CHICAGO P.D.’s Patrick John Flueger Previews the 24-Like ‘Blood Bleeds Blue’: ‘It Just Never Lets Up’
October 1, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
In the aftermath of CHICAGO P.D.’s Detective Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena) getting shot, Intelligence goes on a frantic hunt to find the person who shot her on the Wednesday, October 2 episode, “Blood Bleeds Blue”–and, hopefully, prevent further tragedy.
“It’s like an episode of 24…it’s all real-time,” Patrick John Flueger, who plays Officer Adam Ruzek, tells Give Me My Remote. “It just picks up right where we left off—[it] is off to the races, right off of the bat. And, man, I’m proud of this episode.”
“I was proud of episode 1; I thought Jason Beghe murdered that show,” he continues. “I just thought it was fantastic. And Sarah [Bues] coming in as Chapman…I’m very, very proud of these first couple episodes that we got coming out of the gate. I feel like we’re delivering for the audience this season. I’m very excited for everybody to see everything. But it’s pretty cool to have [episode 2] be this real-time, off to the races [hour]; it just never lets up.”
Ruzek was in a particularly vulnerable spot when we last saw him: Not only was his safety in jeopardy since he was with Martel when she was ambushed, but the duo had known each other since their police academy days. “[‘Blood Bleeds Blue’ is] pretty emotional and pretty heavy hitting the entire time,” Flueger says.
“I don’t know that he’s really been in this situation before—they’re in dangerous situations all of the time,” he continues, before chuckling at Ruzek’s recent brushes with death. “I mean, he’s been shot several times, which is kind of funny when I think about it as a whole. He’s been shot a bunch. But…it’s always worked out, you know? And I think this is one of the first times it [didn’t] work out.”
With Martel being ambushed in front of him, “it takes that invulnerability and it puts it into perspective,” Flueger acknowledges. “And he realizes we don’t all get to go home all the time. And I think that that’s a shocker for him.”
By Ruzek’s side through the hour is patrol officer Kiana Cook (new series regular Toya Turner). “Toya has got strength coming out of her pores,” Flueger gushes. “She’s an incredibly confident person in her real life and plays Cook with a lot of confidence, a lot of poise. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in crime because for her to be so strong and in control [led to a different dynamic in the aftermath of the attack]. And still emotional—don’t get me wrong, still feeling everything. But she didn’t know Martel. So maybe her emotional investment is a little less than mine, I suppose, but it’s still a cop that was [shot].”
“But the way that she came in with her strength allowed me to be in my feelings,” Flueger says with laughs. “She kind of owned that strong space, so I could kind of be a little more frantic and all over the place. And [Ruzek is] really just trying to get a hold of the situation.”
As grim as things are for Ruzek currently, there is brightness around the corner: CHICAGO P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan previously told GMMR that the Burzek—AKA Ruzek and Burgess (Marina Squerciati)—wedding would be occurring in 2025.
“I was just telling [one of our CHICAGO P.D. publicists] I hope that we can bring back some folks,” Flueger shares of his hopes for the couple’s big day. “Maybe [Jon Seda’s] Antonio shows up. Maybe [Tracy Spiridakos’] Upton and [Jesse Lee Soffer’s] Halstead show up. I mean, we don’t know where Halstead is—currently, he’s not Halstead…[Soffer]’s on FBI[: INTERNATIONAL] now; maybe he comes back as that character. But I think that would be fun: If we could have a little bit of a reunion here and there. Have some characters come back that we haven’t seen for a while.”
The actor does have one question about his character’s big day: “I don’t know how they work a wedding into a show,” he admits. “Only because we’re kind of a ‘case of the week’ show. We’ll see. Gwen’s pretty talented, though, so I believe she’ll make it work.”
There is still one thing up in the air for the Burzek family: If Adam will officially adopt his daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams). “If he hasn’t already done off-screen, I think he’d be happy to do that,” Flueger says. “Only because, legally, it makes things a lot easier [when it comes to] going to the doctor and stuff like that. But I don’t think he has any questions about his position in her world anymore. I think that that was all resolved [for Adam] a few seasons back.”
