CASTLE: Seamus Dever on Wanting to Hold a ‘Love Intervention’ and the Huck Finn-Tom Sawyer Relationship Between Ryan and Esposito

April 2, 2012 by

While drama Castle and Beckett are sorting through their relationship drama on CASTLE, their actions aren’t only impacting their partnership — it’s also impacting the little family dynamic they’ve developed with Ryan and Esposito.

So while the the two of them are working their issues out, what does this mean for everyone else? I chatted with CASTLE star Seamus Dever (Ryan) to find out…

Things are changing a bit in the Castle and Beckett relationship. How is that impacting Ryan specifically?
Seamus Dever: Gosh, I wish I knew. I don’t know where we’re headed this year, but yes, I think there are changes happening. I can already see it in some of the scripts so they’re tuning it to make it so we all get to reflect on the relationship and build up some things. I think there is some separation that is starting to happen between the two of them, and I think it will cause them to confront that separation and confront their feelings for each other.

How it affects us, I don’t know. I’d love to figure it out. I think we all have gone through this thing before, we’ve run the gamut of how we feel reflecting on their relationships. I think it would be awesome if there was actual, real talk about it, where we get to tell them how we feel. In my mind, it would be awesome if Esposito and I just said, “Hey, admit your feelings. Shut up. You admit your feelings. And you shut up.” And we staged an almost love intervention. In my fantasy world, Esposito and Ryan would be little matchmakers and they would be able to handle their partners and get them to admit their feelings. As far as the truth, when it comes out, I’ll let you know.

Speaking of love, will we be seeing more about Ryan’s marriage in these last batch of episodes?
SD: Not that we’ve done anything so far. I always like it when we do because it brings in little bits of our own life and maybe a little bit of emotion, which is always fun to play versus the standard procedure of dealing with things that happen to other people. It’s always nice to deal with our own lives. But I don’t know. Unless there is something in the last episode, I don’t know. It’d be fun to see how we can take it, as a married man, and bring Jenny back into the equation.

Is Ryan giving any advice about where the relationship should go between Esposito and Lanie, given their state of uncertainty?
SD: We’ve always played it that Ryan doesn’t give Esposito advice; Esposito gives Ryan advice. The way the dynamic has been with the relationship has been very Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. [Laughs] And Esposito is obviously Huck Finn. He’s sort of leading Tom Sawyer down the path and to do things. Whether Ryan is just gullible enough or puts enough trust in Esposito to listen to his advice, I think that’s always been the dynamic — the advice has always been one way. Maybe it’s that Esposito puts up an air that he doesn’t need advice. So, maybe there will be a switch on that. That would be a great switch to encounter, but it’s only been one way. I don’t know why the hell Ryan listens to Esposito, because he’s rarely right about women.

You would think if Esposito is actually serious about Lanie, he would go to his married friend for some advice…
SD: Yeah, exactly. You would think this guy knows what he’s talking about. Maybe someday, Ryan will surprise everybody and be able to sort them all out and their mistakes and miscommunications.

He is the only one in a healthy and stable relationship, after all.
SD: Exactly. Out of all of them! I know! I know.

We don’t know too much about Gates and her situation, so it’s possible, I suppose she also fits that bill, but from what we know, Ryan is it for these guys.
SD: We don’t get real personal with her so far. We’re all a little scared of her, I think!

LOL! You know, I kind of dig the idea of a “love intervention!” Though I can also see the guys just rolling their eyes and saying, “Enough already! Admit it!”
