Top 13 TV Episodes of 2013

It’s no secret I watch a lot of TV. Heck, I watch more TV than I should probably ever admit. But there is a lot, lot, lot of good stuff on television — and now, increasingly, through other mediums like Netflix, Amazon, etc. It’s a good time to love quality programming.

As we approach the end of the year, I wanted to note a few of the shows that stood out to me over the past 12 months. First up, we have the top episodes. For me, they were the most enjoyable as a television fan. You may agree with some, all, or none. You may be like me and have your top episodes change 20 times. (Only a slight exaggeration, but I easily could have singled out 25 great episodes this season. Or 50.)

So, these are the 13 hours of television that stuck out to me the most this past year, in alphabetical order of series…

THE OFFICE: 'Finale'

Image 14 of 14

THE OFFICE's final season was a bit bumpy, but the finale -- which included the worst-kept-secret of the year: Steve Carell's return -- was beautiful. Of course insane Dwight and Angela had to end up together, and really, would Michael Scott not come back to witness that wedding? How fitting Carell's first line upon his return was "that's what she said"…it truly was Jim's best prank ever. (And, of course, Pam and Jim got their happy ending, too. After the rough season they had, they deserved it.)

(And yes, I’ll have a top shows post coming up shortly.)

Agree? Disagree? Think a specific episode is missing?

I love Bones, but the wedding episode as a whole was nothing special. The last 15 minutes, where they showed the actual wedding was amazing. The first 45 were just eh.

Cmon! No HOMELAND episode? Big Man in Tehran was amazing. So was The Star.

I just dont understand all this hate… I know season 3 started slow, but the last 5 eps was the best sequel the show ever had.

  3. David on December 24th, 2013 12:20 pm

The Rains of Castamere (Game of Thrones), HEARTBREAKING!!! Great acting, great script, great music, great everything!

  4. Marisa Roffman on December 24th, 2013 12:57 pm

@kCC: I actually really liked the case, too. But I get why the end is the most appealing part for most.

@Tom: HOMELAND made my overall TV list. For this list, I debated one or two, but ultimately felt the last arc worked best as a whole.

I was brought to this page by Raising Hope’s Facebook profile, and I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a list that I disagree more with. So that’s something!

  6. Fleš on December 26th, 2013 11:24 am

Seriously? Doctor Who? Day of the Doctor? 50th anniversary? Nothing?

  7. Renate on December 26th, 2013 11:57 am

Are you kidding me? How about ‘the red wedding’?! I like Bones, but ‘the rains of castamere’ would fit way better in the list than the Bones episode.. Weird list..

  8. Firstfall on December 26th, 2013 11:59 am

Obviously you do not watch Doctor Who or Game of Thrones.

Agreed with a lot of the others though – I’m a HUGE Bones fan, loved The Following and never got into Glee, but that was a huge tv moment.

  9. Stacey on December 26th, 2013 12:04 pm

Ziva’s fairwell episode of NCIS…and like Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that.”

  10. Marisa Roffman on December 26th, 2013 2:08 pm

FWIW, no, I don’t watch GoT or Doctor Who. But glad you guys enjoyed hours from there!

  11. Isa on December 26th, 2013 2:12 pm

I don’t see Game of Thrones there.

  12. Valerie on December 26th, 2013 2:23 pm

I Love BONES, waited for their wedding … at last, sat down to watch on my DVR and my DVR messes up the Last few minutes of the show…. was outraged!!!
I need to catch the re-run 🙁 “sad bones fan”

  13. Raymond on December 26th, 2013 6:56 pm

For me Bones there were 2 main turning points. 1 was the wedding and the other was when Zack was found to be a cannibal back in Season 3 Episode 15 ‘Pain in the heart’ They should being him back occasionally. We or I miss that awkward little guy.

  14. emily on December 26th, 2013 10:17 pm

arrow! that show is awesome!!!!!!!!!! the revelation that Slade is alive!

  15. Blacksoth on December 26th, 2013 10:56 pm

Yeah, not only should the Rains of Castamere episode from Game of Thrones be on the list, it should definitely be #1. There were so many freaking out about that episode it was on multiple late night talk shows and an internet sensation. How exactly did you guys miss it?

  16. Margo on December 27th, 2013 8:36 am

American Horror Story : Coven!! The best hours of tv that I watched this season! It’s amazing!

  17. Reaper on December 27th, 2013 9:12 am

Come on a lot of those are good but NCIS tromps abertrhing else Gibbs is the biggest badass in the face of television

  18. Elizabeth M on December 27th, 2013 2:44 pm

You left out THE epic TV event of the year! Even if your life is void of the love that is Doctor Who (because you like depriving yourself of joy?) there is no excuse for leaving the 50th anniversary special out of a list like this.

  19. Scarlett on December 27th, 2013 2:54 pm

OMG! That Law and Order: SVU Episode was amazing! Benson did an amazing job in that episode especially! That Glee episode was also amazing I cried when Rachel finally sung.

  20. Trish R on December 27th, 2013 3:55 pm

Mad Men, season 6 final episode, “In care of…”. Don Draper gets real. Spell-binding.

  21. Atia on December 27th, 2013 5:17 pm

Absolutely loved The Following so excited to see where it goes

  22. Karina on December 27th, 2013 6:06 pm

I cannot believe there is not even one of the tons of amazing Doctor Who episodes on this site. It makes me dislike the whole entire list.

  23. Vickie on December 27th, 2013 6:10 pm

No SONS?? Can’t believe there was not an episode of SONS!!! 🙁

  24. Cham on December 27th, 2013 6:10 pm

I saw that Psych the musical was on this and got so excited! I completely agree!!

  25. Jasmine on December 27th, 2013 7:20 pm

i refuse to acknowledge the validity of this list as there is nothing from scandal on it, and i agree with the first comment that there was nothing special about the wedding episode of bones.

  26. Peyton on December 27th, 2013 7:32 pm

Doctor Who Day of the Doctor? Largest simelcast EVER? played in 6 continents at the same time? 50th anniversary? I don’t understand this list.

  27. 성우 조 on December 27th, 2013 7:37 pm

Absolutely He was the best quarterback ever

  28. Josh on December 27th, 2013 8:18 pm

As if the Rains of Castamere/ The Red Wedding wasn’t on that list. That was possibly the greatest moment of T.V I have ever witnessed and I knew it was coming.

  29. ShMike on December 27th, 2013 9:12 pm

No Doctor Who? Expected sadly, British imports (regardless of how epic they are) never get the love they deserve on these lists.
But no Walking Dead? That midseason finale was EPIC!

  30. Stephanie on December 27th, 2013 9:19 pm

Thank you for putting Psych, The Musical on here! I know some people think you lost credibility because you didn’t put others on here, but you hit the awesomes! I also totally agree with Glee, The Quarterback. It was one of the best episodes Glee has put out in years.

  31. Laura on December 27th, 2013 9:40 pm

Um. Where is Game of Thrones:The Rains of Castamere?

  32. Tina on December 27th, 2013 10:25 pm

There is no point making a list of the Top 13 TV Episodes of 2013 if you haven’t even watched ALL the shows’ episodes shown in 2013.

  33. MJ on December 27th, 2013 11:25 pm

No Game of Thrones??? Especially with The Rains of Castamere? The BEST KEPT SECRET FOR TV HISTORY (in regards to people who read the books knowing full well what was coming and it was still a surprise for new fans). Shame… this list is incorrect until GoT has it’s due.

  34. jn on December 28th, 2013 2:05 am

Glad you included Raising Hope. It’s such a gem, and it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The musical episode was rerun tonight. Hilarious!!!

  35. echosei on December 28th, 2013 4:26 am

The “RAINS OF CASTAMERE” episode of Game of Thrones should be on the #1 spot and it didnt even make this list… YOU SHOULD WATCH IT.

  36. Shane on December 28th, 2013 6:31 am

Dude. The Good Wife “Hitting The Fan” was the greatest hour of netowrk TV I’ve seen in years.

Also.. GoT “The Rains of Castamere”

  37. Mairyn on December 28th, 2013 10:38 am

I used to watch Bones, but the show has been going downhill for the last 2-3 years. I tuned in to watch the wedding episode and it was nothing special.
Meanwhile, how did Hershel’s death on The Walking Dead not make the list?! That was brutal.
Or the season finale of Orange is The New Black?

  38. Alice on December 28th, 2013 3:57 pm

So glad Fringe is on there. one of the best shows of all time <3 miss it so much
