In January, wildfires ravaged Southern California, with thousands of structures destroyed or damaged and dozens of lives lost. Firefighters battled 17 separate fires—with assistance from firefighters from other states/countries—on the ground and by air for more than two weeks.

The tragedy also hit close to home for the Los Angeles-based CHICAGO FIRE writers’ room—and emphasized the importance of showcasing what first responders go through in their daily lives.

“When I was re-watching [the ONE CHICAGO crossover], I got really emotional seeing the moments where our firefighters were charging into danger,” CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Andrea Newman tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Just knowing that they’re putting their lives on the line for the people that they’re going down there to save. And it really just brought up all the amazing sights we’ve seen out here of firefighters on the front line. You know, I could see some from my house…[firefighters] on a ridge line, standing there, holding back fire…It’s incredible to me.”

“It’s really an honor to be able to write to that, and to portray these firefighters,” she continues. “The danger to themselves is always in the back of their mind and [their main thought is] about saving people. And…it’s a beautiful thing to be able to write to these amazing firefighters.”

The ONE CHICAGO universe also got involved to lend some support, too: CHICAGO FIRE’s Dermot Mulroney, CHICAGO MED’s S. Epatha Merkerson, and CHICAGO P.D.’s Jason Beghe participated in a PSA/air request for the Red Cross that aired during the franchise’s big crossover. Additionally, a couple of CHICAGO FIRE writers lost their homes and have active GoFundMes: Click here to donate to writers Nancy Kiu and Victor Teran. To support the Red Cross, click here.
