Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

GHOSTS: What a lovely, lovely surprise that Thor realized his quest for answers about why his old friends abandoned him nearly cost him a current friend and it wasn’t actually worth it. (Also, I’m both curious and never want to find out what happens when Pete fully disappears.) It feels like it might be a double-edged sword to know the betrayal/abandonment wasn’t intentional, but, man, them not knowing you were missing also sucks in its own way.

I mean, it got messy, but it’s sweet the ghosts were trying to help Bela/make sure she didn’t mess up her job helping Jay.

MATLOCK: Ow?! Just ow, MATLOCK writers.

It’s interesting how the show has always addressed age head-on, but this is the first time it felt…sad. We’ve seen Matty face how the world has changed during her lifetime. Heck, Matty has long used the misconceptions about her, due to her age, to her advantage. But this was the first real time we saw her contend with the reality she’s raising her grandson, who is still young. Everything might be fine now, but seeing how quickly things changed at the retirement home, and how many people couldn’t take care of themselves, kickstarted a different level of panic in Matty. Kathy Bates was so damn good, too, showcasing Matty’s uneasy fears about the future. She can plan her investigation and mission and have a thousand variables in case something goes wrong, but getting older/aging is something she really does have limited control over. (But I’m intrigued about Alfie’s father and what might come from that potential storyline.)

What’s interesting about the show previously using the “dramatic moments are actually a dream!” trope is I genuinely thought the discovery of the bugged pen was another nightmare Matty would wake up from. (It took until they cut to a whole other scene that I believed what we saw actually happened.) I know she has an entire team (okay, her family) at her disposal, but my goodness she’s brilliant at pivoting when she’s about to get caught and utilizing things to actually be helpful to her. I don’t want Julian to be bad—and I suspect he won’t be, at least by the scope of Matty’s mission—but I do fear what Matty might find when this forensic accounting comes in.

Sarah’s backstory—and Matty’s subsequent betrayal to protect the mission—also hurt. Like I said: Ow?!? (I mean, it was a great episode. But ow.)

(Please someone send me a gif of Matty saying “tuchus,” thank you very much. The internet needs to be good for something.)

ELSBETH: Well, uh, I’m not sure if Elsbeth’s way of telling Kaya what was going on was ethical, but it got the job done, I guess? And was it just me, or did Carter seem kind of proud/okay with how Elsbeth played Van Ness? But I also really loved how Wagner was not going to let Elsbeth give up, either.

Now, about that judge…

THE PITT: We got a whole wide range of absolutely messed up family dynamics: One caregiver (seemingly) abandoned her mom and another patient was desperately begging her mom to allow her to have an abortion. I felt sympathy and empathy for the caregiver who broke, but also for her mom. My sympathy was all for the teen girl whose body was being held hostage by her mother. (And I’m really worried about what’s going to happen in that bathroom.)

I’ve actually watched this episode twice and the storyline this episode that has gutted me the most, though, was Robby confirming that Nick was brain dead to his parents. We knew that was what was going on, but it was still such a powerful scene; it was also really well done of Robby and the series to show his parents the images of a healthy brain versus Nick’s brain. Nick’s parents weren’t doing well, but the mom’s breakdown when the family support specialist brought up Nick’s request to donate his organs was just heartbreaking.
