THE SIMPSONS, SUPERMARKET SWEEP, THE ROOKIE

THE ROOKIE – “Five Minutes” – Officer Nolan and Officer Chen’s run-in with an infamous thief tips them off to a potentially big heist surrounding the Getty’s big gala event. Meanwhile, Nolan works up the courage to ask Bailey out on date on an all-new episode of “The Rookie,” SUNDAY, OCT. 3 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC. (ABC/Raymond Liu)

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

THE SIMPSONS: What a bittersweet episode? Not bad, but more cynical than the show, frequently is. Yes, Grandpa restored Marge’s faith in humans by sending her the money she was owed by a scammer, but, uh, Grandpa was scammed out of $10k and the result was, well, it’s a larger scheme that employs other people, but it’s kind of a win for the family because they got $500 worth of free appetizers via stolen gift cards.

CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNE: The first game was a lot more even (and I was really impressed with Vanilla Ice/Rob, even if he didn’t win), but the second was a lot more lopsided. But I’m also glad it wasn’t an hour where one contestant barely participated at all, like it was in the premiere.

THE GREAT NORTH: Ham as a punk rocker was absolutely precious. And it’s true: it is pretty badass to change the lyrics on your band at the last second. Also, Judy as a deranged ballerina is going to haunt me.

BOB’S BURGERS: Is it bad I want to try Bob and Linda’s horrifying pickled veggies? I don’t really trust their process, but…it was a smart way to handle the imperfect food.

SUPERMARKET SWEEP: Okay, the clues for the first sweep were SO hard?? The spice was difficult and I had no clue about Luna. (Like, in hindsight, sure, it makes sense, when you think moon goddess, but yikes! Frequently there’s even a better clue about the product itself and this just felt like..chaos.)

FAMILY GUY: Honestly, good for the show for highlighting Muddy Waters instead of Elvis. And the “Surfin’ Bird” kicker to the episode was great.

THE ROOKIE: Angela and Wesley speculating and debating about a case when they should have been resting—as Baby Jackson was sleeping–was perfect and a fun way to keep them in the episode.

While I understand Harper’s reluctance about having an acquitted murder suspect as her trainee, I’m glad Thorsen was able to push back and prove himself. I really hope he works out.

Claire was a very fun criminal of the week—not that I wanted Nolan and Lucy to mess up, but I wouldn’t have minded if she had gotten off on a technicality and returned. But given her history of nothing sticking, I wonder if another trick is up the writers’ sleeve down the line.
