The NEW AMSTERDAM Team Previews a ‘Healing Journey’ in Season 5

As NEW AMSTERDAM’s final season kicks off, both Max (Ryan Eggold) and the series are in an unfamiliar place: Trying to figure out life in a post-Helen (Freema Agyeman) world.

In the season 4 finale, Max and Helen were set to tie the knot, with the latter flying back to New York for an impromptu, romantic, rooftop wedding. But as Max was at the altar, he got a call from Helen, who told him simply, “I can’t.” (Agyeman, for her part, announced her exit from the medical drama over the summer, saying in part, “[Helen] has meant so much to me, but the time has come for me to hang up her white coat, as I officially share the news that I will not be returning for the final season of NEW AMSTERDAM.”)

Now, in the season 5 premiere, Max is back at New Amsterdam, trying to sort out his life in the aftermath of the non-wedding. “David [Schulner] wrote a really amazing episode 1, and we open with right there, [with] this sort of devastation of that moment,” Eggold previews in the video below. “Max’s friends, Reynolds, Iggy, Bloom, Wilder…everybody [is] rallying around him, [as they] are all dealing with their own sort of life-changing events that happened at the end of season 4.”

As the friends and colleagues are figuring out what the heck the next steps are in their lives, “there’s this amazing sort of coming together that is the beginning of, I think, a healing journey,” Eggold acknowledges. “The theme for season 5 is healing, and so I think that’s where we begin.”

But for as bittersweet as things can feel when the final batch of episode kicks off, “it’s not going to be a sad season,” Schulner reassures. “It’s not going to be a wallowing season.”
