What Happened During the Final Shocking Moments of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER?

November 21, 2011 by

The following contains MAJOR spoilers for tonight’s episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Don’t read any further if you haven’t yet seen the episode.

SPOILER ALERT!

What the WHAT?

Um, sorry can you repeat that?

I thought I just you say you were pregnant, Scherbatsky! As in, with child.

Oh you did? Ok then.

What the WHAT?

Yes, in the shocking final moments of tonight’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Robin revealed to Barney that she was pregnant.

But is he the dad?

Barney and Robin did indeed have sex, but Robin was also with her beau Kevin. Oh Robin, how very soap opera-esque of you. Quick! Someone call Maury Povich.

So who is the baby daddy?

I’m sure I’m not the only one hoping it’s Barney. It has to be, right? Please? And if so, can we hope that it was Robin that Barney was moments away from marrying in the season premiere?

Barney a dad and Robin a mom. The kid will be screwed up, but come on…aren’t we all.

What did YOU think of tonight’s shocking ending? Do you think it will be revealed that Barney is the father? Good news or bad, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER fans.

I find it ironic that Cobie and Allison had to hide their real life pregnancies in the same season and now they both are fake pregnant in the same season.
Awesome twist that’s got me excited to watch this show again. In my mind, the future suddenly looks bright for HIMYM.

If these characters were all in their 20’s I might be a bit more weary of this new direction, but where these characters are in life, I like that they show has allowed them to grow up while still allowing them their silly kid-like moments. It’s very true to life…at least coming from this 30-something year old.

I knew it! With the spoilers for next weeks episode, and a hunch, and Barney (and Ted) talking babies, and babies everywhere, and then Robin locking herself in the bathroom and acting strange.. it was so obvious. I was suspicious ever since Sandy Rive’s line “mystery gift bag”.. it’s protection!” line and the tick, tick, tick making me think of clock, biological clock…. Adding that to next weeks casting spoiler, and the theme of this weeks epi (babies) — I had a feeling about this, but I did not want to believe it. well, you better believe it I guess.

As to how it goes — I cannot believe that it’s real, it’s got to be a false alarm, otherwise none of the casting spoilers and confirmed story lines can happen. I mean… Kevin’s got to go (so I guess his exit has to do with R/B confessing that they had a thing, as he may not be the only daddy candidate) … and we know Barney kind of gets distracted by someone else, so how would that work if she really was pregnant?

I really cannot see them agreeing to keep this under wraps just to keep their night a secret from Kevin, and agree that who ever is the daddy, Kevin will play the daddy. And how is Barney ever gonna seriously move on when he knows he might be the dad?

If Robin really is pregnant, and will have this baby, and they continue with this story line thought the rest of the season, then how will that work? Unless all the spoilers have been misleading, and I get my dream scenario. Which I doubt, since this is a tv show, and they always torture me with their story line 🙂 How long can they continue pretending, and how long will they let Kevin believe he’s the dad, just to not screw up R/K relationship. I really really hope they don’t go there, but I’m afraid they will. Because if it’s only a scare, then how doesn’t it make then re-evaluate everything, and take the leap together?

none of this is even making sense to me anymore.

I wish she was pregnant, and I wish they could do a dna test (I know it’s possible even during pregnancy, not just after the birth), and I wish it was Barney’s, and I wish they’d tell Kevin about that night, and I wish he couldn’t accept the “cheating” and I wish he left, and I wish that even though Barney and Robin don’t get together right then, he’d be there for her during key moments. I wish… But I doubt this will be the scenario.

I apologize. I still have so so many feelings. And I’m not making any sense.

I do not like where they have gone with the Barney and Robin relationship over the last couple episodes and like even less what happens at the end of this episode. While I’d ultimately like to see them together, I don’t like how they are potentially doing so.

I know i’m in the minority here but I HATE this and am praying for a false positive/jumping to a conclusion. Either would work. I’m not a fan of Barney and Robin (never hated them until the past few weeks). I find Robin fickle…give Ted a actual relationship and she’ll be back angsting over him. I actually liked Nora and Barney, but that’s done with now.

No matter…I don’t really watch this show for the romantic relationships, I MUCH prefer the friendships.

I hope Barney is the father but I think they are gonna make us suffer for a while.

Now that they’ve made Robin pregnant, they had best damn well keep her that way. They’ve already done the false positive thing once on the show, not to mention Robin telling Barney she’s pregnant when she wasn’t (in Right Time, Right Place), so the writers really have no believable reason to do that again. Plus, the most telling sign – Robin in this episode was so crazy and bipolar, she has to be either pregnant or else completely unhinged by last week’s episode’s events. So for my own sanity’s sake, I’m assuming Robin truly is pregnant.

I really didn’t expect this at all. I’ve known for a long time that Barney and Robin are destined to be together, but I didn’t see the P-bomb coming – even with the whole ‘adopting a baby’ and Robin being so crazy, I didn’t expect it at all. I didn’t think the writers were going in that direction, and all the casting rumors (what with a new love interest for Barney, and Robin’s crush from last season still due to make an appearance) point more away from a pregnancy than towards it.

That being said, I loved tonight’s episode. The only complaint I had, up till the last two minutes, was that there wasn’t any Robin/Barney interaction. But I can see where that would be realistic, and I love everything that happens after Barney tells Ted that “It gets pretty tough.” I love how he seeks out Robin when it’s clear he needs someone to talk to, despite last week’s events (although I have to mention that I think it’s kind of creepy that the bathroom can be seen from the road, and that the bathroom windows are that big).

I also love how Barney asks if they’re still friends, and she replies, “I hope so.” And then of course Barney begins to unburden his soul to her in typical Barneyistic fashion, concluding with the line that nearly made me tear up – “Can you imagine me, being someone’s dad?” Props to NPH for some amazing work in this episode – we got both funny, and serious, and in this line, a mix of the two. Because we all know that he’s asking Robin a serious question here.

And her response? “I’m pregnant.” How do you even begin to react to that? I can’t wait to find out. But right now, as I replay those last two minutes over and over again, I have to wonder, is there some correlation between Barney asking that question, and her answering with, “I’m pregnant?” Because it looked to me like she wasn’t intending to tell anyone, least of all Barney – at least not yet, if ever. And yet, she blurts it out, and in a way, it felt like an answer to his completely rhetorical question. I like to imagine that by telling him she’s pregnant, even if she’s not aware of it herself, Robin’s sort of saying, “Yes. I can imagine you as a dad, or else I wouldn’t be telling you this.”

I think it says a lot about their relationship that even after her breaking his heart last week, he still can go up to her and ask to be friends and sort of share one of his deepest fears with her. And that she can, in turn, in what looks like their first true conversation since that night, tell him one of the most private things that a woman can ever tell anyone. There have been moments in the past where I’ve doubted Robin/Barney, but after tonight, I honestly have no doubts at all.

And I’m 85% sure she’s Barney’s Bride – what other bride would want to see the best man before the wedding? It makes sense for Robin to be asking to see Ted, though – she established in False Positive that she wants Ted as her best man, presumably for the same reason Barney wanted to see Ted. Unless some woman Barney dates later this season also becomes really close friends with Ted, I’m betting on Robin as Barney’s Bride.

That being said, I’m really interested in how they get to that point, and where the writers take this whole pregnancy thing. The first question is, of course, who the hell’s the dad? The options: Kevin or Barney.

But could it be Kevin? Him and Robin aren’t really shown as that sexually active, and he seems like the kind who’s easygoing enough to agree to take it slow if that’s what she’d prefer. I actually have a theory that the reason Kevin said “I love you” to Robin last week was because he was hoping to get lucky that night – I mean, boat cruise plus non-fatal injury plus unconditional forgiveness for some sin he doesn’t even know about plus an ‘I love you’ would probably be enough for a normal woman to put out, if Barney Stinson wasn’t in the equation. I can’t make up my mind if even Robin would be promiscuous enough to sleep with Kevin, especially since she was initially hesitant about even kissing her former therapist. In fact, on the whole, I would guess they haven’t gotten that far yet, despite Robin being pretty lax about the whole sleeping around thing. Which would mean, if Robin were to tell Kevin she was pregnant, he’d have to dump her, right?? I know he’s nice, but I seriously doubt that his niceness extends to raising a kid with her.

If Robin hasn’t slept with Kevin, though, that’s something Barney should already be aware of. In Garbage Island, Barney could guess with one look how long it had been since Robin ‘got some,’ so in this scenario, he would know instantly he’s the father. (I’m really hoping for this scenario, but considering Robin’s promiscuity, plus the writers’ tendency to choose the most complicated storylines possible, I kind of doubt its veracity.)

If Kevin and Robin did have sex though, all bets are off. For all we know, it could very well be Kevin’s baby, much as I hate the thought. That should lead to a lot of drama between Barney and Robin – unpleasant, maybe, but definitely entertaining for us viewers. I don’t think Kevin’s going to end up as the baby daddy though, since it’s been said that Kal Penn’s role is short-lived.

No matter what possibilities are out there, I’ve pretty much made up my mind that it’s Barney’s baby. There has to be some rule somewhere in the Unwritten Code of Screenwriters that says it’s Barney’s baby. It sounds crazy, but I feel like Robin’s womb would reject any other person’s sperm…

Regardless of whose baby it is, there’s still the grand question of ‘What is Robin going to do now’? Two options: have the baby, no matter whose it is, or abort. For some reason though, people who have unplanned pregnancies in TV shows rarely ever get abortions, even if they’re totally set against babies at first. I don’t think the screenwriters will have Robin get an abortion – I think the idea of a pregnant Robin has a lot of chuckle factor, which they’re sure to want to exploit. To be completely consistent, though, they should have Robin (and Barney) at least explore the possibility – and then reject it in the favor of starting a family together.

In the casting calls for Robin’s children, the oldest was sixteen, so unless Robin’s telling the story at an earlier date, the child she’s currently carrying probably won’t be seen onscreen. This doesn’t necessarily mean he/she won’t be born – if he/she is born in 2012, he/she would be 18 and legally out of the house and in college by 2030, so maybe that’s why he/she won’t be portrayed.

Honestly, there’s no telling where this could lead, and I’m really excited for that. Of course there’s a lot of room for character development with this storyline, not to mention jealousy scenes!! I love jealous-Barney 😀 And of course, a cute baby at the end. Can’t wait.
P.S. Sorry for the ginormous post…

I figure Kevin will be exiting fairly soon, as Kal Penn is working for the Obama campaign, so the father has to be Barney.
