ONCE UPON A TIME: Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis Tease a ‘Wonder’-ful Episode 17

February 23, 2012 by

ONCE UPON A TIME’s first season has delighted in showing us the different aspects to the fairytale characters we’ve known for years, but an upcoming episode is set to take things even further with a non-fairytale story.

With so many rumors about what’s going on in episode 17, it only seemed to fair to go to the source for some answers to our questions. ONCE UPON A TIME creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis talked with a small group of reporters earlier today to tease what fans can expect from the mysterious hour…

“It’s one of our favorite episodes,” Kitsis shared of episode 17. “It’s been reported we go to Wonderland…[Sebastian Stan] plays the Mad Hatter, and in that episode, we find out how the Mad Hatter became mad…Sebastian Stan is so good in this role, he’s brilliant.”

In addition to the introduction of the Mad Hatter, the duo also got to work with one of their favorite musicians for the hour.

“We’re very excited the hookah-smoking caterpillar will be played by Roger Daltrey of The Who,” Kitsis added. “Anyone who knows Adam and I, there have been two constants in our life when we write, no matter what show: it’s Led Zeppelin and Who’s ‘Tommy,’ the actual 1969 album. When we did this pilot, we were like, ‘We want it to be like that! A thick rock-opera.’ And so when Roger agreed to do the voice, we geeked out, we cried, and screamed.”

So what makes this Wonderland different from the one we’ve seen portrayed in various books and movies?

“Like anything, we like to do our ONCE take on it and twist,” Horowitz teased. “You’ll see.”

“I think the first thing you’ll notice the difference is who the Mad Hatter was and his backstory,” Kitsis added. “And what Wonderland is and the changes of it, it’s something we hope to explore also. This [episode] tells you the story of Mad Hatter, but it will leave you with questions about Wonderland.”

What are you hoping to see in Wonderland?
