CHICAGO P.D.: Marina Squerciati Breaks Down the Loaded Burgess-Upton Premiere Scene

As CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) was recovering after her kidnapping and attack, she was unaware of what Voight (Jason Beghe) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) had tracked down—and killed—the man responsible for her trauma.

When Upton checked on Burgess in the season premiere, Kim asked whether they had found Roy. After a long pause, Upton said they hadn’t. The duo shared a loaded look.

But despite the guilt Upton was experiencing, Burgess hasn’t pieced together the truth, Squerciati says. “I have heard that from other people about that look,” she admits. “It’s like any art—once it leaves your house or our studio, people get to interpret it as they want.”

That being said, “I didn’t see the look that way at all,” she says. “I saw the look is [Burgess’] guard is down Ruzek and Makayla are out of the room. [She’s thinking,] ‘My God, you haven’t found him. This is freaking terrifying to me.’ That’s this moment [where] the floor drops out.”

But Squerciati has a theory as to why some viewers read more into it. “I think it’s because everybody knows that she killed Roy that people are putting that on the look,” she says. “And if I know, my goodness, I’m the best cop ever.”
