BONES Might Get Additional Season 7 Episodes

January 8, 2012 by

Stop me if you’ve heard this before…BONES season 7 episode order may be changing.

As you may remember, when the show was renewed in May, Fox ordered 22 episodes. Then at the last TCA, Fox’s President of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly told me they would only make 13 episodes this year due to series star Emily Deschanel’s (Brennan) maternity leave. A few months later, the plans changed and they decided to add an additional four episodes to the season, which would air at some TBD time.

But now, things have changed again.

“There are episodes that haven’t been programmed yet that will either move into next season if we go forward or play into the summer,” Reilly said. “But we don’t have 22 on the schedule but we ordered 22. We need to do a new deal with BONES for next season if we’re going to keep it going. I’d like to keep it going.”

However, when I pointed out last we heard there would only be 17 episodes, he slightly amended his statement.

“We programmed 17, but we ordered 22 for the season,” he told me. “Well, let me clarify that — we ordered as many as they could produce with Emily, so if they can produce 22 when she comes back, that’s what we’ll make. You are accurate about that. We ordered, ultimately, it ended up being 17 because that was all she could do. But if she comes back, they may ultimately end up making 22.”

So…there’s that.

This is great news, I think, it is so confusing.

So, basically, I’m reading this as: if they can find the time to film all 22 episodes, they will?

I’m concerned that the ambiguity around extra episodes will cause them to simply produce more “stand alone” episodes that don’t allow them to advance the relationship/family story.

I THINK this is good news, but I am not sure. I would love more Bones episodes this season, but not just random filler ones. i guess time will tell. As always, thanks for the update Marisa!

I truly wish they’d decide when to air the extra episodes, but I understand that scheduling is a difficult job. Maybe they’re waiting for the Finder’s ratings until they decide how many episodes Bones will air this spring.

I thought Emily was back last month?
So why the ambiguity? A little confused here, are they hedging their bets because of The Finder?

We know that Fox made new deals with TJ, MC and TT. Not sure about JFD. Who else are they dealing with? ED/DB? Or HH/SN?

Bottom line, I want s8. I’m loving things so far this year! Big reversal from last season! 🙂

“But if she comes back, they may ultimately end up making 22.”
If these were his actual words, he’s very ambiguous and…..uninformed: she came back already last month. Bones cast and crew filmed episode 7 in december. Doesn’t the president of Fox Entertainment know it?

Also “We need to do a new deal with BONES for next season if we’re going to keep it going.”
Kinda unnerving. It was my understanding that Bones cast signed new contracts, complete with new salaries, a few months ago for an eventual season 8. Now they “need to do a new deal”?

  11. Sara on January 8th, 2012 4:29 pm

Vy: There has been no official renewal yet. They negotiated a new deal with the supporting cast, giving them a raise for a POSSIBLE season 8. It was never explicitly stated that there would be a season 8. So, as they haven’t officially renewed the show yet, they have to make a new deal with HH/SN, regardless of the status of the actors.

Oh, that would be awesome to have extra episodes!!

Its kind of funny to hear people say…random filler episodes that don’t progress the family story…etc.

What exactly can they do to progress the story beyond having a baby, buying a house, and getting back to work…. I think it’s a good thing if the stories start being once again about the kind of dynamic they had in seasons 1-4…and not all about the ship…because that ship, while still incredibly interesting isn’t likely to change a lot unless something rocks the boat…and we all don’t want to see that… so random stories that have great chemestry with all the characters and great plots…is just fine with me. The stories can still have continuity and progress, but it’s the content of the character of the stories that matters the most! I’ll be thrilled to get more of what we’ve been getting!

Excellent point Mommahurley! I’d love for there to be more episodes!

Good to hear about possibly getting a full season/ extended 8th season. Just got into the series three weeks ago and am craving more. My only complaint with the series is that the show jumped the shark at the end of season 6. However since there was 6 seasons of build up it was nice to at least see it happen. Oh and I may be the minority but I wish they would have extended the Gormagon arc.

Bring on more season 7, 8, and hopefully to 10.

I really think Bones is the best dramatic series we’ve had for a very long time and I sure don’t want to see it disappear. There is so little worth watching on TV anymore (in my oponion) What can I do as a fan to insure its’ longevity and keep it going for 8 more seasons? The whole cast is sooo good and just seem to gel so well consistently. I even watch the reruns.
