MASTERCHEF and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Choreographer Mandy Moore (L) and contestants at the Los Angeles auditions for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE airing Wednesday, June 8 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2022 Fox Media LLC. CR: Adam Rose/FOX

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

MASTERCHEF: Okay, Fred and Bri’s friendship is so cute and I’m so glad they both made it through. They clearly have success—both individually and together—outside of the show, but it could be fun to see them actually move through the competition together.

But, also, Gordon spitting out a contestant’s food was so hard to watch. It wasn’t even a case of food being dangerous/undercooked, he just didn’t like it! (Though…fish and fruit on pasta…not my ideal choice of a dish, either.)

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Look, I’m not going to sugar coat it: The episode was awkward. Distilling the callbacks to a single day—and airing it as a single episode—was a disservice to the dancers and the show. And not even a two-hour episode! It felt like the entire episode was a montage, which meant out of all those dancers, only a few really got air time…and several of those didn’t even make it to the top 24. There’s a very real chance members of the top 12 were barely visible this hour.

And that’s another issue—we still don’t know the Top 12. In another season, I’d roll my eyes a bit and be like, well, that’s reality TV for you. Because of course they made it a cliffhanger. (And, of course, there was no freaking time to get to it in this episode.) But, uh, the show is now down a judge, thanks to Matthew Morrison’s alleged misconduct toward a contestant. And given he was a part of this decision, I assume he’ll be a part of next week’s show (via the pretaped segments where they reveal the top dancers), presumably also with whomever they end up getting to replace him in present-day stuff with the top 12 actually performing? Mess, mess, mess.

That being said, I’m bummed we lost Maci, Decoy and Zyiasia so soon. Juicy and Beau’s partnered dance was so much fun. And I think Essence may be my early favorite. I just really hope the dancers are given the room to really perform as we move on and it’s not scrunched into these condensed showcases.
