BONES: Hart Hanson Talks Season 6, The Original Fallout for ‘The Hole in the Heart,’ Comic-Con, THE FINDER and More

August 6, 2011 by

Given all the fuss around BONES at Friday’s Fox TCA session, Give Me My Remote thought it might be a good idea to get some of our lingering burning questions answered by series creator Hart Hanson.

Whether it was the canceled Comic-Con appearance, the original plan for how season 6 was going to end, if he had any regrets for how the season played out and more, Hanson was game enough to answer our questions.

Take a look!

Hanson weighs in on missing Comic-Con this year

And then he shared his thoughts on season 6, what they had initially been building towards, his new series, THE FINDER, and more…

Don’t worry, we still have more for you guys from Hanson, as well as BONES writer Carla Kettner.

But for now, what do you think about the initial plan for season 6? Are you glad the season ended the way it did?

Thanks Marissa for that very nice interview with HH!

It seems like HH wants the same things fans want and that is too forget S6 existed and just wants to go on holiday to flush all that took place away. I’m glad he admitted that it was a very long season for him and the writers.

I’m glad that he’s excited about the Finder series but I’m afraid that HH has lost to much of my faith that he can produce a creative series and keep it that way. I’m really hoping that Bones gets back on track for S7 but, if not, there are other better things to do.

  2. EL on August 6th, 2011 6:23 pm

Who do you think he thinks found season 6 ‘the most beloved’ season of Bones? I’m speechless.

  3. Piper on August 6th, 2011 6:38 pm

Why isn’t it November yet?! I NEED season 7!! 🙂 I’m so happy they went the baby route. It makes this hiatus so much harder, but in a good way b/c I’m so excited to see Brennan & Booth try to navigate having a child together.

  4. Forensicmama on August 6th, 2011 7:29 pm

I absolutely agree with Hart. It’s was their best season. Heart wrenching and cringe-worthy in the beginning and beautiful, wonderful, sweet, lovely in the end. 🙂

  5. E on August 6th, 2011 9:22 pm

Sorry, worst season for me. Not even sure if I will come back in November. Will probably just watch it end on TNT.

  6. Jen on August 6th, 2011 10:15 pm

I was stunned to hear him say that S6 was the best because it was contenscious and the ratings were high. The ratings went up in the 2nd half. I hated what Hannah did. It fractured most of the relationshps on the show, there was no humor, there was no chemistry, and Hannah was boring. How could that be the best season? It was the worst. I think the only thing he said that was worth listening to was when he said it was a long season. Now we get a short season after a season that was awful. I really hope Bones gets an 8th season to redeem itself before the series ends.

When Marissa said her favorite episode was the lowest rated, his answer was… Did you see the show before it? Was he admitting Hannah bonding with Parker was a mistake? I thought it was which is why I skipped it and the next one. Don’t plan on ever watching them, either. No S6 DVD for me.

Worst season for me. Hands down. No contest. It’s best that I stop my review there, because I am trying to step away gracefully. 😀

  8. L on August 7th, 2011 8:48 am

Marisa you do very well with HH interviews. Thanks!!

Agree with those that say s6 was the worst season. First half was just awful. I’ll never feel the same about the character of Booth. He’s not who I thought he was and if HH doesn’t see the problem…..I’m guessing he’ll never fix it.

Hart seems to think the ratings are all that matters. They got lucky with the AI lead in……that had to have helped them a lot.

s7 is going to be so disjointed episode-wise, I wonder if Bones will survive that. I wish them well, but it’s not on my must see TV list anymore…….maybe I’ll DVR it over the course of next year.

  9. Jillian on August 7th, 2011 9:55 am

Eh. All Hart really cares about is ratings.

I’m still really looking forward to season 7. I don’t think the episodes in season 7 will be disjointed at all. They sound amazing.

  10. Jillian on August 7th, 2011 10:13 am

Personally, I do think that Hart realizes that he made a mistake. Before Christmas, every spoiler was all about Hannah. They were promoting like she was going to be a regular character. Hart said in an interview that he was going to to do a storyline about Hannah and corrupt cops…and they didn’t go through with it. They were definitely planning on Hannah staying around a lot longer that she did. Then right before Christmas, I read an interview with Marisa and SN…and he said that after Hannah leaves, B/B will go back to being the center of the show. I was just like “Whoa?! Who just took a happy shipper pill?!” and the Hannah parade just stopped. She just left…and now, B/B are together. Something happened. I don’t if it was Hart…or maybe Fox-but something happen. Even if this is true, I don’t think Hart will ever admit this. No show runner would admit that.

Looking back at season 6, I don’t think there is anything wrong with Booth. I just think he’s confused about love. That he would rather just have someone to spend 30, 40, 50 years with, than actually spend the rest of his life with one specific person. I just want to see the old Booth come back. I want to see them open and honest to each other. Just about their feelings, issues with their relationship and how to raise their baby together. Not just put it off…and just say something like “things are just better left unsaid.” There is some potential in the sides in episode 2. They openly talk about sex…and Booth doesn’t squirm. I want to see some affection. I just want to know that they aren’t together just because of the baby…and they are also enjoying being together too. Like MI…I want to see Booth especially prove that he’s committed to Brennan and the baby because he wants to…not because he has too. All that and I could forget all about season six.

  11. Chris on August 7th, 2011 10:39 am

I agree with Jillian. Hanson knows exactly what was the problem with season 6 and that the ratings were going dangerously low until Xmas and were saved by AI, not by the beauty of the episodes.
Even non shipper critics were very negative about season 6. Hannah storyline aside, I think season 6 was played porly by the actors (they looked bored for half season) and some scripts were low quality compared to previous seasons.
So in all honesty, season 6 was pretty bad.
I wonder if the producers realize that in case ratings are going down for season 7 it’s because of the damage done by season 6 (for me the show will never be the same, and it’s not a must watch anymore) and not because of the storyline of this coming season.
I also wonder if they really believe that having Booth falling out of love with Brennan, then loving Hannah, then consoling himself with Brennan after Hannah’s rejection (Hanson confirmed here that it was his plan) is creatively noticeable. I think it’s just lame, lame, lame. How to ruin one of them most special and beautiful love stories, B&B deserved better than procreating because they were consoling each other.. It looks like Hanson is portraying his show even worse than what it really is..
I personally believe the creativity of the show has dried up, good that they are left with the closure of all the investment of past seasons were so much has been built on this couple that they can live 1-2 seasons with its payback. After that they really have nothing else to tell, and it shows already.
As for Hanson defensive mode, he can say whatever he wants about season 6. We know he’s capable of writing much much better things, just give a look at Bones’ past seasons. That was a quality product.

  12. Kim on August 7th, 2011 12:12 pm

Season six killed my enjoyment for this show and the characters. I no longer care about what happens on the show, or with Booth and Brennan. What was so great about this show was that it was unique and at one point the writing was amazing. Season six though was so disjointed and hard to follow that I’ve just given up on this show. The writing wasn’t telling me what was going on. I had to guess what the actors were doing and thinking half the time. I never really understood what the writers were trying to convey. That is a failure on their part to tell a story and is what has lost me as a fan, of this once great show.

Booth, as a character, was suppose to love Brennan. I never saw any evidence of this, in the entirety of season six. Season six showed me that this wasn’t true any longer. Brennan was his work associate and nothing more. The story of Bones that was previously presented to the audience, seemed false and no longer had any meaning. There was no conflict with Booth’s feelings towards Brennan, during the telling of season six, because there was nothing there. He no longer loved Brennan. He chose Hannah over Brennan. He told Hannah to go easy on Brennan because she was not normal like they were. Booth became one those guys! He came across as a jerk. I no longer could see him as the same character.

Brennan comes to Booth for comfort, after Vincent’s death. Brennan is emotionally fragile, so Booth knocks her up. This is what the audience was suppose to wait six years to watch? My take on this part of the story is that I think Booth took advantage of Brennan in that situation. She was emotionally fragile and he allowed it to happen. There was no love in it. It was two people having grief sex, nothing more. Booth and Brennan’s relationship is no longer worth my viewing time. What I was hoping to be a beautifully well told love story, isn’t going to happen. Instead, I had to endure what was season six. It failed me as a viewer, from beginning to end.

If the writing and acting fails to tell the audience what it is suppose to see, the story has failed to be told. The producer’s giving interviews, after an episode airs, to clarify that the audience’s interpretations are wrong, is a failure on their part to tell a cohesive story. Bones is no longer worth my viewing time. I have no desire to watch them further destroy, this once great story.

  13. ToZiKa on August 7th, 2011 4:23 pm

@EL: s6 is among my fav seasons this year. I might not have loved everything about it but it was a good season.

  14. ToZiKa on August 7th, 2011 4:25 pm

oh and if Hart didn’t care about the ratings he could just as well stop working all together. that’s his JOB! he has to care about the writing, the actors that get hired, the amount of money they spend and all that stuff and that includes to make sure that the ratings are high enough so that the whole crew will still have a job in the next year!

  15. C Dubbs on August 8th, 2011 1:51 pm

Hart Hanson is a dick. He probably wouldn’t even admit that the ratings were good because of the American Idol lead-in. HATE HIM.

ERA. YA NO.

  17. Chris Greklek on August 9th, 2011 5:29 pm

The only reason I didn’t like season 6 as much as others is because towards the end, I felt like Sweets was in it way to much. Other then that, I loved it as much as the others. Bones is the one show that never lets me down after seeing an episode. I’m a little disappointed that season 7 will only have 13 episodes, but I understand why. I’m also pretty excited for The Finder. It seems interesting enough to give it a chance.

  18. D Hardy on August 9th, 2011 5:41 pm

I really like the way they are moving the show . I am reading others on how Booth falling out of love with Bones then semi back in makes him awful. I dis agree because I have seen this same thing in Life itself. As the show went on anyone could see his eyes when he looked at her that he was never “out of Love” but merely forced to go on. And when she tried to come back,he had to say no because he had commited himself to a relationship that Hannah herself said “she wasn’t the marrying kind”. I find that they are following a path that is so much reality in Alcoholic families for Booth.Self – Sabotage. Good and Real Show I commend the writers and the cast for their honest work and will continue to watch with ferver

i loved season 6 and the rest of them, i loved how it ended and cannot wait for the next season.

  20. Emily K. on August 9th, 2011 5:55 pm

I think the whole Booth and Brennan getting together was exactly what had to happen for their characters to actually spend a night together. Brennan has been the one consistantly who has not wanted to step across that line, she even went so far as to want a child with Booth, but to have artificial insemination; even though Angela said that is not the way it should be. It took a tragedy to break Brennan’s barriors down and be open to being with Booth in that manor. Brennan always things so logically and she needed something to shake her up so she could not think and just act. Based on all the past seasons, this is what it takes to get Brennan to open up physically to Booth. It has always been this way, when she gets kidnapped she allows him to hug her or hold her, but when things are fine there is very little physical contact.

Overall season 6 was good even though there were some parts I did not like. I thought the characters were good, and the story line was okay, but what really bothered me was Brennan in the beginning. She seemed to regress back to the old Brennan; very analytical and logical. She really broke some barriors in her logical thinking in Season 5, but when season 6 started she was back to season 1 (“I don’t know what that means.”) Bones. I thought the turning point for her was the episode where they investigate the doctor’s death and Brennan sees herself as the doctor. I thought that was one of the best episodes. I’m very excited to see where Season 7 goes.

  21. Phillip on August 9th, 2011 6:17 pm

Y’all guys do realize that this was the best season for them so far right? I mean look, y’all guys are ranting, raving, and want more. Why? Because of the way this season was played out. Everyone who is a fan of this show has an opinion of this particular season. Hence why its their best yet, because of the response to this season. I mean cmon, I know I wasn’t the only one tuning in every week to see how everything was gonna play out, got jumpy for every Hannah/Booth spoiler, cheered for any Booth/Brennan news.

So see, that’s why, in my own opinion, this season was the best. It left you wanting more and I will tune in for this season. And for those people who say “oh I’m through with this show,” sure go ahead, it happens every season, yet the show keeps on trucking.

  22. annie on August 9th, 2011 6:39 pm

I don’t know, I feel kinda ripped! We didn’t get to see anything between Booth and Brennan other than them cuddling… not even a kiss! And next thing we know, “oh hey, I’m prego…” – Everyone has been wanting to see them together… we didn’t see that… maybe they’ll reminisce or allow Booth and Brennan to be more affectionate in S7…

  23. Brooke on August 9th, 2011 7:18 pm

Great interview, Marissa!! I have to say that I wasn’t very happy with Season 6 on the whole. I didn’t like Hannah, and I felt the whole last few episodes were very rushed and quite random. Not to mention, we as the audience were handed “surprises” that came out of nowhere without much explanation or follow through. Having said that, this interview helped me accept Season 6. I don’t feel as salty about it as I used to–it’s still not “beloved”, but I understand it better. I’m not very excited about Brennan’s pregnancy, but it’s happening, so be it. I really do hope Season 7 can come back and resurrect the Bones we all love! A Season 8 would be fabulous, but I’m not holding my breath… I suppose we will all have to wait and see how Season 7 performs.

  24. Indira on August 9th, 2011 7:19 pm

Honestly, I hated Season 6. I’ve watched the show from the premier episode (and read Kathy’s books to boot) but the magic has been dying since Season 5 for me. Yes, I have always wanted Booth and Brennan to get together, that’s just something I’d like to see happen and I’m unapologetic for it. But the fact is that the show used to be 90% solving cases and 10% relationships. It’s flipped the other way now, and that just turns me off. If I wanted to watch a soap opera, I’d watch daytime TV. That’s pretty much what Bones has become to me, a soap opera. There’s a very good chance that if I don’t see anything worth watching after the first episode or two of Season 7, then I’m done with Bones for good.

  25. mcf on August 9th, 2011 9:44 pm

Please in latinamerica we just want to see Bones in English not in Spanish, it lost to much in translation. “Fox” have to do something about it or the audience will go down.

  26. DeeplyDisgruntled on August 9th, 2011 10:21 pm

It seems to me that the problem most people had with S6 was that Booth and Hannah were portrayed with character flaws. That doesn’t make a show horrible. It doesn’t mean that HH made a mistake. It adds texture and reality to the show. I can accept that people were disappointed that the show and the characters didn’t go where they wanted them to, but learn to accept that your personal opinion doesn’t have to be the only or the ‘right’ one.

S6 was my favourite so far, and I’m definitely looking forward to S7. Those of you saying you don’t get how he thinks it was most loved and most hated should take a second look at the comments.

  27. Eve on August 10th, 2011 11:41 am

Everyone has their own interpretation. I personally really disliked the season and it stopped me from watching live. I taped and sometimes watched later, and some episodes, I watched clips and decided they were not worth watching. I no longer see the chemistry between them that was once so evident in every episode. I really did not care if they got together, but the way it was done, was so disappointing to me. I guess I have always watched the show for the Brennan character, and to me, for them to get together grieving, is just not what 5+ years of watching was satisfying to me. There was nothing that I saw in episodes leading up to it that showed that Booth had any feelings other than friendship, left for Brennan. He wanted anyone and Brennan was there for him. I just don’t see his love for her so to me, Brennan deserves more than that.

Many others see that chemistry between them, but I just don’t. I continue to check in on the show to see how it ends, but I find other shows so much more enjoyable. Real life is tough enough and you want to see some aspects played out. I just find the way their story, which could have been a great love story, has just been too depressing. It really has been a soap opera, but with not seeing a real triangle from Season 6. Booth never displayed any real feelings for Brennan and he was in love with Hannah. I don’t blame him but I don’t want to see the character that I watch the show for, being reduced to second choice, after Booth got over being “mad.”

Like I said, everyone views things differently. From years of watching other shows, Gilmore Girls, etc., triangles were played out, but they were much better done, IMO. Bones went from being a MUST SEE to a show that can wait for TNT reruns. I also get by with just reading recaps.

  28. Emma on August 10th, 2011 6:04 pm

Absulutley LOVE IT!, i cant wait for season 7!!!! i want to see how the rest handle this situation, and how thing are going to turn out for brenan and booth, i just hope that we have more than just, mouving in together, im also waiting for an season 8, i hope that we get to see that 😉
    <3 Bones! 😀

  29. Jess on August 11th, 2011 12:34 pm

I started watching Bones towards the end of last year, and I totally fell in love 🙂 I went back and watched seasons 1-5, and then I watched this season. I thought that this season turned out really well. I’m not a big fan of the whole Hannah thing, but Brennan did leave the Jeffersonian, and Booth, so you can’t really be mad at him for choosing Hannah. I think that the Hannah thing was necessary for Booth. It helped him to see how much he really did love Bones.

And I do understand people who would’ve liked to actually see B&B get together and all, and I would’ve liked to see even a kiss or something, but we have to take Emily into consideration. She was already pregnant in real life, and it would’ve been odd or uncomfortable for her to do a scene like that while she was pregnant.

I think we might get to see a flashback of that night (the night when they got together) when Bones goes into labor with hers and Booth’s baby (seeing as Emily will not be pregnant in real life any more). It makes sense, and it would make the event seem more special. But that’s just my opinion.

I am still a diehard Bones fan, and I can’t wait for Season 7 🙂
