DROP DEAD DIVA Season 3 Premiere Discussion

June 20, 2011 by

Hello, DROP DEAD DIVA fans! It’s good to be back talking about our girl Jane and her life!

Season two ended when Grayson asked Jane to be his “best man,” and after she refused, he chased after her and was hit by a car. Season three begins with Jane at the hospital. But in true DDD form, Jane is having a dream. No, she didn’t dream Grayson’s accident — she dreamt that he came back to earth in the bodies of other men. That was pretty clever. But THEN she dreamt a musical number in which male hospital patients had their shirts ripped from them, nurses danced with IV poles, and Grayson pulled her into his arms for a kiss.

Um, what?

I have ALWAYS liked that this show is a little bit quirky and that musical numbers are intertwined with the plots, but did anyone else think that it sort of cheapened Grayson’s accident? Even more so when Fred calls Stacy and glibly says “I don’t know what I would do if you were hit by a car.” What was that? It just felt so joke-y. Thoughts?

The entire episode sort of played out that way, so it was clearly deliberate, and I’m not sure what to think about that. The success of the show has always depended on Jane’s character being likable, and her growth in terms of her “inner Deb” giving her self confidence. But in this episode, she was bratty, spoiled, and kind of mean.

And then she had another dream of being in bed with Paula Abdul and Fred.

Jane called them recurring dreams, and the fact that we’ve seen these devices used before (including in this episode!) felt like overkill, but I’m wondering if that was also deliberate. Were Jane’s negative qualities a result of her inner-Deb trying to get out to claim Grayson as her own, or should we expect this kind of behavior from Jane this season? The only way to find out is to watch more episodes, of course, but I’m also hoping the show ups the serious factor on the case-level.

We had two cases in this episode:

  • Jane represents of a gorgeous, rich actor named Tim Cline. He was accused of a hit-and-run resulting in the death of a young girl.
  • Kim (freshly self-employed as a lawyer based out of a local coffee shop) represents one of her friends who is suing her husband for false advertisement and a booty call.

Jane wins her case using smarts and Stacy as a Parker-appointed “intern.” Their work was solid, but it was still a case where the sympathies landed on the spoiled (the rich actor) and not on the true victim (the girl who had died). Kim goes up against Parker, and while he tries to woo her back, she grows cold and rejects him. Wendy Williams guest starred as the judge of their case, and her verdict, insisting Parker’s client put up a billboard warning women against dating him, was ridiculously frivolous.

It’s that sort of verdict, combined with all of the dream sequences and vapid moments from Jane, that turned me off to this episode. I’ve really enjoyed DDD in the past, so I’m absolutely willing to keep giving it a try. How about you? Am I just taking it too seriously? What are your thoughts on Grayson’s quick recovery and engagement plans to Vanessa? Will Jane be able to accept the role of best man? What did you think of this episode?

Let’s discuss!

i love drop dead diva, it is a fantastic show and i absolutely love Jane. I hope that Jane and Grayson found their way to each other, cause they belong together, i don’t like Vanessa and i don’t think that Grayson should marry her.

I completely agree with you. I didn’t care much for this episode, the weird dream/music sequences were too much for me. I loved Stacy in this episode. I really like Stacy and I like how she is so sweet. I hope the next episode picks up and is not as silly as the last one.

i have to add that the case that Kim presented was BEYOND ridiculous. I get that Kim is trying to prove a point, but this case was ridiculous. I’m surprised that they won. It was stupid, please entertain us with better stories.
