporting. My negativity directed entirely at the show.

  12. Eve on January 20th, 2011 6:43 pm

There is just a disconnect about what they say is going on and what I see.
Booth may have had to react that way but it was cold. They will justify Booth not telling Hannah the whole truth. They will justify all of Booth’s actions.
Brennan will remain the lonely, pathetic woman who rejected Booth and is now suffering the consequences. No moving on for Brennan. She will just be comforted by stories from her new BFF Hannah.

They have taken the strong independent, Brennan and reduced her to a lovesick fool.

I don’t care at this point. Keep Hannah, let Brennan move on with her own story, and just have the two become work friends again. This story line is just depressing and it Sucks Big Time.

  13. Drippan on January 20th, 2011 6:55 pm

    Marisa,

Please take the crack pipe and do a drug analysis on Hart before you interview him again!

This interview is more proof that they want to keep B&B seperated vice them telling an ‘organic’ tale.

  14. KO on January 20th, 2011 6:56 pm

Regarding all the Booth defense explanations- I already get all of that. It’s perfectly understandable, but it doesn’t explain away the criticisms. Like Eve and Joann above have said, there’s a big disconnect.

    1) The idea of Hannah as a safety net for Booth makes sense.–> Actual character and actress are boring at best.

    2) It makes sense that Booth is more distant, even ok that he’s colder. –> No one is acknowledging this. It’s not that Booth has to be perfect, but why are we seeing a flawed Booth and being told he’s acting normal/”well”/”moral”?

    3) Booth the sad romantic reject has taken over Booth the great friend. Again, it’s understandable, but no one is acknowledging that he hasn’t been much of a friend to the Jeffersonian team, including Bones herself. If the reason for this is to show how hurt Booth was, I’m not seeing it on screen. I do see reasonable fanwanking about this, but for me, it undermines Booth the friend role from earlier seasons- like he was only a good friend because he had romantic motivations.

Not to mention the already hashed out problems of Booth in the lab and Brennan turning into some lonely spinster (if that’s the only way to show her regret for Booth, it’s not much of a romance).

  15. Issa on January 20th, 2011 7:07 pm

I don’t see independent and warm-hearted growth in Bones from her “friendship” with Hannah. I see pathetic hanger-on who fetches stuff for the head cheerleader because she’s in love with the cheerleader’s QB boyfriend and would do anything to stay close. As many of you have noted, it’s not because the idea of Bones embracing anyone who makes Booth happy doesn’t make sense. It’s just that the actual impression I’m getting from the show is more like a HS drama than believable emotional growth.

~and I need to stop watching because it’s unhealthy to feel so disappointed by a tv character.

  16. Kim on January 20th, 2011 7:18 pm

The Bones I am watching and the one that Hart seems to think he is producing is not the same. The reason Hart is so agitated in the interview is that by now he has to know how much this storyline has failed with the audience. Hart has this separate Bones storyline running through his head and only he is privy to it. Wish he would have written and chosen to tell that story so I wouldn’t be so lost and confused. Season six has left me with a poor pathetic Brennan, Booth acting cold and jerky, and a new character that has totally destroyed a show I used to love. Yes it is fictional, but it was my one guilty pleasure in entertainment television. I am upset that they have taken it away from me.

  17. EL on January 20th, 2011 7:23 pm

I think HH is listening to voices that no one else can hear. He’s certainly seeing a show that no one else can see. He looks as if he needs a long vacation. Maybe viewers do too.

  18. Bonesfan47 on January 20th, 2011 8:16 pm

Great interview as always Marisa!!! As far as the change with Booth in season 6 I only noticed that with episode 7 at the end of the episode when he left to have sex with Hannah when Angela and Hodgins were announcing their pregnancy and that did upset me greatly but that was the only thing that Booth did that got me upset.

  19. Holly on January 20th, 2011 9:21 pm

I’m over B&B, I want more of Cam and Hodgin and Angela with Brennan. Booth is so far from the man he use to be it’s not funny. I’m okay with Booth being the lead in the spinoff and HH hiring new FBI agent to work with Bren and the Squints.

  20. LL on January 20th, 2011 9:34 pm

It’s Bones time and I am waiting for ESPN360 to load tennis. But even when AO is over, I will be watching Parks & Recreations.

Like many others here, I was ok with Booth moving on/away, but this absolute refusal to acknowledge Booth’s responsibility in the situation while Bones withers in loneliness culminating in the last episode was too much for me. Will keep tabs on Angela’s baby and Cam’s career online (like they’re my real life friends, I know, crazy).

  21. Vicki on January 20th, 2011 9:42 pm

I have loved this show for so long. Season 6 is NOT the show I would have ever even continued to watch. I can’t stand the man they have turned Booth into, Hannah is just annoying and has taken away so much of the other characters’ story time. No chemistry, very little Hodgela, hardly any squints, and cases are so back burner. This is not my BONES. I agree that entertainment should not be frustrating and diappointing. It should be enjoyable and an escape from real life. Tired of HH saying,”this happens in real life.” I don’t watch scripted reality TV or any other so-called reality TV. Where is the science, where is the Jefersonian family we all grew to love? I have about had it and would rather quit watching more of this and remember Bones for what it was and not what it has become.

  22. LL on January 20th, 2011 9:52 pm

“Tired of HH saying,”this happens in real life.””

–> That ship of organic development sailed 2~3 seasons ago. They’ve kept viewers entertained before the latest Contrivance, but lets not pretend this is like real life or that Bones follows a Mad Men kind of character development. I used to have fun.

  23. EL on January 20th, 2011 10:08 pm

LL, you put your finger on it exactly. It just isn’t fun anymore.

  24. ct on January 20th, 2011 11:15 pm

wow. just watched the episode. my loyalty to this show is gone. i’m out. horrendous hour tonight. booth is the biggest douche ever, and this show has devolved in an almost unimaginable manner. done.

  25. ct on January 20th, 2011 11:16 pm

oh, and also? the faux friendship is so bad it’s painful. that last seen reeked of desperate writers.

  26. Varti on January 20th, 2011 11:25 pm

“just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re in the right.” Ricky Gervais

–> Words for HH to take to heart as he gets hypersensitive about the fans’ criticism.

My eyes are rolling so hard at the Brennan-Hannah “friendship” right now.

  27. Josephsen79 on January 20th, 2011 11:41 pm

I just finished watching “The Body in the Bag” and while it was not the best episode of the season it was not the worst either. I don’t want to do any spoilers for those that might not have seen it yet (I am on the East Coast). I am a Hannah hater as much as the next person, but I do believe after watching tonights episode that her time is running out. Probably not as quickly as I would like, but we can’t have everything. There are some glimmers of hope, people! Believe me, I am not just a wide eyed optimist either. :o) I have been angry more times this season than I ever thought I would be over any TV show. I LOVE Bones, and I do think that what has been broken can still be fixed. It’s gonna take some time to be sure, but I am going to hang in for the ride.

    Great interviews as always, Marisa!

  28. Inspector Penny on January 20th, 2011 11:41 pm

Varti, were you reading HH’s twitter? I was following #Bones just now and saw that quote on HH’s twitter account.

It’s hilarious, I am betting HH aimed that at the fans, but wouldn’t dream of applying it to himself. But he has been super sensitive about criticism lately. It’s so transparent because he says he doesn’t think online fans matter, but is so offended by their criticism.
I feel like Marissa is the only reporter who actually asks him questions about the show instead of repeating PR material.

  29. Holly on January 20th, 2011 11:50 pm

After watching tonights episode, I know why they changed the order of the eps, they needed to get this episode out the way. Booth is a first class prick, there is no excuse for him sharing Bren opening up to him and telling him how she feels with anyone. Did anyone notice the Prick didn’t tell the whole story? Watching this eps after watching HH’s interview, I understand why Booth’s destruction is ongoingm, Hart doesn’t get it.

And please will someone tell whomever is writing the Bren/Hannah bff mess to top the stupidity. B&B’s chemistry has fizzled out move these two in totally different directions and save the show. Brennan needs to connect with the Squints and a new guy and Booth, well who gives a crap?

  30. Steph on January 21st, 2011 12:54 am

K, I just finished the episode and I (as well as everyone else) am extremely disappointed. Mainly because we did not get ANY B&B scenes. What is that? We got more Brennan & Hannah than we did Booth & Brennan. And the whole “no, I only feel that for you now” part of the scene was just completely unnecessary, IMO. We get the picture, writers..he’s in denial. What happened to the cocky belt buckle and tie? That pissed me off the most.

I’m never giving up on this show. I do trust the writers and how the hell are us fans going to get what we deserve if we don’t keep them on the air to give it to us?!

  31. Steph on January 21st, 2011 12:55 am

Oh, and I do agree that there seems to be some differences between what HH thinks is happening, and how the fans are taking it. People are not happy AT ALL.

  32. Kim on January 21st, 2011 1:29 am

The “friendship” between Bones and Hannah makes my skin crawl. I know she wants Booth to be happy but, COME ON!!!! This is not realistic and a little cat fight would be welcomed. I’d love to see Brennen fight for her man–not his new girlfriend—gag!! This Hannah story is dragging on WAY too long!

  33. JS on January 21st, 2011 7:28 am

The episode sucks, the season sucks, HH & SN are apparently living in the Twilight Zone. I have not seen as big a disconnect between what the writers of a show are saying they are doing and what viewers are actually seeing in a very long time.

  34. carl on January 21st, 2011 8:02 am

JUST watch the body in the bag online not all that good whats happen to booth that man needs attitude adjustment only thing good just a very brief scene between booth and hannah I THINK hart hanson and his writers needs to wakeup hannah is not liked./and emily has lost too much weight.

  35. marple on January 21st, 2011 10:26 am

So hh denies Booth being a sh*t jerk this season. That means they are never going to adress it. He actually sounds like he has never seen any episodes this season. That is scary. Booth this season was such a jerk all up to episode 7 at least, i haven´t watched further and after hearing this it doesn´t look like i can ever like it again,
Imo the only way to get it good again would probly be to dump Booth and let the others move on with their lives and continue their work. It could at least be interesting to watch again.

  36. emma on January 21st, 2011 2:41 pm

i cannot believe the way that they have wrecked the show. i mean it tore my heart out to hear brennan tell booth that she loved him but for him to be like o i am with hannah and now there is hardly any talk, flirting, chemistry or anything between BB. and brennan has been reduced to this shriveled lovesick person who is being completely stupid with the puns and lines that used to make her who she was i mean come on. they have turned booth into an asshole who cares more about this bitch (who he does not love for real) than he does about anyone else. i mean we even barely hear about parker anymore. it seems sweets is the only one who still sees that they should be together and is the only character that is reflecting anything the audience is feeling. the only thing i do love about the show is the progression of angelas and hodgins relationship. one of the only good things the writers did with this season. at this point i think the best thing that they can do is to remove hannah and try to salvage what is left of the show. i would rather watch reruns of the BONES that i fell in love with then watch the new season and be dissappointed over and over every week. unfortunately i am still hoping that they will do something right and undo what they have done, until then i will relish the old episodes and long for the times when the writers knew what they were doin.

  37. karen on January 21st, 2011 5:33 pm

I have not watched this season except for a couple of episodes and i won’t until they see the light and give the fans what they all want, lets face it thats why we watched them in the first place because of the chemistry between booth and brennan and the squints, its no wonder the ratings are going down, the writers need to get a grip and smell the roses or this series is over.

  38. CAN on January 21st, 2011 10:00 pm

I totally agree with emma. Booth has been cold, Brennan has been a stiff idiot (all of her progress in becoming more social was lost this season) and they don’t even seem like friends any more. The idea of Brennan being Hannah’s friend is just goofy in any dynamic. I think HH is just getting his jollies making the fans suffer. I hate to put it in terms of money, but he is sure making the likelihood of sales of DVDs go down as I am so disappointed about the direction of the show that I would never think of buying them. I am not sure they can straighten it out. Anything they do that doesn’t make Booth look like a jerk (Hannah dying, etc.) would just look contrived and they have gone too far with Booth and Hannah (unlike Brennan and Sully) so that Booth or Hannah will look silly if they say – oops, I was mistaken, you’re just not the one for me. Oh, well, NBC sure has some good shows on Thursday night . . .

  39. Bryn on January 22nd, 2011 9:16 am

I think in all fairness that they show is trying to extend it’s life but not letting it’s characters get together and almost all shows that do it, lose favour of the audience. It is amazing how they repeat the same mistakes again and again.

But that said, in my opinion, I think Brennan should stop going to the field for awhile and send out Cam or a Squintern. I think she needs to distance herself from Booth while she sorts out her feelings. Booth isn’t her friend anymore and she really has to accept that. Booth used to be the center of her world, which is why she fought so hard to protect their ‘partnership’ but it’s gone now. They used to share a drink, they used to chat, he used to mentor her in how to understand the world around her and it’s all gone. So she needs to step away from him and Hannah and find her own path, hopefully with some new friends (male would be nice). Someone else who sees the woman behind the brain and the sensitivity behnd the logic. I’d love to see her hook up with a prosecuter in one of the cases she works on, someone smart and logical but with a good/passionate heart. Only then will Booth truly understand if he’s truly happy with Hannah without Brennan. Only then can Brennan understand if she can open her heart to love.

  40. Mandy on January 23rd, 2011 1:38 pm

Hart shuffled the episodes, backburned Emily’s directing debut, all so the new viewers can see Emily’s character Brennan humiliated by her partner and running behind Hannah (a recurring character) begging for her friendship, unbelievable?

  41. Festina Lente on January 24th, 2011 8:50 pm

By this stage, I don’t really care if Booth and Brennan ever get together> it’s sad, because they were the first couple I ‘shipped like crazy and they probably remain one of my favorite OTPs (in their seasons 1-3 incarnations, that is).

But I do expect their breakup or any other storyline to be written with respect for the integrity of the characters, and so far I’m not seeing anything even remotely resembling that. I bawled my eyes out during the Angel/Buffy breakup in I Will Remember You, but I also bought it 200%, because it was done beautifully and it preserved the characters’ integrity. I’m not buying any of what is happening on Bones this season. I want kickass independent strong-willed Brennan back too, please! She’s a wreck and it’s neither pretty nor interesting to watch.

I’m tired of fanwanking every episode and thinking ‘but maybe, just maybe, the next one will be better’. Because I’m always wrong.

Also, please, someone do something that really bugged me the past couple of seasons on Bones: continuity errors even in important scenes (the hug scene in Boy with the Arrow, the diner scene with Hannah and Parker this season). Considering that most of the people involved make 100 times more money than I will ever make in my lifetime, it’s truly unprofessional.

Since we’re on this topic – the writers should also take some lessons from The Vampire Diaries, where (a) each storyline is wrapped up within maximum 3 episodes (crazy, isn’t it?); (b) continuity in terms of characterisation is truly amazing. God, I really do love that show!

  42. Nancy on January 26th, 2011 6:14 pm

I didn’t see this interview with HH until today. He didn’t sould like he knew what show he was talking about he kept looking at that crumbled piece of paper and he looked so confused. HH & the writers must have said, Oh man Bones is going so well let’s see how we can screw it up. Now he’s trying to put a positive spin about it and it’s not working I don’t want to give up on my favorite program but my patience is running thin. It used to be fun to watch now it’s painful. The real life crap isn’t any thing like real life. Brennan & Booth moving on so quickly the Brennan & Hannah becoming BF is so far remove from real life it’s laughable. And what they’ve done with Brennan & Booth makes me furious. The big change they made is a train wreck hopefully they will get it back on track.

  43. Margine on January 27th, 2011 1:54 pm

Some things are not clear to me:
1)Why did they even change the episode order? What’s the point of it? If HH said that six episodes are swapped, it means we’ll have to watch six episodes which are going to be similarly confusing as ‘The Body In The Bag’ which to me appeared very unnatural and unreal (so I assume they’re gonna mess up the whole show and I am very sad for that)

2)Why are they making a spinoff instead of focusing on repairing the show? I don’t care about that spinoff I want the show to go back as it was.
it seems like they are fed up with this show, don’t even know the episodes, are not truly involved in this and write it just for it to be written… If they want a new toy(show) the they should end ‘Bones’ in this season, and just move on… or let it to people who will care more about this show
