ELSBETH Judge Crawford

“One Angry Woman” – Elsbeth finally makes it as a true New Yorker when she is summoned to jury duty and lands on a murder trial where she faces off with the unusually difficult Judge Milton Crawford (Michael Emerson) who will prove a formidable adversary, on the CBS original series ELSBETH, Thursday, Dec. 12 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)* Pictured (L-R): Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni and Michael Emerson as Judge Milton Crawford Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) was able to utilize her time in jury duty to save an innocent woman on the Thursday, December 12 episode of ELSBETH…but she wasn’t able to nab her bad guy quite yet.

With Delia (Meredith Holman) on trial for murdering her neighbor/lover, Andrew—who was actually killed by Judge Milton Crawford (Michael Emerson), who was presiding over the trial—the deck seemed stacked against her. But after Elsbeth was able to get her way from the alternate to the jury pool, she was able to convince her fellow jurors there was reasonable doubt about the evidence that had been presented.

After the jury returned a not guilty verdict, Crawford confronted Elsbeth as they were leaving the courthouse.

“Congratulations, Ms. Tascioni, “ the judge said. “I hope you know what you were doing in there. Or is this just another example of Elsbeth Tascioni helping the unsavory to evade justice?”

At Elsbeth’s confusion, Crawford admitted he’d done research on her and discovered she had an “interesting” list of clients back in Chicago.

“I get it, corrupt governors need lawyers,” he said. “Billionaire team owners, too.”

Elsbeth insisted that was another life, and with her new job with the NYPD, enacting the consent decree meant that she thought “justice means no one should be above the law.”

Crawford, however, was dismissive, calling Andrew a “perverted disco lover” and noted he didn’t get justice.

“You tried to railroad that poor woman,” Elsbeth replied. “What I can’t figure out is why.”

But once Crawford left, the wheels started turning in Elsbeth’s mind and it clicked: She verified with Delia what music was playing when she found Andrew’s body (disco), and that it hadn’t been mentioned during the trial.

However, with just a gut feeling and no real proof, “she’s really having to rely on her intuition—the evidence is not there and the facts have not revealed themselves,” Preston previews to Give Me My Remote via email of Elsbeth’s next steps. “What I can say, though, is that she’s not going to have to do this alone. Some of her powerful friends and colleagues are going to come in clutch to help uncover the truth.”

There was some good personal news for Elsbeth in the hour, though: Teddy (Ben Levi Ross) revealed his boyfriend was moving to Brooklyn, so he’ll be around more.

So how will Elsbeth balance her desire to be close with her son while also giving him his own space to make a life, at least part-time, in New York?

“There’s the tension in the room!” Preston says. “Parenting an adult child comes with lots of challenges, and our brilliant writers are digging deep into that dynamic. Elsbeth and Teddy are devoted, loving family to each other—and she definitely gets under his skin on some issues. She’s still learning to navigate boundaries and he’s trying not to be overly sensitive about everything…it’s a complex relationship like most mother/child relationships are.”

ELSBETH, Thursdays, 10/9c, CBS
