BONES’ ‘Male in the Mail’: You Ask, I Answer

November 18, 2011 by

BONES may be off next week for the Thanksgiving holiday, but Fox just sent out a screener for the December 1st episode, “Male in the Mail.” And while that may seem like painful boasting to you guys, the good news is that after I viewed the hour, I answered a few of your burning questions!

Read on…

[I]s this the episode where we find out more about [B]ooth’s past? Any details!?! #Bones – @leriam10 via Twitter
It is! “Male in the Mail” will shed some new light on Booth’s youth and also dig a little deeper into what we already knew. (And there’s a nice callback to something we learned last season, too.)

How traumatic is this ep for Booth? Will it resolve his issues with his dad? Or just open up new ones? – @HeartsBooth via Twitter.
Pretty freakin’ traumatic. As for the (many) issues Booth has with his dad, the hour serves to open up old wounds and heal others. But if Booth had his way, everyone would just leave him alone about it.

Will we see finally Bren telling Booth the real reason why his dad left him and Jared? What Hank [t]old her? – @wellsbones via Twitter
What Brennan was told in “The Foot in the Foreclosure” isn’t directly dealt with in this episode.

Is David really great in this episode? Do we get an incredible B&B scene? – @seriously_what via Twitter
Yes to both! David Boreanaz has one of his finest episodes of the series, as Booth struggles to come to terms with the news Pops has for him. As for B&B, without spoiling too much, you absolutely will get what you asked for.

How is Brennan there for Booth? Will we get to see it? – @BrennanBooth via Twitter
We all know that Booth is supposed to be the “heart” portion of the team, and Brennan does make a little faux pas in trying to help with the situation. However, despite reaching out to a friend to figure out how to appropriately support her boyfriend, when all is said and done, she has things under control.

Does Sweets finally ditch Daisy and find someone good enough for him? 😉 #Bones #NeverGiveUp – @Laffers18 via Twitter
There’s no Daisy in the episode, so your dream of a Swaisy split isn’t coming to fruition. But if you did want to see Clark talking about a certain part of Brennan’s anatomy repeatedly, well, you’re in luck. (To be fair, Brennan brought up the part of her body first, but it’s SO weird to have Clark be that fascinated with Brennan.)

So, are you looking forward to “Male in the Mail”?

I hope what Hank told Brennan is not completely forgotten about like so many other things. HH has a tendency to drop things that he makes a big deal about.

Is this going to be another Brennan having to learn a lesson again. I am really tired with that each week.

Look forward to the episode and having Hank back. I just don’t want to see Brennan just making more mistakes and then finally “learning” in the end.

2 weeks is 2 long to wait!!! I feel like I just got my beloved Bones back 🙂 And I’m dying to know about this BB scene you allude to!!

  3. CarlagUK on November 19th, 2011 5:24 am

I must agree with El. and particularly when you have a character (Hank) who is only making his second appearance in the show. What he said to Brennan in ‘Foot in the Foreclosure’ will be remembered and was very significant. For this not be part of this upcoming episode seems wrong.
It will be a few weeks before this episode is aired in the UK as the show only started on November 16th. All that seems to be coming out of this hype, is how good David Boreanez’s acting skills are. I am sure he will be excellent, but it also would be good to see the roles reversed a little and to see Brennan, just for once and I repeat, just for once being the one to truly understand and help him through his ordeal.

Still I look forward to viewing. Love the show.

Thank you, Marisa, for this preview!
I look forward to watching David Boreanaz’ fine performance! In addition to a powerful screen presence, the guy has achieved great acting and directing skills. From Angel to Booth, during all these years on Bones, he improved himself and became a really really good actor. Too bad the writers give him the chance to display his skills for drama only twice a year, maybe. Hence, I’m impatiently waiting to see him taking one of these rare chances and making the absolute best of it. I expect an intense performance.

So Booth gets to shine in a Big Special Episode but Brennan still just gets to be ‘speshul’. The connection established between her and Pops is not even MENTIONED? Why don’t they just change the name of the series to ‘Booth’?

  6. kara thrace on November 19th, 2011 5:18 pm

    bitter much sunny? LOL
    it’s only fair:
brennan got a special episode last year and emily deschanel got the chance to shine.
this year booth will get a special episode and boreanaz will get his chance to shine.
fair opportunities cause the show might be called bones but it has two main characters and two lead actors.

  7. sunny on November 20th, 2011 1:00 pm

Yeah, I’m bitter because they have turned a once magnificent, kickass female character into a needy buffoon who needs to be taught a lesson every. single. episode. I will never understand why women are still swooning over this horrific mess.

  8. Ltm on November 20th, 2011 4:50 pm

Emily D was pregnant! She couldn’t possibly shoot a Brennan-centric episode this year 😉

  9. sunny on November 20th, 2011 6:29 pm

LMAO! So pregnant women are useless eh? They can’t do anything, not even act. God forbid a pregnant Emily should remain the star of her own show and have episodes which focus on the TITULAR character and allowing her to shine. Perhaps HH should have sent Bones to bed rest with some Bon Bons and had her ‘phone it in’. He certainly doesn’t have a problem with making ED talk like a retarded robot. You will never convince me Emily is doing that of her own free will. You have only to look at and listen to that lovely lady in Pilot to realize she’s been forced to act like a buffoon since just after the 100th.

  10. Jillian on November 20th, 2011 9:08 pm

Brennan has had so many episodes to shine in. When she found that her mom died, finding out the real reason why her parents left, reconnecting with her dad and brother again and Max’s trail. I think this show equally about Booth as it’s about Brennan…so I think it’s important to learn about Booth and his past too. We know absolutely nothing about Booth. We know Brennan’s every little dark secret. This whole show is about their relationship. Not just about Brennan. They should develop his past and character a little. They should done this a few seasons ago. It doesn’t mean that this whole show is going to be all about Booth now. If you don’t agree with that…then maybe you shouldn’t watch this show…or waste your time talking about miserable you are with this show.

Geez. Anyways, I hope they mention Booth’s mom in this episode.

  11. Jillian on November 20th, 2011 9:15 pm

Plus…Emily was pregnant. She can’t be in every single scene and shoot any big Brennan-centric episode…

@Sunny If you think this show is such a horrific mess…than why the hell are you still commenting on this show? Make it easier for everyone. You don’t have to read people’s post about how much they still love this “horrific mess” and we don’t have to listen to you complain and bitch about what a “horrific mess” this show is. Okay?

  12. Jillian on November 20th, 2011 9:31 pm

Oh…and what’s this all this stuff about Emily hating this show now? We have absolutely no idea what she thinks of this show. I think Emily really likes that nasty, sexist type humor. Her husband is an actor/writer/producer for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and that really nasty, crude, sexist humor. She has to at least appreciate that type of humor if she married that guy.

  13. sunny on November 20th, 2011 10:21 pm

I’m still commenting on this show because I have every bloody right to rant and rave about the severe dumbing down of a female character I loved on a show I used to love and rave about. Nobody is forcing you to read or comment on my comments yet here some of you are, trying to start an argument with me instead of sincerely engaging the point.

I just find this attitude of acceptance among female fans strange and disturbing. I should think as women you would at least wonder why a beautiful and talented actress has gone from portraying a high functioning, sophisticated, independent woman to having to act a buffoon who can barely tie her own shoes. Even her styling makes her look matronly and a-sexual like a special needs child. IMO, this calls for actual concern on the part of women that there might be a misogynistic agenda at play here.

And NO, you only have to watch a few interviews with ED to know sexist humor would not amuse her in the least. ED and DB had an ON CAMERA semi-serious disagreement about whether or not Brennan should have a baby. DB was firm that she would, ED was firm in her belief that Bones is not the type to have a baby and should be respected for her decision. Well, guess what? Clearly Emily’s views on her character has been completely overruled.

  14. Jillian on November 21st, 2011 3:35 am

Seriously, she married that guy, David Hornsby…and his show has the ultimate nasty sexist humor. I think I even read an article where Emily said that one of the things that attracted her to her husband was his sense of humor. IDK. I know one knows what Emily really thinks. That interview happened over 3 years ago.

  15. Claire on November 22nd, 2011 11:58 am

New to watching Bones but not to reading the novels Bones. I agree that Bones should be more like the character we saw in the Pilot that is Bones, In the books Bones has a daughter from her marriage and the her name is Kathleen. I really do not see anything close to the TV Bones except only in the Pilot. The show main character is Bones and yet it seems more like Booth is the main character, He is forever jumping from one girlfriend to another. He has relationship issues. Now he went from Hannah to Bones with I love you. Please, I would love to see one show where he tells Bones he not only loves her but is in love with her. That would be great, We know that Bones is in love with Booth becasue she shows it over and over with the little things she does for him.

  16. Logan on November 22nd, 2011 3:09 pm

Will baby bones be born before or after the upcoming break? I really want to know!!

  17. Sarah on November 23rd, 2011 9:22 am

Totally with Sunny and Claire !! I went back to reading Kathy Reichs books and watching S1 DVD because what attracted me to that show was exactly what Sunny described : “a magnificent, kickass female character”… I really would like to get her back !!! And I also agree that, after having seen Deschanel act in Pilot, it’s hard to believe she actually enjoys playing the sad caricature of herself that Brennan has become… 🙁

  18. Charlotte on November 25th, 2011 10:12 am

I’m delighted that Booth is finally going to have his story explained! It’s about time! I can’t believe we’ve made it to the 7th season while knowing this little about one of the main characters.

DB is a fantastic actor who always knocks these performances out of the park (the 100th still kills me, he’s so good in it) and I can’t wait to see what he’s going to deliver this time.

With regards to Brennan, I find it interesting that those people who would wish Brennan be the same as she was in season 1 claim to love the character, but at the same time begrudge her the happiness she’s found through being able to change.

Season 1 Brennan would never have allowed herself to fall in love, take a risk on that love and have a baby with the man she loves. She HAD to change in order to have the life she eventually wanted. That doesn’t make her weaker, it takes true strength to recognise your weaknesses and change them.

Brennan is stronger now than she’s ever been – yeah, she makes mistakes because she get’s nervous and retreats back into her old ways, but then she realises what she’s done and makes amends. She’s never going to find being in a relationship with someone easy because she’s so alien to most human interaction, but she’s prepared to work on it because she loves Booth. And thankfully, he’s endlessly patient with her.

  19. Barbora on November 28th, 2011 12:58 pm

You seem like experts on Bones to me, so I would like to ask you if I just missed something or there was an episode where Vincent was killed and Booth was comforting Bones (without showing what happened afterwards) and then there was the last episode where she told him she was pregnant… Was it really just like that? After waiting so long for them to get together, they showed NOTHING at all, not even a kiss ????? It was a lot disappointing to me…

  20. Erin on November 28th, 2011 1:49 pm

@barbora – nope, didn’t miss anything. Although there was a time period between the two episodes so they could have been still seeing each other, but it hasn’t been brought up as of yet. Oh, she did tell Angela that she slept with him, but I forget if that was the same episode as the death or one after. But no – we never saw B&B together, be it in the bed or a peck on a cheek.

  21. Carmen on November 28th, 2011 1:59 pm

Charlotte, I could not have said it better myself!! and Barbora, you did not miss a thing. Booth comforted Brennan the night that Vincent died and the next day she told Angela (with out really let us know) that she slept with Booth. I was disappointed as well but so far the B&B moments this season are slowly making up for it. 🙂

  22. Barbora on November 28th, 2011 3:03 pm

Thank you 🙂 … although Im still disappointed 😀

  23. Angie the second on November 28th, 2011 11:13 pm

Totally agree with what you said Charlotte. In order for Bones to be in a relationship with Booth(which she has wanted since season 6-The Doctor In the Photo), she had to change. Change is inevitable when your in a relationship. I don’t think she has changed all that much. She is still being her typical, scientific, independent self. She has to think about his feelings along with her own now. She is still the same Bones, but has had to adapt to giving 100% of herself to another. There is nothing wrong with that. We all do that when we find that special someone. What is so bad about her changing? With all due respect, if you don’t like the new Bones then you never liked her to begin with. I think she is still a very strong, independent woman. She is not only commited herself to Booth, but is now carrying another life. She had to change. If she hadn’t , she would not be with Booth and certainly not starting a family with him. I am happy with the direction of the show. Can’t wait to see their baby born and these two doing the whole first time parent thing. Of course, Booth is not a first time parent, but technically he is when it comes to the Bones/Booths baby.
