THE VOICE, PRODIGAL SON, and SONGLAND

PRODIGAL SON: L-R: Guest star Dermot Mulroney and Halston Sage in the “Like Father…” season fin theale episode of PRODIGAL SON airin theg Monday, April 27 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. © 2020 FOX MEDIA LLC. Cr: David Giesbrecht/FOX.

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

THE VOICE: Admittedly, I don’t often watch these recap specials, but it was a fun distraction. (Though I am actually surprised the behind-the-scenes footage didn’t include the coaches having more fun with Nick’s notebook.)

PRODIGAL SON: In the moments leading up to the final sequence, when Malcolm wouldn’t kill Nicholas, I had the looming dread (in a good way, as weird as that sounds) that Ainsley was going to take matters in her own hands. (I expected her to knock him over the head versus…that. This was definitely a whole lot further.) And as soon as Martin called his son, I got chills with the realization they had set us up to expect the “my boy”—which had arguably been the most recognized line from the show—when, really, it was about to be “my girl” and things were going to fundamentally shift.

The best twists almost always aren’t the ones that totally blindside you; they’re the ones you feel coming at the very last possible second and then can’t believe you didn’t see coming so much earlier. They’re earned. And, man, I loved the finale. I know the show hasn’t officially been renewed—I can’t imagine it not coming back, whenever production is able to resume—but right now it’s the show I’m most excited to see what comes next. [For what comes next on PRODIGAL SON, here’s what the EPs had to say.]

SONGLAND: I think this was the first time this season I had truly no clue what song would win. “Sway” was obvious, and even though I personally preferred another song, it was clear “Champagne Night” was the right song in the premiere. This one? It really felt like H.E.R. could have picked any of them.
