Top 15 Shows and Episodes of 2018

December 27, 2018 by

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a lot of TV. A lot. Close to 500 scripted shows, in fact. That’s made these “end of year” lists absolutely brutal.

So here are a few caveats:

1) This is a hybrid list of the best episodes and shows I watched this year. My rules were I could only have one overlap with show and episode (which also happens to be my personal pick for best show/episode of the year) and I couldn’t pick a show if I hadn’t finished every episode that aired in 2018. (That also means shows I really have been enjoying like KIDDING and ESCAPE FROM DANNEMORA aren’t on the list. There just are not enough hours in the day.)

2) Given the sheer amount of TV, it’s quite possible/probable your favorite isn’t represented here. I’m sorry! But feel free to let me know what particularly excited you this year in the comments.

That being said, here is the list (in alphabetical order)…

SUPERSTORE

With the aforementioned problem of having so many shows on, often television (even the quality programming) can feel like work. But out of all of the hundred-plus shows I watch, there is no show right now that brings me more joy than SUPERSTORE.

The comedy has been as funny as ever, but also dove back into some longer-arcing serious topics in 2018: Dina’s surrogacy, Amy’s unplanned pregnancy, revisiting the lack of workers’ rights, and Mateo’s undocumented status.

And after three seasons of will they/won’t they, Amy and Jonah got together in outrageously dramatic fashion. (An impromptu hookup in the photo lab that was broadcast to Cloud 9 stores all over the world was probably not the way anyone bet it would happen.) What’s been refreshing in season 4 has been that even though the duo are together (secretly at first, but now out in the open), nothing has really changed. They’re still friends, they still mess with each other, but now they’re occasionally a little more open to showing each other how much they care.

It’s honestly such a joy to spend time with the Cloud 9 gang every week. (Photo credit: Eddy Chen/NBC)
