Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

AMERICAN IDOL: I felt awful for the husband of the final contestant. He wasn’t the very best singer ever, but he had been his family’s rock and then the judges basically told him he needed to keep staying in the background so his wife could shine. I hope their family survives this ordeal. (Ditto Margie Mays and Jonny West.)

Standouts for me in the second episode? Cyniah Elise, Julia Gargano, and Jovin Webb. A number of good singers in the two-hour block.

THE SIMPSONS: Poor Frink was so sad. It made sense Lisa would profile him, but, man, it’s hard when some of the much more fringe characters get the spotlight, because rarely are their lives incredible/fulfilled. At least he has a will they/won’t they romance going for him.

SUPERGIRL: The device of going back in time was fun (though stake-free, because they had just reset the timeline), but I wish they had been able to explore more of the earlier eras of the show. Far and away the best scene of the episode was Kara, Alex, and J’onn together at the end, acknowledging their bond throughout everything.

ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST: Maggie’s breakdown broke my heart. I’m loving this show, despite the occasional pain.

THE ROOKIE: Knowing Lucy would survive did nothing to make this episode less tense. It makes sense she couldn’t full-on save herself, but I love that a) she fought at every given moment and b) it was her brains/instinct (AKA taking off her ring so it would alert people she had been in the area) that ultimately led to her being saved.

The show hasn’t really backed down from showcasing trauma before, so I’m really hopeful they handle the aftermath of this well. Lucy should be going through a lot post-escape, as should her colleagues who thought they were going to lose their friend.
