GLEE: Chris Colfer on His Dream Musical Number, His Choice for a Kurt & Blaine Duet and More…

September 27, 2011 by

As you may have guessed from the GLEE “I Am Unicorn” teasers Kath posted last week, Chris Colfer’s Kurt has a pretty big episode tonight.

To celebrate the occasion, we scored a few minutes with Colfer who gamely revealed what song he wants to sing before Kurt graduates, what number he thinks his character should sing to Blaine and more…

Before graduating, are there any songs you really want to sing?
Chris Colfer: Oh, God. Well, I do have a list of songs I really want to do…I’m afraid to say them out loud because I don’t want anyone to laugh at me [to] my face. “S&M” is one of them, by Rihanna. So I really hope I get to do “S&M” by Rihanna. I will go on record saying that. I would love to get my chains and my whips out and have a good time.

No judging from me! And we also need to get Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews on as your family!
CC: I know, right? Even if we don’t see them, we know. We know they’re my family.

We do. So what’s going on with Kurt and Blaine? Anything new for those crazy kids?
CC:
Well they’re still together. I mean, they don’t really have another option or anyone to cheat on with, so… Viewers are like, “So what’s going on with Kurt and Blaine?” And I’m like, “Well, what could be going on?” [Laughs] I mean, like, “Hey, you’re gay, I’m gay, let’s be together!”

Well, in terms of romance and songs, is there any number you would want Kurt to sing to Blaine?
CC: Yes! I would love to sing “Come What May” from MOULIN ROUGE. I would be Nicole Kidman, of course.

Oh my gosh, I just got chills.
CC: Wouldn’t that be great?

Amazing!
CC: I would love that so much.

Where is [GLEE co-creator] Ryan Murphy? This needs to happen.
CC: Right? I know, let’s find him.

Shelby starts up a second glee club in tonight’s episode. Will Kurt be swayed to the dark side?
CC: No, he’s not. He’s in the original.

Anything else you can tease about the season?
CC:
Um, I don’t really know too much. But we’re having a great time so far.

Any songs you have done so far that you can talk about?
CC:
Yes, I don’t know if I can give it away. But I will. I do “I’m The Greatest Star” from FUNNY GIRL in the second episode and I had so much fun. So much fun doing it.

I cannot wait to see it!
CC: Thank you!

“S&M” and “Come What May”? This why we adore Colfer.

What do you think? Do you have a song you want Kurt to sing?

Chris Colfer is amazing and pure talent. Each one of his ideas are wonderful and I really want to see him sing the songs he loves to sing performed by him on Glee.

  2. Jenny on September 27th, 2011 1:35 pm

Come What May is the song i have ALWAYS wanted for Klaine. Chris usually gets what he wants so this is super exciting to me!

  3. HD on September 27th, 2011 1:40 pm

And I also want Chris/Kurt to sing “Memory” of Barbra Streisand before the end of the season. I feel like Chris would be fabulous singing it, as he is singing “I’m the Greatest Star”: he is wonderfully Amazing.

  4. Ria on September 27th, 2011 1:50 pm

    L. M. F. A. O. Chris, I am so sorry you got saddled with that poor excuse of a storyline that is Klaine- I can feel your frustration from here, considering you keep mentioning it in every interview as of late. DON’T WORRY THOUGH. YOU’RE HEADED FOR MUCH BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS THAT BLAINE, KLAINE, AND GLEE, AND YOUR FANS WILL BE BEHIND YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!

  5. Masie on September 27th, 2011 1:53 pm

Chris Colfer can do anything. He is so amazingly talented as an actor and his vocal range is immense. He’s also sooo sexy and hot. I hope that Kurt gets cast as Tony in West Side Story. Chris Colfer would be amazing in that role.

  6. ginger on September 27th, 2011 1:58 pm

I love Chris and his dry humor, but does he really always have to reduce Kurt and Blaine’s relationship to them both being gay? They mean a lot to people and there’s more to the Klaine dynamic than that in my opinion, so it just comes off as a little too flippant when he says this. But yes, please let them sing, “Come What May”.

WARNING GLEE SPOILER WITHIN COMMENT (- Kath)
I cannot believe that they’ve now made the character of Blaine younger than kurt. How dare Ryan Murphy and the glee writers risk making the character of Kurt seem weak and needy. In season 2 the script was written with blaine being older than kurt and that is how Chris acted his reactions to Blaine. Chris was playing Kurt as younger. It is ridiculous to change a character’s age like this. It negates all that has gone before. All I can wish now is that Chris gets out of Glee as soon as he can, because all the writers are interested in now is satisfying the overloud screams of the starkid fangirls (Starkids being the base of fans that Darren brought with him onto the show after he did A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel) and they’re doing it by reducing the roles of other much more rounded and believable characters in Glee and making many of them look ridiculous, in order to promote Darren criss. Darren may be able to sing, but he most certainly cannot act above average and the character of Blaine is morphing into Darren criss. If the writers feel that he’ll be able to carry the whole show, then they might as well cancel glee now. The starkid fan base is no where near as large as the Gleeks fanbase, but they scream so loudly that the glee writers are deafened and cannot hear the frustration of the true gleeks. Chris Colfer will yet again be relied on to make the character changes believable.

LOVING this interview. Also loving knowing what Marisa left of the cutting room floor. HA HA!

“Come What May” is one of my favorite love songs. But Colfer singing “S&M” as Kurt…well there is NO beating that.

  9. Janine on September 27th, 2011 2:19 pm

I adore Chris colfer. He is such a wonderful actor and human being. He has so much talent that i really believe that he could do anything. I know that he’s singing The Greatest Star as an audition song for Tony in West Side Story and i really hope Kurt gets the part. It’ll really show that just because someone’s gay does not mean that they cannot play a straight character. So many straight actors are cast as Gay characters, but hardly any Gay actors are cast as Straight characters. it is an unfair bias that needs to be addressed.

  10. ginger on September 27th, 2011 2:21 pm

    WARNING GLEE SPOILER

I don’t like them changing Blaine’s grade and character either. I think Darren’s popularity made the writers lose sight of why Blaine and Dalton were so charming and a breath of fresh air to the show. I’m okay with the transfer (although it’s a bit selfish of Kurt to pressure his boyfriend) and Blaine can come out of his shell a little, but he should still have some dapper composure! I also hate the thought of Kurt and Blaine being separated after graduation and not getting the closure of a happy ending. Maybe I’m a hopeless romantic I want the show to end with them going off into the sunset (come what may) with the promise of marriage and babies in the future. 🙂

  11. Robert on September 27th, 2011 2:26 pm

@Ginger, Chris has nothing to do with what is written in the script. If you feel that Kurt and Blaine are being portrayed as too Gay, though how they can be too gay when the characters are gay I don’t really understand, but if you feel that, please blame the writers and not Chris Colfer.

  12. Kath Skerry on September 27th, 2011 2:31 pm

@Janine – I’d just add in that there are MANY, MANY gay actors playing straight characters. Many you might now even know are gay. I can think of some lead actors on shows right now that are gay and out, but most viewers would have NO idea.

Some like NPH are very public about who they are while MANY other actors aren’t as public. For some actors, the less the public knows about their personal life, the more they can easily slip in and out of roles and become the character. The personal lives of actors can take away from the performance, no matter gay, straight or otherwise. Just a personal opinion, but I haven’t been able to take Tom Cruise as seriously after his whole couch jumping debacle back in the day.

Not disagreeing with your sentiment at all…just adding my own commentary 🙂

  13. Katie on September 27th, 2011 2:33 pm

I love Chris Colfer and Kurt. Chris is brilliant at playing Kurt and i really hope that Kurt and rachel go to new york and that we get a spin-off series with Chris Colfer, Lea michele and cory monteith, oh and Naya too. i hope that Kurt and blaine break up soon. I really don’t like the character of blaine at all. I want Kurt back as his independent, strong, sexy, brave, compassionate self.
And I hope Chris gets to do S & M.

  14. Jesse on September 27th, 2011 2:45 pm

@Robert, I think you missed Ginger’s point. She seems to be commenting on Chris’ quote in the preceding article (“you’re gay, I’m gay, let’s be together”), not on dialogue from the show’s script. Not saying I agree/disagree, just that perhaps you misunderstood her.

  15. Janine on September 27th, 2011 2:53 pm

Kath Skerry. What I would love to see happen is that gay actors can be open about who they are without it affecting their abilities to get cast in roles. Generally, as soon as an actor reveals himselg as being gay his casting opportunities reduce greatly. I know this from friends who suffer from this frustrating bias within the industry. You are more likely to get cast in the major roles if you are straight or un-public about your sexuality. Also more gay roles are given to straight actors. It does have to be addressed. I was not saying that gay men are never cast, it is just that the odds are greatly and unfairly against them in the industry. Why cannot they be as open as they like about being gay and still be judged on their ability to play the role, in other words, it should be down to talent and not sexual orientaion. How many times do we hear the accusation that a gay guy playing a gay character is just playing himself, yet a straight guy playing a straight character is not accused of that. Or that a straight guy is so brave to take on a gay role and the result was so convincing, yet before we even see a gay guy who has been cast in a straight role we get critics saying that there’s no way a gay guy can convincingly play a straight character, especially if that role involves a romantic scene with an actress. I know there are many more cases that can be brought into the argument, but I am generalizing here, because it is such a vast topic to cover, so excuse the extremes. Chris Colfer is breaking that attitude down. He is very obviously nothing like his gay character in real life. He is showing people that being gay is just a very small part of who he is and it does not affect his abilities in any way. I really hope that he starts getting cast in straight roles very soon as I know, with his talent, he could do anything and if anyone can begin to address the bias it is Chris Colfer.

  16. ginger on September 27th, 2011 2:55 pm

@Robert I was in no way saying they were too gay! (In fact, my cynical side lives in fear of the writers making Blaine experiment with girls again so he can be more “mainstream”.) But anyway, I was just commenting on Chris’ quote where he sort of implies that all Kurt and Blaine have in common is being gay and if there were any other gay guys around they’d cheat on each other. That’s just what his quote sounds like to me, and I’m saying that I think there is more of a special connection between the characters and they aren’t just interchangeable gay guys who would be with anyone of their orientation. Sorry, hope that makes sense. Kurt and Blaine are my favorite couple, and they are an important representation to have on tv, so I hope the writers and actors treat them with respect. I think Chris does respect his character and his fans, but his interviews come off a little flippant sometimes.

  17. Sam on September 27th, 2011 3:09 pm

@Ginger I actually think that Chris’ flippancy is actually more sarcasm and Chris is making a much deeper more relevant point here. He makes comments very similar to this is many of his interviews and I think the message he’s trying to put out there is that, While he loves the Klaine relationship, and Chris does love it, there is something else that needs to be thought about. Are they together because of true love or has it a lot to do with wanting to be with someone who understands what you are going through because they are the same and they feel stronger together. That’s very badly put, but I’m trying not to stir up a massive discussion here on a comments site. Chris is not saying that Kurt and blaine don’t love each other, but he’s saying also that we need to look at things from many different angles. There are no other openly gay teens, at this point, for either Kurt or Blaine to be unfaithful with. Why? when we know that there are a lot of Gay people. He’s just making you question that.

  18. ginger on September 27th, 2011 6:30 pm

    **spoiler**

Oh great, looks like they’ve found some more”options”. A gay Warbler villain is going to be pursuing Blaine. Glee is killing me.

  19. Max on September 28th, 2011 8:33 am

In response to Ginger’s above spoiler:

I’m not too worried about the Warbler. Anyone who is described as a villain isn’t going to be a threat to Kurt and Blaine. It’ll cause some drama, but anyone who watches the show intelligently knows how much Kurt and Blaine care for each other. I personally love their relationship and watching it grow.

I don’t always love Chris’s answers about why Kurt and Blaine are together, but I chalk it up to him getting tired of being asked the same questions over and over. He’s said in other interviews that he likes them. Even with the addition of a new gay character, I don’t think either of them would ever cheat.

  20. Sara on September 28th, 2011 6:40 pm

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sing Come What May! That is one of my favourite songs ever and I can’t even imagine how awesome it would be if Kurt and Blaine sang it together (or basically any Glee characters)!

  21. Lauren on September 28th, 2011 6:46 pm

I love Chris. He is a personal hero and amazing actor. As for the show, I ship Klaine, hard and I am not happy with Blaine being a junior there is no way he is younger than Kurt!! And if they break up I will scream and throw things at the wall…….. I wish the show would show more of their relationship rather than just oh we are together but we don’t act like a couple…. The haven’t even kissed since they got together and they never hold hands or anything I don’t think the writers should dance around their relationship because it might be controversial….. Since when has that stopped them? it keeps the show interesting and enjoyable.

  22. Alexandra on September 28th, 2011 6:58 pm

Come What May is one the most beautiful songs ever. Love that song. I hope they get the chance to sing that.

  23. Jane Humen on September 28th, 2011 7:58 pm

I’d love it if Chris sang Skyscraper by Demi Lovato. That song has reminded me of him since the day it was released. Someone make this happen. I’ll love you forever.

  24. Felysion on September 28th, 2011 8:03 pm

Chris is an amazing actor and his portrayal of Kurt is always so raw and true that you believe it.

But what I don’t believe is Blaine being younger than Kurt all of a sudden. WTH? It confused me greatly at first and now it’s starting to make me irritated. Kurt still looks incredibly young, but Blaine… sometimes he looks way too much cradle robber compared to Kurt. He looks Darren’s true age, and while I can shuffle him down to high school age in my head if I try it only works if he’s contrasted against Kurt -as being older than him. Because not even my immense imagination buys Blaine being younger.
It was always part of their charm that the older was slightly shorter, throwing away stereotyphical couple dynamics and making them more accessible and less cookie-cut shaped. Please, writers, explain this throwabout to us. Did he suddenly find a magic coin and got de-aged? Is he a spy who changes his official age after what suits his secret missions?

Anyway, adding my ‘yay’ vote to ‘Come What May’, would love to see that! 🙂

  25. Aislinn on September 28th, 2011 8:24 pm

Come What May… NEEDS TO HAPPEN!!!!!

  26. girlracer on September 28th, 2011 8:38 pm

I love Chris but I really want to see HeMo and Naya do S&M remix that was done by Rihanna and Britney

  27. Sa on September 28th, 2011 8:57 pm

Judging by Chris’s “you’re gay, I’m gay” comment, I got this strong vibe that Chris isn’t a huge fan of Klaine. At the very least, there is some definite frustration towards it. Chris is pretty vocal about his opinions. He’s certainly not the best at keeping things to himself. I’m just not sure that this is really simple sarcasm due to being asked the question over and over or if there really is some underlying seriousness that’s coming through as a sarcastic jest because of his natural humor style. You don’t just say things like that because you’re trying to be funny.

  28. A on September 28th, 2011 10:57 pm

I’ve only seen the first episode so far this season, and I have to say I thought the Klaine scenes seemed… different than they had last season. It didn’t occur to me that it could be due to the age change until I came here, but it makes tons of sense now that I think about it. The dynamic between the characters definitely changed. Don’t get me wrong, I am the HUGEST Klaine shipper, but I think a huge part of the charm of their storyline was that they weren’t immediately thrown together, that Blaine mentored Kurt first, and how even though Kurt thought of Blaine as a mentor, he was ultimately the more confidant one. Hopefully that dynamic doesn’t change too much…

As for people’s weirdly strong dislike for Blaine in these comments- i’m not going to lie. I only started watching glee because I found out a Starkid had been cast in a mainstream TV show and wanted to support them. To be honest, at the time I wasn’t a huge fan of glee or Criss- he didn’t have one of the more memorable parts in AVPM/ AVPS. However, after seeing the first episode with Blaine in it, I became a regular watcher, because
    1) the song numbers were great
    2) Chris Colfer surpassed every rave I’d heard about his acting nhe is by far the best on the show
    3) Darren Criss brought charm and effort to his role that I hadn’t seen in Harry. Harry was funny, but he clearly put a huge amount of effort into his scenes, and it shows. He pleasantly surprised me- I think he’s one of the best actors on the show.
    4) that Darren and Chris always had scenes together was an added bonus- they really act well together. As some of the best actors on the show, their scenes are always thoughfully acted. (Disclaimer: I like all the other actors as well, I just don’t think they include the same level of subtlety in their performances)
    5) the klaine storyline was incredible. It was slowly built up with quite a bit of complexity. Unlike the shows other, been- done, cliche plots, this one really broke new ground on TV in a lot of ways.

I think Chris has a lot of charisma, which clearly shows in interviews, but I hope he isn’t being serious about why he thinks Blaine and Kurt are together. I mean, obviously no relationship is perfect, and Klaine should represent that, but I hardly think the characters are together because of circumstances alone. I think the way the soryline has been handled seems to indicate they actually care about each other. Maybe it’s just a pipe dream, dunno, it just seemed that way to me.

I know that if Darren or Chris was removed from the show I’d stop watching (esp. Darren though) They may not be able to carry Glee on their own, but I would one day love to see him both of them play the lead in their own movie or show.

    Just my opinion. 🙂

How ’bout that Hulu outrage though?

    1) I loved the songs
    2) I think

  29. Matsu919 on September 29th, 2011 10:46 am

WHAT? Now they said Kurt is OLDER than Blaine? How dare they can do such a rediculos thing? I’m extremely depressed since I found out this sudden change..Kurt must be strong, mature., sarcatistic but delicate beautiful YOUNGER boy! Blaine should be his mentor. At least, that’s what Ryan himself had told to the public. Blaine may be a little silly but he had been a mature, dapper and sexy older mentor in S2. I hate the fact Blaine is shorter and younger than Kurt. It caused me depression-associated insomnia… Oh I think I should stop watching the show…but unfortunatelly I love Kurt too much to do that. How on earth many people gotten frustrated by this change? If most of us are feeling unpleasant on this change, can we file our petition for making some changes to Ryan? That Kurt has skipped a year? That’s one of the reason he is picking on because he is too smart and younger than others? Does it make sense? Oh I’m too confused to sleep…Someone agree with me, please? I don’t feel like reading my favorite Glee fan fics now. Some of the writers started writing Blaine as younger, more innocent and weaker than Kurt…I cant stand it. I prefer Kurtofsky.Sigh…Really sorry for my breakdown.

i love any songs chris or darren as blaine and kurt will sing cant wait for more and all i know is i love klaine and they sud be together and i don’t no why they say they solid and they bring someone that comes to break them up even if no break up drama in there life who needs that seriously im over those triangles that is a waste of time they cud have think of somthing else so many things out there but i see this as some viewers dont believe that kurt loves blaine as much and blaine loves kurt so if they heading for this idea im all for it but nothing more or further sud happen because then everyone wud really lose interest in this show and the characters they make viewers grow to love i no its tv but what else is there we love our shows and the character they betray and also to those that think chris is not a fan of klaine i think your wrong about what he kept on saying these no option mayb he knew and we didnt catch on oh well i just sit and watch all this and either this wil make klaine stronger as a couple that they only love each other and they didnt need anyone else to make them realise this that which i still dont no why they wud need to test there love anyways or a disaster to happen so lets hope we all get something worth watching sorry for my ranting im so upset and need to let out sigh…
