Dr. Asher (Jessy Schram) officially returns to the ED on the Wednesday, April 6 episode of CHICAGO MED, and, well, things get off to a bumpy start. (And she’ll be sticking around: Schram is a new series regular on the NBC medical drama.)

After publicly struggling with addiction issues—and a complicated relationship with Will (Nick Gehlfuss), “she brings, of course, along a history that everybody knows about,” CHICAGO MED co-showrunner Diane Frolov told reporters in the video below during One Chicago Day. “She has to get past that history in her relationships with people. We’ll particularly see a lot of conflict with Archer, who has his own reasons for—I would say—a kind of prejudice against her because of her past.”

Things are equally complex with one-time flame Will. “He has always seen her as someone who needs help, who’s a fragile flower,” co-showrunner Andrew Schneider acknowledged. “He’s going to have to overcome his prejudice toward her, because she’s a woman who is now very strong. And who is determined to overcome her past in her new position. She has a lot of support from Ms. Goodwin.”
