THE SIMPSONS, THE EQUALIZER, THE ROOKIE

THE SIMPSONS: When the Boy Explorers become co-ed, Bart and Lisa vow to “out scout” each other at the annual jamboree in the all-new “Lisa the Boy Scout” episode of THE SIMPSONS airing Sunday, October 9 (8:00-8:31 PM ET/PT) on FOX. THE SIMPSONS © 2022 by 20th Television.

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

THE SIMPSONS: Oh my goodness, I loved this episode. Fox did a good job of hiding what this episode was about (teasing the “normal” element of the show, which we only got a couple of scenes of), and I had actually wondered how they would make it feel unique…THE SIMPSONS has done scouts-related episodes before.

And, well, surprise! Instead we got a spiritual sequel to “22 Short Films About Springfield.” The hackers releasing “deleted” scenes from the franchise was a fantastic premise. It was wildly funny and I didn’t want to tear my eyes from the screen. Even so, I still feel like I need to rewatch it a few times to catch all of the jokes. (Early favorite segments were Bart telling the family how and what to predict from the future, the “we only got as far as funny episode titles” bit, and Eddie being Ralph’s father.)

THE EQUALIZER: Uh, Robyn jumping out of the building was freaking insane. Forever a badass.

But in all seriousness, I’m so glad the show is exploring how much Robyn’s work is messing with the family. It’s not saying she should stop—clearly, the world needs her—but the family now knows too much to be entirely left in the dark, even if she thinks she’s protecting them. And Vi channeling her trauma through art and going to a shooting range, while Delilah asked to be trained…good. I’m glad they’re giving this the story real estate it deserves, including Robyn’s own nightmare.

THE GREAT NORTH: I hope we get a number of Fall Frenzy Dance episodes during the run of the show, because what delightful mayhem. Beef winding up with too many dates because he couldn’t say no/isn’t used to female attention would be hard to pull off with most TV characters, but it felt genuinely funny and sweet here. (And Judy torturing Alanis with her storytelling methods was hilarious.)

CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNE: This was a great episode, both in terms of winnings and also the contestants having fun with each other/being funny. (Not a shock with this lineup.) But it also felt like the show stepped up to bring the humor, too, like when they had Tig Notaro and Thomas Lennon’s names…and then the final puzzle was Nick Nolte, rather than Nikki Glaser. (Though it was funny Glaser solved the puzzles.)

But, as someone who is generally very good at this game (as in I solve the puzzles 90-95% of the time before the contestants), those final round puzzles were hard…and yet Glaser got “Hilarious Monologue” and Lennon got “Wondering Why?” so fast. Major props to them both, because they also each scored $100k for their respective charities.

BOB’S BURGERS: This was a very fun episode, as the family tried to reassure Louise about her future because of a school project. (Of course Bob had her saving cowkind, which both served to make her a worldwide savior and allow the family to reopen the business.)

FAMILY GUY: …yeah, I absolutely buy Lois would enjoy Joe’s attention way, way, way too much.

THE ROOKIE: Okay, when Alexi Hawley told me that the new rookie would be a challenge for Nolan, I expected it to be because of police reform or even the age difference. I, um, did not expect her to sage the car.

But it was also good to see Nolan struggle in a leadership role and explain to her why she couldn’t just go off her gut; he’s entirely right that it would be a slippery slope to discrimination, which is already a major issue. Removing any probable cause would make things out of control.

And, oy, Rosalind can never be low-key. But this escalated earlier in the season than I expected, which is…both good and bad. Hopefully, for the characters’ sake, they’ll be able to contain her ASAP.
