BONES: ‘The Party in the Pants’ You Ask, I Answer

April 11, 2013 by

Booth’s mom returns to her son’s life for the first time in 24 years in this Monday’s brand new episode of BONES, so naturally there are some things going down.

I had the chance to view “The Party in the Pants” a bit early, and after getting some questions from you guys on Twitter, there are a few things I can tease about the hour…

Any continuity issues? Any B&B that should excite us? – @BrennanBooth via Twitter

The good/bad news is so little was known about Booth’s mom prior to this episode that there wasn’t huge continuity issues that I picked up on. As for B&B. they’re basically everything in the episode you’d want them to be as a couple: supportive, loving, and occasionally a little ridiculous with their banter.

How does Marianne justify her not contacting Booth/Jared after they grew up & pops was no longer their parent? – @dovepage  via Twitter

Not well. But her excuses go over better with the on-screen characters than they did for me, personally.

How do the dynamics between Booth & Mom shift as the ep progress’? …. Is the door left open for Mama Booth to return S9? – @HellYeahBooth via Twitter

They shift pretty believably, albeit in a much more rapid pace since things take place in a 42-minute episode. It’s not all sunshine and roses for the duo, because 24 years is a pretty long time to be absent from a loved one’s life. David Boreanaz (Booth) is the episode’s stand-out, by far, as Booth tries to deal with everything. (And while I didn’t time it exactly to get exact minutes, I can’t remember the last time a personal story — that wasn’t directly tied into the case, like Brennan’s shooting was — got so much air time. While it wouldn’t have quite worked with the show’s format, a large part of me wished they had just focused on Booth’s mother coming back for the entire episode.)

And yes, there’s no story reason Mama Booth couldn’t return next year.

Do they mention Jared more? – @valleria93 via Twitter

Unfortunately, Jared is barely brought up. (Seriously, Team BONES, what is Jared doing these days? Did he ever get married?)

Is Booth’s son Parker mentioned during the ep to Booth’s mom, any cute Booth & Christine bonding/scenes? please say yes! 🙂 – @ReuniteFangGang via Twitter

Parker is briefly mentioned, and there is a particularly adorable Booth/Brennan family moment involving Christine, but most of the family stuff is sans kids.

And three bonus teases:

  1. Cam’s reactions to the people around her continue to be top-notch. I hope you guys .gif the heck out of her this episode.
  2. Another series regular (willingly) does a mini-strip dance in the episode.
  3. Brennan and Angela share a little BFF talk.

BONES’ “The Party in the Pants” airs Monday, April 15th at 8 PM on Fox.

Wonderful teases, nothing better than David Boreanaz when he’s “on.” Looking forward to this….although nervous how they are going to make Marianne redeemable.

Love this show and David is such a good actor. They are all good, but it would not be the show it is, if not for David!

Twenty-four years ago, Booth was eighteen years old (we’ve been told that he’s five years older than Brennan, who was born in 1976), and you didn’t notice any continuity issues? According to these numbers, his mother left about the time he graduated from High School! How’s that supposed to work when Pops alledgedly took over as Booth’s only parent when Booth was (in Pops’ own words) “a little boy”?

@suzie Perhaps the last time she and Booth saw each other does not have to mean that was the time Pops took the boys to live with him. It is feasible that she returned to see Booth after she left and that was 24yrs ago.

Booth’s mother was a character in the Bones story that I never really thought too much about. That said I think it’s great that the Bones writers are exploring the back story of all our favorite characters before the end of the series. I’m going to miss this week’s episode because I’m going to be working late at DISH tomorrow when it airs. Thankfully I don’t have to be home anymore to watch shows from my home DVR because I have the DISH Anywhere app on my iPad. I can stream any show I have recorded to my home DVR, or any live TV broadcast, to my iPad wherever I go with access to the internet available.

How can there not be continuity issues when they clearly only decided recently that Booth’s mom was alive / had abandoned him?

If they’d known that all along, they’d clearly have had him mention it all those times Brennan was dealing with her own parental abandonment issues. It does not fill me with confidence when the writer’s show they are making up the backstory to one of their lead characters this late in the game!
