When CHICAGO FIRE (eventually) returns for its ninth season, it’ll be down a cast member: Annie Ilonzeh will be exiting the series, a source confirms. (Reps for the show declined to comment.)

The now-season finale of FIRE concluded with Ilonzeh’s Foster applying to go to medical school at Northwestern University. Brett (Kara Killmer), Foster’s partner, showed up to support her, but the future of Foster with Firehouse 51 was unclear. (It’s not yet clear whether Ilonzeh will return to FIRE for a proper wrap-up episode.)

After the episode aired, CHICAGO FIRE boss Derek Haas would only tease “stay tuned” about Foster’s future on the show, but he had previously acknowledged her yearning for her old life was genuine. “That will be a spark that has been building since she saw photos of her med school peers after the turn of the year,” he previewed earlier in the month. “The road not taken…”

Ilonzeh joined the series at the start of season 7, as a replacement partner for Brett after the exit of Monica Raymund’s Dawson. She previously had arcs on a number of shows, including ARROW, PERSON OF INTEREST, and EMPIRE.

(Update: Haas confirmed the exit on social media, noting he hoped she’d be back on FIRE “before it’s all said and done.”)
