“Elsbeth Flips The Bird” – Elsbeth investigates the death of a devious kitchen staffer after he causes havoc in New York’s hottest restaurant and enrages one of America’s most revered chefs (Pamela Adlon), on the CBS original series ELSBETH, Thursday, Nov. 14 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)* Pictured (L-R): Lauren Benanti as Nadine Clay, Pamela Adlon as Chef Z, and Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. Though he’s clear he loves all of the episodes from the CBS series, the Thursday, November 14 episode of ELSBETH, “Elsbeth Flips the Bird,” is a little bit extra special for showrunner Jonathan Tolins.

“I am particularly thrilled with episode 5, with my old friend Pamela Adlon as one of New York’s top chefs,” he tells Give Me My Remote. “I think fans of hers will be very surprised at her performance. She’s pretty spectacular.”

The hour also marks the return of Laura Benanti as supermodel Nadine, whom Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) met in the season 1 finale.

“We love keeping people from our universe alive,” Tolins notes.”Eagle-eyed viewers may notice in episode 2×01, that there is a park bench with an ad for Joann Lenox Realty with a picture of Jane Krakowski. And we brought back Dr. Yablonsky [in the season premiere], played by the great Daniel Davis, because we felt, well, he’s someone who would have a subscription to the opera, and so make him a witness in this story.”

“We do like to bring back characters that we’ve already established,” he continues. “And what’s really fun about it is that they were not created for that purpose, so it’s very organic when we think, ‘Oh, you know who would make sense to use here?’”

The series also brought back a face from Elsbeth’s own past early in season 2 when Christian Borle’s Carter Schmidt delivered an ominous warning about a divorce they once handled. Elsbeth was confused—until she saw the client was in the midst of another divorce.

When the storyline comes back, its impact won’t just be on Elsbeth. “Some of the things that come back from Elsbeth’s past are going to be a bit of a speed bump in [the Kaya and Elsbeth] relationship, too, because Kaya is going to learn things about her new friend that are difficult to process,” Tolins teases. “And, also, Elsbeth is going to need Kaya’s help to try to make things right.”

ELSBETH, Thursdays, 10/9c, CBS
