10 Favorite Pilots of the 2010s

December 23, 2019 by

Pilots…are tough. Shows have to introduce a world, characters, and, in theory, set up where the show will go in the first season. But when they’re done correctly? Boy, they can be magic.

As the decade comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite pilots over the past ten years…*

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (March 1, 2015)

If I had to point to a single favorite pilot of the decade, it was probably this one. The Fox comedy was, in theory, about the last human on Earth, and the pilot was the only episode that really showcased the highs and lows of that experience. Will Forte (who also wrote the episode) was stunning as Phil Miller, carrying the episode single-handedly as Phil was desperate to find anyone else who might be alive. (He even created “friends” out of balls to ease his loneliness.) Phil stumbled upon another survivor by the end of the pilot—and the series was great—but that first episode truly was something special.

*We’re also doing a list of favorite episodes over the decade. As a note, one of the (self-imposed) restrictions was nothing that no show that made this list could make the other so there wouldn’t be a huge amount of double-ups. (It also served as a tie-breaker for some shows, whose pilots could have made this list, but ended up with a different episode in that one instead.)

Which pilots were your favorite this decade?
