About Last Night…FBI: INTERNATIONAL, FBI: MOST WANTED, THE ROOKIE, and More

THE ROOKIE – “The Gala” – It’s Valentine’s Day, and Lieutenant Grey gives Tim and Lucy an unromantic assignment, while John and Celina track down a missing girl. Later, the team sharpens up for a charity gala where multiple relationships come to a head. TUESDAY, FEB. 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EST) on ABC. (Disney/Mike Taing)
ERIC WINTER, MELISSA O’NEIL
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
FBI: I appreciate that we got some backstory about OA, but I do wish this had been a more shared episode with Maggie, too. We just saw her have to sacrifice Ella, so surely she would have some more in-depth feelings beyond the resolution of the case sucking for the agents?
Okay, ISOBEL IS MARRIED?! While I understand her larger point to OA, that feels like a real extreme. If she said she was engaged, fine, I get how you hide that. Hiding a marriage—when you’re suddenly a stepmom and presumably one or both of you needed to move—feels like…you have something to hide. It’s relevant to a job like this if you suddenly have a bias or a trigger or a thing criminals can exploit. (I also don’t get what they’re doing with the team’s personal stories/romances this season, Scola excluded. Nothing feels remotely healthy, even for these characters.)
KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Not to overstep, but, man, that mother and daughter need therapy, both individually together. It’s very difficult to be in that kind of pressure cooker situation together, and I hope they’re able to really heal rather than stick their heads in the sand until something becomes an issue again.
ST. DENIS MEDICAL: Oh my God, the expression on Dr. Ron’s face when Dr. Bruce said racist jokes can be funny. David Alan Grier was brilliant. And, hey, I’m glad Alex tried to help an unhoused woman by setting her up in the VIP suite, but maybe next time she can close the window shade to make it less likely Joyce discovers her secret? (Alex is not good at lying, so it was funny to watch her flail.)
FBI: INTERNATIONAL: I really loved Smitty in this episode and how the team was with her, too. Raines knew something was wrong and gently pressed her to open up; Wes was also supportive, but also jokingly poked her when it was appropriate. The “what if”s of Smitty now knowing she was sabotaged has to suck, but I’m really glad she got justice for Emma. Eva-Jane Willis was just so good in the hour.
And JAEGER!! Jaeger!!! It’s so rare I get to be surprised by a guest appearance and my jaw dropped when she popped up in my screener. Absolutely delightful and a really great use of their history; it would be a natural call for Smitty to make.
Also, Wes yelling at the cop to protect his town? YES.

DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: Oh my God, mess. Look, Phillip spiraling because he thought Parvati was using his past against him was sad—it felt genuine to me, but I get you feel paranoid in a game like this—but it certainly set the stage for him and C.K. to really fight at the final game.
Also, my goodness, C.K.—how did you think you could cheat and get away with it? But then blowing up your alliance (fair, since she was going scorched earth, I guess)…if she somehow survives, I do not know who she teams up with or how she makes it out of next week’s elimination. Mess!!
(I did feel bad for Seychelle, but I also wonder how/why people sign up for shows like this if you’re petrified of heights…)
DOC: It’s absolutely crazy appendicitis could nearly be fatal for a person who can’t feel pain. In many ways, it made that final diagnosis even more scary, given how routine a procedure it could be.
It’s so funny a drink was how Amy realized she and Jake were together. It will be interesting to see how they are now, beyond this (maybe brief) reconnection, especially with her daughter now moving in.
THE IRRATIONAL: Oh my God, an ANIMAL BEHAVIORIST?! Alec’s reaction was hilarious. I was pretty confident going into the hour that the horse wouldn’t be taken out and I’m very glad I was correct about that. But how sad to learn horses experience PTSD?! Sigh. Now I want to hug a horse.
Terrifyingly brilliant that the horse was made into a weapon with a speaker utilizing a frequency only animals could hear, though.
I do love how Marisa and Cam are working their way into actually having a relationship, even if work made it complicated this week. His line about wanting them to have a conflict of interest in the future was very sweet; I want that for both of them.
FBI: MOST WANTED: I loved this episode. The nature of the show means that we know the criminals are supposed to be the worst of the worst, and maybe it’s twisted that I appreciate when the bad guy isn’t just cartoon-levels of villainy, but I almost always find it way more interesting when someone good does something desperate and it spirals.
And this…sucked. Bre was being abused, Jake was desperate to protect her. Should he have killed her foster parents/abusers? Of course not. But the desperation to protect someone he loved, who was being harmed, made sense.
I really loved how we also got real personal moments from the characters, too. Obviously, Ray had the concerning situation with his dad—and hopefully that surgery goes well—but the show also really, really, really wove in Hana’s history with adoption well. It makes total sense she’d be thinking about her own past and how the case impacted her. I so appreciate the writers gave us those moments of humanity because it truly elevates episodes.
(Also, the sequence on ice was gorgeous.)

THE ROOKIE: Before we get to the Chenford of it all, a few things: Absolutely loved seeing long-time fave Colton Dunn here. Grey’s “Turn In Your Ex” plan was hilarious and always going to be messy. I’m so, so, so hoping Wesley’s jealousy storyline is finally over and Wopez gets their own solid story. I’m not really sure what we’re supposed to be thinking with Bailey and Nolan; she was wrong and now she moved out. They just got married and I’m sure they’re not going to get divorced, but…I also don’t know how they come back from this.
I don’t know if this will be controversial, but I actually loved what we got from Tim and Lucy. Would it be nice if they could just sit down, talk everything out, and live happily ever after? Of course. But that’s also not who these people are and we, as the audience, saw their turmoil the morning after; they hid it from each other. (Which, also, props to Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter for playing those subtle moments of angst so well.) It’s hard to hide from their physical chemistry, but actually reuniting in a real way has to be terrifying for them. They saw the fallout of their relationship going wrong last time. (And for Lucy, she was blindsided by Tim breaking up with her.) If* they’re going to reunite, they need to do it right, they need to be solid enough so this is it, nothing will tear them apart.
But, for now, I’m excited to see what happens next as they’re very clear it was a one-time thing…how long will that last? Who will figure out what’s going on? What will push them to have a serious talk about them? I can’t wait.
*And as an audience member, I’m sure it’s when.
