MASTERCHEF and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: L to R: Judge Leah Remini, host Cat Deeley, judges JoJo Siwa and Stephen “tWitch” Boss at the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE 300th EPISODE CELEBRATION. CR: Michael Becker/PictureGroup for FOX. ©2022 FOX MEDIA, LLC.

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

MASTERCHEF: Oh, God, you knew things weren’t going to go well for Stephen when he realized fairly early he hadn’t set his dessert. It’s kind of crazy he didn’t try to more seriously pivot…to be clear, I don’t know how, but you’d think he could do something?

But, honestly, this was a brilliant challenge. If a dish eliminated you, I could see it going one of two ways: You never want to look at it again or you practice that until you never will struggle with it under any circumstance. And, clearly, we saw a bit of both of those things with the top 20. Not to mention, the stress of possibly going home first? Yeah, they’re lucky only a few of the dishes were absolute disasters.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Honestly, I don’t even know what to make of the episode. It was the 300th episode, but outside of pre-taped celebrity shout outs, the show barely acknowledged its history. (Which is especially bittersweet given it’s highly unlikely they’ll make it to 400—it took them almost a decade to get from 200 to 300.) With tWitch on the judging panel, why not play 10 seconds of his audition? A memorable dance number? Something? That would have been the bare minimum. Also, they had time to do the elimination fake out—why not just be upfront and say, okay, no one is going home, let’s honor the show for two minutes instead? Sigh.

And then there’s the awkwardness of Matthew Morrison’s exit. He was there in the top 12 reveal, but (clearly) not there for the performances. I’m sure there’s a million legal reasons why they couldn’t get into things on the show, but just trying to ignore things and be like, “Here’s a new judge, forget what you saw the first few weeks!!!”…awkward. And depressing.

Oh, and there was dancing. It’s depressing it almost felt like an afterthought, but we got nothing from the rehearsals and only got brief shots of the choreographers. There were good numbers! (Early favorites of the duos: Jordan and Waverly, Alexis and Keaton, plus Anna and Beau…though I loved that former SYTYCDer Alan choreographed Carter and Ralyn.) But so much of the reaction to the dances felt superficial, so it was hard to know whether this is what the judging panel is going to be like, or if they’ll have more time to actually dig into things when they’re not sharing half their time with the reveal of who is even still with the show.
