Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

AMERICAN IDOL: I really wish they had only had the bottom 10 perform. Trying to go through 20 performances while half of them were singing for their lives made it a very busy two hours, but also meant the people who needed it didn’t really get the spotlight they deserved? But, for the most part, a really, really solid top 14. I’m interested to see where the competition goes now.

AMERICAN SONG CONTEST: Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg remain such a fun pairing.

It’s hard to get a feel for this show, because it feels like they‘re still learning it every week. I’m glad we didn’t have to watch the finalists get rejected if they didn’t make the final three slots from last week, but it feels like they still haven’t found a great happy medium for the ranking reveal. For instance, the last two weeks a single act has been number 1 for the bulk of the show, and then lost it in the final moments. Would the rankings be the same if people voted blindly? (Like, if a song you hate is leading, would a judge bump up their vote for a song they like in the final batch in the hopes of dethroning it versus just voting on the song’s merit? I don’t know. It kind of feels like there’s a way bigger advantage to going late and being good versus early and being great.)

But I hope they can figure out some kind of balance as they move to the next round.
