FRINGE: Anna Torv, Josh Jackson and J.H. Wyman Tease the Peter-Olivia Reunion in 2036

July 23, 2012 by

We know a few things about the upcoming fifth season of FRINGE: we know it takes place in 2036, we know that Peter has now been reunited with Etta, Walter, and Astrid, we know William Bell is still stuck in that amber…but we don’t know where the heck Olivia is and when she’ll be reuniting with her family.

The good news? After the FRINGE Television Critics Association panel for the sci-fi show’s final season, Anna Torv (Olivia) told reporters where Olivia is will be resolved in the first few episodes. And while she’s shared her thoughts on what she’d like the reunion between Olivia and her daughter to be like, she was a bit more vague about what she’d like to see for the reunion between her character and Peter.

“I don’t know what that’s going to be like because we don’t know what happened yet [to land them in amber],” Torv said. When I asked her what she’d hope to see, she laughed and said she didn’t want to answer because knowing things about what’s to come would mean she’d need to lie. (We appreciate not being lied to.)

Executive producer J.H. Wyman was equally coy when talking about the duo getting reunited in the future.

“It’s a good one,” he laughed when I questioned him. “I believe in the Peter relationship with Olivia and I want to make sure it was worthy to all the people invested in that relationship.”

When I pointed out they had a lot to live up to after the reunion in “A Short Story About Love,” he was willing to concede things are going to be a little different this time around.

“It’s actually more of a fractured fairytale than romantic, but in a cool way,” Wyman teased. “I just wanted to make sure people were like, ‘Oh, wow.’ And I think we’re there. What’s really kind of key is what happens after they get out of the amber. And the questions people should be asking, is that from the time Etta disappeared, from the time they went in the amber, what happened? How did they get amber? What happened in the scene? William Bell? How did this happen…there’s a large story there.”

For Josh Jackson (Peter), he was also interested in where the characters would go once they’re reunited.

“We’re past the will they or won’t they part of their relationship now, and so I think the first episode informs quite a bit of how they got into [the situation they were] in 4×19,” Jackson told reporters. “And once we put to bed the Romeo and Juliet [aspect of their tale], I think there’s something equally as interesting about a mother and a father in this dystopian future trying to learn how to be parents — with an adult child, but learning how to be parents — while being lovers, while Peter being a son, I think it’s some interesting stuff for them that doesn’t have to be based on star-crossed romance.”

What are you hoping to see when Peter and Olivia reunite in FRINGE season 5?

(is that from the time Etta disappeared) is that a spoiler? a typo as Olivia instead of Etta or im missing something? Thanks for the article!!

  2. Marisa Roffman on July 24th, 2012 10:15 am

@Longtime: Definitely not a typo, but I can’t speak to whether it was a spoiler, mistake, or whether he just meant from their lives (as in she disappeared after they were ambered)…unfortunately in the mob of people trying to get Joel’s attention, I couldn’t follow up, but I’ll let you guys know if/when I find anything else out.

@euG They haven’t even started filming season 5 yet, therefore that is completely impossible that you saw that being in a future episode. 🙂

@euG Woah! That was some fancy editing. Looks like the superimposed some amber over an image of olivia lying on the table in the lab.

@euG: Actually, the season 5 trailer isn’t EXACTLY of footage from season 5: https://www.givememyremote.com/remote/2012/07/15/fringe-j-h-wyman-on-the-shows-emotional-final-panel-if-that-new-footage-is-from-season-5-and-jeff-pinkners-departure/ I’d bet it’ll end up being true, but it’s not 100& for sure.

    Ok, thanks for clarifying 😉

  11. Luke on July 24th, 2012 6:41 pm

@jacklink01 they started filming series 5 weeks ago

  12. Donna on July 24th, 2012 6:56 pm

They’ve only been filming for a few days, not five weeks

    Thanks for this!
Completely agree with Josh, I want to see them together, it will be far more interesting to see than them torn apart all the time. That will move them forward as characters, being a true family. Can’t wait!

Knowing and watching fringe has made me to come to a conclusion that it is unpredictible but whatever they’re cooking up will be awesome.

I have only now, some are mere suppositions, for that, as expected by us, 5th season of Fringe. But, assuming that Olivia is also removed from the amber, I think she and Peter are still together, a good relationship with the couple, who already had a daughter in the past. Finally, the two together now in 2026, and that’s fine. What I also think, is that their relationship with their daughter as an adult, Etta, is complicated, difficult, because the circumstances can be foreseen. Olivia and Peter will have, in my opinion, get used to connect with a daughter who is already an adult, independent and determined, and, moreover, created without their presence. The Bishop family, I predict, will have relationship problems, but then that would enter the grandfather Walter, I think. But let’s wait and see.

I just want Peter and Olivia together, happy, and parents . How they get to that point, I’ll leave up to Joel, because honestly whatever he comes up with will be doubly more interesting than my take. I do definitely want to see the birth and early years of Etta though. Polivia with a baby will send me flailing!! Also I really want to SEE those missing years quickly filled in, rather than just talked about.

Well i just finished the 4th season today & it was Awesome! I loved the emotion from Peter. He really showed his love for Olivia in the season finale and the audiance could feel it! They Must not skip over the birth, parts of their first 4 years with their daughter. They should not let that connection the audience has with Olivia & Peter that is so central to the show be lost/forgotten! Wow, i just really dont know how they are going to wrap up this fantastic show in just 13 epidodes. I am very disappointed about it ending. I just started watching it in June and immediately got sucked in! Such creativity, imagination & great cast! All the fun & weird from LOST and then some! Please dont skip over Olivia & Peter & Etta in earlier years! Actually PLEASE DONT END THIS FANTASTIC extremely entertaining show! Move to SciFi channel if have to. You CANNOT go by typical ratings anymore with all the many channels/Dvr’ing/netflix & Apple tv. So much on somtimes it takes awhile for people to find/catch up to great shows. Ok i’ll stop now…. Just distressed to know coming to end soon 🙁
