SUPERNATURAL: Sera Gamble and Robert Singer Tease Season 7

September 23, 2011 by

When SUPERNATURAL ended their sixth season, fan-favorite Castiel took a seemingly darker turn and promoted himself to God. (Angel or not, that’s still a pretty freakin’ huge promotion.) As you may have seen in the promos for the new year, Castiel has let the power go a bit to his head and during tonight’s premiere, he sets out to right some very specific wrongs committed by a few not-so-good people.

But given the variety of things Castiel objects to (and how sensitive the topics could be), how did the writers land on what should catch the new God’s ire?

“We wanted to get a cross section of stuff that he wanted to do,” executive producer Sera Gamble told reporters earlier this week. “He had things he needed to do in Heaven, things he needed to do on Earth. The ideas is that there’s a progression for him in the episode. There are things he’s doing that come from I think a really pure, old place for him, things that he wished for a long time. [Things] that he wished that his dad would get his ass back here and do. And then there’s stuff that has been irking him. Cas realizes in this episode that he has more to prove than he thought.”

Unfortunately, the people he most needs to prove himself to happen to be a certain pair of hunting brothers who are not so thrilled with the new and not-so-improved version of their former friend.

“If you kind of look at it from his perspective, he had friends that he stuck up for and he gave up everything for over and over again for a long time,” Gamble explained. “They didn’t stand by him. So some of his actions in this episode are kind of about proving them wrong. He digs himself in a bit deeper because of that.”

However, that’s not to say that things are any better for Sam and Dean.

“One thing that I think is a throughline that we keep seeing is that Sam and Dean now feel like they are kind of part of a small and outmoded way of fighting evil,” Gamble noted. “They feel outmatched in a way they didn’t before. They feel that the world around that has really changed.”

“The core from the beginnings have always been morality tales,” executive producer Robert Singer added. “Like classic westerns are generally morality tales. We’re always telling a morality tale. What makes it interesting is that our characters aren’t perfect, they’re very flawed and susceptible to temptations of their own, but at the end of the day, right and wrong is what really drives the show.”

Tonight’s premiere? It’s good. Really good. So you should tune in at 9 PM on The CW to see what goes down.

After you watch it, make sure to come back to Give Me My Remote at 10 PM PT to get some more SUPERNATURAL goodies about what went down and what’s to come!
