SUPERNATURAL: 7 Teases About ‘The Born-Again Identity’

March 22, 2012 by

SUPERNATURAL has been teasing the return of Misha Collins since late last year, and after watching his first episode back on the series (airing Friday night at 9 PM on The CW), I have to admit it surpassed what even I expected to be packed into the hour.

While I don’t want to give too much away, there are a few things I can tease about the hour…

  • During Dean’s quest to find someone to help save an institutionalized Sam (who was locked up thanks to his inability to fall asleep — thanks Lucifer!), he gets to kick some demon butt in multiple scenes. Thankfully, he has some unexpected help in one of the instances.
  • Sam being locked up does lead to the one quasi-“case” of the episode: One of his fellow patients claims she isn’t doing some of the harmful things she’s been accused of doing to herself, so Sam sets out to figure out what’s going on. The two share a sweet (platonic) bond.
  • Misha Collins’ return as Emmanuel (man who looks like Castiel) is fantastic. While the dynamic with Dean is a bit different (you can actually view their first moment together again here), Emmanuel and Castiel both share a distinct lack of humor, which makes for some hilarious situations.
  • Meg’s return is…interesting. She has a very specific agenda, but can Dean (or the audience) really trust her?
  • Mark Pellegrino has never been funnier as Lucifer. The tricks Lucifer plays on a sleep-deprived Sam are undeniably cruel (the poor guy just needs some sleep!), but man, he’s at least creative about it. (And yes, there is some amazing off-key singing.)
  • It’s easy to write off acting performances on genre shows, but SUPERNATURAL fans know these guys bring their A-game to the table. Jensen Ackles (Dean), Jared Padalecki (Sam), Collins, and Pellegrino all have noteworthy moments in the hour, which is a feat given how much goes on in the episode.
  • There are multiple scenes I can’t wait to rewatch (and possibly rewind several times) from the hour, but to say too much more about them would spoil some truly awesome moments.

That’s all I should tease for now. But the good news is I also spoke with SUPERNATURAL showrunner Sera Gamble last week, so check back here tomorrow morning for some teases from her about what you can expect from the episode and the rest of the season.

I am looking forward to Sam’s part of the story and that is about it. I hope it’s enough for me, since I’ve been waiting all season for this and it’s being hijacked by Castiel returning. I have not been happy about this aspect for months now. But I hope Sam’s part is enough to make me happy with Sam’s characterization. I also hope Sam’s story is not there and done in only one episode, something I’ve also been fearing for months now. When a man’s psychotic break is completely ignored because his brother can’t handle, whatever it is that he can’t handle, you lose faith in a show. I lost faith, and it is that simple. I hope my faith can be restored and not shattered further.

Can’t wait! I’ve been loving S7 so far and everything I’m hearing for this episode sounds awesome. You are absolutely correct about the calibre of acting – these guys consistently hit it out of the park. Seven years in and SPN is still the best show oon TV.

Saying that I’m looking forward is an understatment. Frantically counting the hours seems a more accurate description of my state of mind :-p
Mostly because I’m absolutely ojerjoyed to see Cas again. But this episode will also bring a climax to the carefull build story about Sam mental breakdown.
I’m also eager to watch Dean react to all those events. He will be worried and desesperate about his baby bro; and angry and happy at the same time when he will discover a very alive and amnesic Cas.
I can’t wait to see those two sharing screen time again. Misha and Jensen are just brilliant when they interact with each other.

I agree with Amy. I’m so sick with all this Castiel stuff. Why can’t the show be about the brothers like it was in the beginning? I’ve been waiting for some Sam stuff since episode 2 and now – just like it happened with TMWKTM – what should be Sam’s big episode turns out to be Castiel’s big episode. 🙁

We haven’t heard from Cas for 6 months, so of course some fans are the most excited about his return. Me included.

Well, it is apparent to anyone who is not just a Sam/Dean ‘girl,” that this show should have been salted and burned years ago. No real story development, just Sam and Dean being used as puppets to maintain an obsessive audience based on personality worship, not compelling story lines. Would have been better for the show if it had died after the end of Season three. THAT would have been a brave move, ending the show on a dramatic hagh and a perpetual cliffhanger. Leave them wanting and wondering, rather than dragging the show out like they have been for the past two seasons. Closing on season three would also avoid most of the really bad story points of later seasons, and most of the gimpfest meta eps, and left behind a body of all the most viable episodes. More is not always better, and more of Sera Gamble and her truly horrific ideas especially so.
