About Last Night…HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, SMASH, CASTLE and More

March 20, 2012 by

Monday TV! I’m trying to enjoy the “slow” weeks before CW comes back and shakes things up further, but man, it’s still a crazy night of television…

I joked yesterday that I hoped HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER‘s robe scene had chanting and it did. And it was fabulous. Of course Barney has a monk guy who can get a “bro” chant…why did we even doubt this?! The Quinntervention was hysterical, and I like her more now that we saw how far she went to prank her boyfriend’s friends. But what the heck was up with Ted’s “not seeing each other for a long time” line about Robin?!

Some great battle rounds on THE VOICE last night. However, I think Erin Martin was the first contestant I actively rooted against for her personal behavior. Was I the only one really annoyed with how it seemed like she acted? (And as for the other Erin, I’m sorry, but if you have a contestant whose father is literally dying, you can’t not pick them. Thank goodness nice Erin actually sings fantastically.)

Ewwwwwww, ALCATRAZ. Using hair as a violin bow string? I figured that’s where Webb Porter’s hair fascination was going, but the confirmation was icky. (And so very X-FILES-y!) And finally Lucy wakes up! I’m so thrilled Doc and Rebecca now know the truth, too.

Lots of thoughts about SMASH! I’m so glad the show used Thorsten Kaye beyond the one-line appearance last week. Eileen threatening to lay the smackdown on Ellis if he reveals the affair Julia was having with Michael was also amazing. (Can Ellis go away now, please? And he can take Leo with him.) I’m SO glad Ivy didn’t bomb the workshop, because that would have felt entirely too easy. I really appreciated that the writers finally wrote a good post-Marilyn audition storyline for Karen, and good for her for sticking around with the workshop despite the better offer…I don’t think most people would have done that. And Derek may be an ass, but I enjoy him so much.

The only bad things about SMASH were the ridiculous firing of Michael (the fact that three of the four people who had the authority to decide his fate knew about his affair with Julie and Derek didn’t is ridiculous…at least clue the guy in) and the introduction of Ivy’s mother. Given what little we were told about Ivy’s relationship with her mother initially, the fact that she is a superstar seemed to come out of the blue. Oh well.

CASTLE was fun, but not super important overall. I loved the silly Ryan and Esposito subplot with the wedding ring, we got THE SECRET CIRCLE’s Drunk Ethan on our screens (fine, Adam Harrington wasn’t playing his TSC character, but until they kill him off and take that away from us, Drunk Ethan he shall be), and there were some cute moments…a nice “fluffy” episode. (Next week? Not so much with the fluffy. So I’m okay with the changing things up.)
