BONES: Hart Hanson Teases Family for Hodgins, Avalon’s Return and the Fate of the Squinterns

February 2, 2011 by

With BONES nearing the halfway point of season six, things are starting to come together, aren’t they? The multi-episode sniper arc kicked off last week with a fantastic episode. Cam’s love life will once again be front-and-center. And there are some really fun upcoming cases headed our way.

I chatted with BONES creator Hart Hanson about returning guest stars, which family member might soon be showing up for Hodgins, the fate of the squinterns, Daisy-Sweets and Avalon’s mystery piece of information…

Paul is back!

Elon Gold (Paul) returns to the series as Cam’s mostly-unseen boyfriend for two episodes this month, starting with Thursday’s “The Sin in the Sisterhood.” As BONES fans know, executive producer Stephen Nathan has teased there will be two proposals coming up…so are Cam and Paul one of the duos heading towards an engagement?

“I’m not telling you!” Hanson laughed, noting that he has never admitted anyone will propose at all.

However, for fans of Cam and Paul, there is hope the relationship won’t be ending anytime soon for those crazy kids. “We like that relationship,” Hanson admitted. Good news, right?

Which family member has Hodgins been hiding?

When I spoke with Michaela Conlin (Angela) last year, she speculated that Hodgins might have some family out there that fans hadn’t been aware of. Additionally, Nathan teased that viewers might be “finding out some secrets from Hodgins” in the second half of the season.

Hanson confirmed there are plans for Hodgins to gain a family member — but it’s on the back-burner for now. So why is the story being put on hold? And what will that person’s relation to Hodgins be?

The squinterns are getting work…does that mean Sweets-Daisy are doomed?

Since the fourth season, BONES has rotated a team of interns — AKA the squinterns — to help the Jeffersonian team solve cases. But with the news that Ryan Cartwright (Vincent Nigel-Murray) will be tied up with Syfy’s new series ALPHAS and Carla Gallo (Daisy) landing a lead in The CW’s pilot, DANNI LOWINSKI, will new squinterns be brought on to replace the duo? And what impact will Gallo’s potential new show have on the rekindled Sweets-Daisy relationship?

Hanson tackles those questions in the video below.

Which guest stars will be returning?

Fans have seen Patricia Belcher (Caroline) and Ryan O’Neal (Max) reappear in recent episodes of BONES and Billy Gibbons will be back soon as Angela’s pregnancy progresses. But will frequent guest star Stephen Fry (Gordon Gordon) or former series regular Eric Millegan (Zack) be showing up before season six ends?

“Stephen Fry is busy,” Hanson noted. “I don’t have a plan to have Eric back, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. I don’t have that story [written, though].”

However, the news is more positive where Cyndi Lauper (Avalon) is concerned.

“She is coming back,” Hanson said. “We just have to get her for the two days [we need her to film]. It’s fallen apart twice, but we have a story where we’re ready to go [when she’s free].”

When Hanson first teased Avalon’s important return back in September, he said that “she delivers a piece of information that is really crucial to the ongoing plot.” And while he refused to elaborate further at the time, a few months later he was little more willing to dish on Avalon’s mystery information.

When I inquired whether the news had to do with Booth and Brennan, Hanson said it didn’t. “It’s about someone else,” he said. “She has a lot of information.”

So who will be the recipient of Avalon’s insight? The only other person Hanson would rule out aside from B &B was Sweets.

Hmmm…

Theories BONES fans?

I can’t and won’t trust HH & writers until they address the problems from the 1st half of the season. Throwing new spoilers doesn’t work anymore.

I certainly don’t begrudge fans who are satisfied with DB and quick scenes like last week’s ending. At the same time, I am buoyed by other comments that are critical of the season long devolution of Brennan and the show’s insistence on Booth as the honorable, wronged man this season.

Yet another damage control effort, using the adorable Hodgins to make me click. Very political- denial + distraction. Thu ratings will be really interesting.

So apparently, the last spoiler about Michaela’s scene didn’t pan out?! Too bad.

I am bringing this over a discussion about BB growing and learning from each other, and swear it connects to this spoiler article.

From Kacey (hope you don’t mind)
Had Booth really understood Bones the way he thought he did, he would have known that it was only a matter of time before she would learn to connect, have relationships and finally to love someone (him). Wasn’t that part of the reason for Max being back in her life? Maybe Booth’s feelings for Bones have been affecting his ability to rationalize? To see her objectively? Hasn’t Bone’s been telling him that feelings interfere with rational thought for a long time? Are they going to meet somewhere in the middle?
The characters are learning, growing and maturing in areas where they were weak. It is representative of real life and I for one, LOVE IT!

I added your positive comment because I didn’t want to misrepresent. I love this interpretation of Booth.
But, the show and this spoiler are absolutely denying that Booth is anything but the “wronged” one. The silence in this spoiler is louder than the tibits, and it tells me they are denying Booth needs to change. Bones will keep changing while Booth waits, but this is a one way street and there will be no meeting in the middle.

This interview isn’t that bad- at least there’s no outright BS.

Re: BB’s one-sided changes, I read the latest slides and they are sticking to the Rational Scientific life = dead inside and Heart = meaning of all life. Booth will do all the teaching, Bones will learn. Hope springs eternal, especially because I fell for Bones in her earlier incarnation and because B & B have crazy chemistry. But I will still rant at the current imbalance.

Also, I love the automatic spell check function here because I can’t spell “imbalance.”

I’m guessing Avalon will have input on Angela’s baby. Yawn. I didn’t know she was a popular guest star. I think even the minor characters have been in decline. We gone from Dr. Goodman to Avalon weighing in on things. It’s not just nostalgia, but in keeping with the discussion here, Dr. Goodman did a good job recognizing Booth’s real world value while still being snarky and protective of the Jeffersonian as the citadel of pure logic. This season, we had one great scene with Cam and the slave ships, but the Jeffersonian team’s now no different from any other forensic lab, and not just Bones, but the squints are treated like lab technicians.

I’m a long time on/off fan who only who recently became obsessed online, and I was amazed that there’s been a single leader at the Bones throughout. I was so sure that the changes in Brennan and the shift into a more conventional FBI crime show was due to a change in leadership between seasons.

to me hart hanson should be trying to put a better face on hannah and booth/the fig tree lined and the laugh about it/also after the bed scene in show2 its says booth and hannnah had to know each other longer then afghanstan/why would booth plot against brennan?

  7. Drippan on February 3rd, 2011 11:43 am

Oh gosh…maybe Avalon sees that Hodgins has a brother?! It’s the only way to pull that plot line out since Hodgins himself said he had no close relatives but a distant cousin.

As for the the rest, who cares? Squinterns are the easiest to replace because they can have them actually graduate and move on to other positions/locations. Even the Daisy/Sweets relationship can finally fall apart and she leaves. That’s no big deal to me. Or they can have the sniper put a bullet in Sweets, which would not be a lose to the overall quality of the series.

HH has taken the quality this series use to have and dragged it into a all time low.

  8. carl on February 3rd, 2011 12:02 pm

to me the saving grace to hannah is booth just to tell the plain truth/yes I KNEW SHE WAS COMING INTO THE DINER HIS EYES LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW/a bigger mistakes is shacking up/and there is no way brennan would be jealous of that/and dont forget all the timed she interview the president and I am sure angelea and bones gets a big laugh out of that/and dont forget lets dish about Seeley/

  9. Panache on February 3rd, 2011 12:16 pm

What’s the point of these minor spoilers that are going to change at a moment’s notice (Hannah’s police chase, Brennan-Angela scene, and more), if no one talks about the main things? on this being a distraction.

No, things are not coming together. (Marissa, do you actually believe this?) I’ll grant you on the exciting new arc, but no way are things “coming together.” There was no payoff for Hannah, they turned Bones into a doormat, and did a disservice to Booth by turning him into a high schooler’s vision of romantic hero. HH/the show is never going to admit Booth is anything but 100% the hero in love and war. That’s not things “coming together.”

Why push the romance if you want to maintain the UST and keep flaming the Moonlighting Curse? Because the mysteries are suffering. If I can easily switch midway to P&R and sorta catch up on the rest later, it’s not a good show.

  10. Steph on February 3rd, 2011 12:41 pm

Perhaps Avalon comes back to give information about the sniper? I’m pretty bummed that HH ruled out B&B. I wish it was for them :(…maybe we’ll get some good moments regardless..? I can only hope.

  11. EL on February 3rd, 2011 12:43 pm

All of these so called teases just make me tired. They keep trying to promote the secondary characters’ romances, Hodgela, Swaisey, Cam and Paul (Caul? Pam?) and I could care less about any of them. Moonlighting’s curse was not that David and Maddie had a one night stand in one episode, it was all the ridiculous things the writers put in the show to keep them apart. SO’s, superfluous husbands, unacknowledged paternity. That is what killed the show, just like this guy is doing for Bones.

  12. - - on February 3rd, 2011 1:38 pm

Ratings are strong with the cushy spot, renewal is guaranteed. Quality is low on the priority list. I don’t know why HH even bothers with these interviews. It’d be better PR if he didn’t.

  13. JK on February 3rd, 2011 3:12 pm

NCIS is still posting phenomenal ratings. It doesn’t have Glee’s hype, but it never resorted to spoilers full lies and misdirections like Bones does. Gormagon, “real” sex, coma amnesia, love triangle, we don’t believe in the Moonlighting Curse (yeah, 6 years is natural)… Bones positively invites the backlash.

The sniper arc is promising, but it’s just making Booth into Super Man, which makes many viewers melt into a puddle and others roll their eyes. I think they’re over-relying on DB’s fanbase (seems lazy) when the show actually gained its upward surge with a strong cases and strong dynamic. Whatever Thursday’s ratings, I think it says more about Idol audience’s mentality than Bones.

  14. Holly on February 3rd, 2011 9:50 pm

It’s good know HH likes Cam/Paul because they’re the only couple I’m interested in watching progress this season.

  15. Kyean on February 3rd, 2011 10:09 pm

The reason moonlighting went down the toilet after they got the stars together is because Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis hated each other. So if you have two stars who hate each other, how can they play a believable couple.

HEY BONES SHOWRUNNERS AND WRITERS!!! YOUR SHOW ISNT GOING TO DIE IF YOU GET B&B TOGETHER, YOU MAY EVEN GET SOME MORE FANS OR GET ONES BACK WHO STOPPED WATCHIN AFTER YOU INTRODUCED THAT CRAP PIECE OF A CHARCTER HANNAH!!!

sorry for the rant, but i just needed to get that off my chest.

  16. carole on February 3rd, 2011 10:23 pm

THEY do have BONES ACTING liked a doormat and hannah will never be liked for that reasons/booth may be fool enough to buy hannah a ring/but he will lose a lot of fans for this show.

  17. Doris on February 5th, 2011 12:57 am

There is no way Booth will propose to Hannah. The show is called “Bones”, pure and simple.

As for the Moonlighting curse, there isn’t one—it was just a matter of handling the David and Maddie coupling terribly, with absolutely no imagination or creativity. Moonlighting also suffered from two stars who hated each other, a lead actress whose ego made her impossible to work with, causing the brilliant creator (Glen Caron) to leave due to all the turmoil on the set. Once Caron left, it was all downhill. But none of those factors apply to Bones. HH doesn’t want to go there with BB, because he doesn’t have the guts to, plain and simple. Like someone here wrote; a six year love affair with no consummation? Completely unrealistic. And then bringing in a third party as a stall tactic? Cliche and cowardly. I still love the show, but am counting the days until Hannah is gone, which I think will be very soon.

Enough with hallucination, ghost, mind-meld, psychic, signals from the Universe. Or at least give us an alternate rational explanation and don’t tell us which one is the right one, like it used to be on the show.

  19. Delph on February 7th, 2011 11:36 am

As much as Brennan needs in her “personal” life to follow a bit more her emotions, feelings, hear ; Booth needs in his “personal” life to follow a bit more his reason, his brain. He helps her with emotions, she should help him with reason. But it’s all about heart trumps brain, Booth’s POV trumps Brennan’s POV, Booth in the end is right, Brennan wrong.
Booth needs Brennan’s personal weaknesses not strengths so that he can feel needed and doesn’t need her (a guy thing *sigh*).
Brennan needs Booth’s personal strengths not weaknesses cause she is weak/needy *sigh*
It’s all about Brennan doesn’t have anything to teach Booth about life, anything to offer except her need for him. And Booth has everything to teach/offer to her, and a strong shoulder for her to cry on…
Very original concept, a strong man and a weak/needy woman…

  20. Delph on February 7th, 2011 11:58 am

Brennan is more and more a faux action girl, and victim of Chickification.
