When LUCIFER eventually returns for the second half of its fifth season, one long-gestating episode is on the horizon: a musical hour.

“I’ll say it’s been a slow build, a slow burn,” co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich said during the show’s DC FanDome panel. “In my heart, it began to blossom after the Vegas episode when Tom [Ellis] and Aimee [Garcia] did ‘Luck Be A Lady.’ I remember coming into rehearsal for that and crying, because it was such a dream come true and it was so exciting. And if there’s any show that you could actually do a musical on, it’s this one.”

“It was my personal mission to do a musical episode, without actually having to do it, because it’s really hard and exhausting,” co-showrunner Joe Henderson joked. “So I love that Ildy wanted to do it and I could be part of it, but not actually have to do all the hard work.”

An essential part of the process—after convincing the powers that be—was actually finding a logical reason for the episode to occur.

“We were always trying to find the reason,” Henderson said. “Part of it is in these musical episodes, you’ve got to have the story-based reason that everyone breaks into song. Our show has people breaking into song all the time, but it’s because they’re at [the club] Lux or because of reasons like that. So, what element can we introduce that is organic to our story that allows all of our cast to burst into song? And when we found that..that’s when it came together.”

However, wanting to make a musical episode and actually making one are two entirely different beasts.

“I mean, we almost broke production; we almost broke our show,” Modrovich admitted. “We had to create a completely separate schedule, just to track all the rehearsals for the dance, rehearsals for the music, and all the recording sessions for the music. We had to track every single thing just to coordinate it and I think we almost exploded our show; we really did.”

But, of course, there was fun to be had. The writers spoke with every actor to gauge how comfortable they were with singing and/or dancing in the episode.

“It was fun to watch people decide where their their comfort level was,” Henderson said. “We wanted to empower them: Listen, as much or as little as you want, but this is your opportunity to do this, if you want to.”

The DC FanDome panel included a clip from the episode, as the cast performed a highly choreographed group number to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” at a crime scene.

“Even in [that], which was so choreographed—it had to be—there were still moments of improvisation,” Modrovich shared. “I think we can say it’s Lauren [German, who surprised us], a moment between Lauren and Tom.”

Director Sherwin Shilati, who moderated the conversation, pointed to the final duet as a highlight for him. “I wanted that one to have a special standalone quality, but not for the reasons the audience might think,” Shilati teased. “I’m pretty confident that we built the momentum up to get to that point in the episode.”

And the panel ended with a special treat: The season 4 blooper reel!
