ARROW: Katie Cassidy and Paul Blackthorne Tease ‘Year’s End’

The holiday times are generally a cheerful time of year, but for the Lances on ARROW, things are a bit darker.

“There’s a lot of emotion that goes on — it’s a harsh time,” ARROW star Katie Cassidy (Laurel) told reporters on set late last month of tonight’s holiday episode. “I don’t want to give anything away, but it certainly is an emotional episode for Laurel and her father. Paul [Blackthorne (Detective Lance)] and I work really well together. We like to create backstory and talk it out and it’s awesome. There’s a lot going on in the whole episode.”

As for what’s causing the gloomy mood for the duo, it seems the ghost of Sarah (Lance’s daughter and Laurel’s sister) will be playing a part.

“The daughter we lost on the boat incident with Oliver Queen, she was born on [Christmas], so, happy holidays,” Blackthorne teased. “The anniversary of the death of your youngest daughter…Laurel and Lance try to stick together in that time but all these things keep getting in the way and it goes on and on and on. Something has to get in the way of them dealing with that already difficult time of year. Life is never easy in the Lance household.”

So what does Christmas mean post-Sarah?

“They just try and be together, you know?” Blackthorne noted. “What was once a beautiful house with a family and kids and piano playing and laughter is now just a clatter of cutlery and a walk along the river. It’s the two of us. That’s Christmas as it has been. This year turns out a little different because of the people who are floating around in [Laurel’s] life now, but it’s never a good time.”
