The Rookie Captain Andersen Dies

THE ROOKIE – ABC’s “The Rookie” stars Titus Makin as Jackson West, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Afton Williamson as Talia Bishop, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Mercedes Mason as Zoe Andersen, and Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey. (ABC/Ed Herrera)

[This post contains spoilers for the Tuesday, March 19 episode of THE ROOKIE.]

THE ROOKIE has never sugar-coated the life its LAPD officers are living, and on the Tuesday, March 19 episode, the characters lost one of their own.

After a hit was put out on Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Captain Andersen (Mercedes Mason)—who had believed in Nolan’s unconventional job route—volunteered to ride with him. Though the hit was called off, the word didn’t get out in time, and Nolan and Andersen were ambushed.

At first, it looked like the duo might be able to escape unscathed after she broke her own thumb to escape from being confined to a chair that was pushed underwater. And though she was able to take out multiple suspects, Andersen was ultimately shot in the neck and bled out.

With Mason’s time on the show coming to an end, the series’ social media account posted a video of a farewell to the actress, complete with Fillion’s goodbye speech and Mason thanking the fans.

Will you miss Mason on THE ROOKIE?

I have to be honest and say that I only watched the show because I am a huge fan of Nathan Fillion. I’ve watched him since One Life to Live. However, I have become very fond of this cast, and I was crushed when I saw that Mercedes’ character(Capt.) was killed off. We will miss her, but I know I will keep watching. I think the role of rookie is a fitting follow-up to the Castle role. It’s almost as if there was a progression of his profession from P.I. because everyone who watched Castle knows how curious and smart, he was. Thank you all for continuing to entertain us.

How could they kill off Captain Andersen??? She was an amazing femal role model!!! A strong female in a command position. I’m sure they will replace her with either some stereotypical man (promotion for Grey?) or some NY type over the top female character that no one likes and doesn’t fit with the team. Stupid stupid mistake guys. Nathan Fillion you are an Executive Producer- I expected better.

I am so distraught over the captain’s demise. She was awesome! Not sure how I will get over the loss of such a great role model. She kicked butt, made the officers toe the line but still showed compassion. The rookie owes her a great debt for saving his life.

Great show, and a fine actress, but she was never a good fit for the captain, for some reason it is hard to put one’s finger on — just awkward. She never felt like a real police captain — check out Captain Gates on Castle for a better portrayal. (passing note: the swimming pool scene was terrific.)

I didn’t see that coming , I really enjoy the show , Although I wish that Firefly would come back on..I have had to accept that aint gonna happen. I am going to miss the CaptainL,and I hope she has something on the Burner that works out for her
.I am often reminded of a little Chat I had With Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr.Riker) a few years back when I asked him why he never got his own Star Ship , and he looked me right in the eye and said “BAD WRITING” NUFF SAID!
