THE ROOKIE’s Melissa O’Neil: Seth Continues to Push Lucy’s Buttons

THE ROOKIE’s Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) has been stuck in a difficult position with her new rookie, Seth (Patrick Keleher): He has a seemingly tragic backstory—including the fact he’s currently battling cancer—but his stories frequently contradict and something doesn’t seem to be adding up.

Despite the doubts, Seth goes undercover on the Tuesday, February 18 episode, “The Mickey,” for an important case.

“Everything that happens with Seth continues to kind of push her buttons,” O’Neil explains to Give Me My Remote in the video below. “We still don’t really know what the truth is, and that’s kind of the fun [with] everything that’s been going on. I think as an audience member, when you’re watching it, you really empathize with Lucy—even from the way they’re telling the story, people are able to be in Lucy’s shoes and go, ‘Is he lying? Like, he feels like he’s telling the truth, and he looks so sweet and innocent, but also why do I feel like you’re lying?’”

“That’s really fun to play, especially as a character who I think generally sees the best in people, and wants to lean into that,” she continues. “I think she’s very conflicted inside of herself when navigating that.”

The one person Lucy has confided in about her doubts? Tim (Eric Winter)…something that continues even after their recent Valentine’s Day encounter. 

“I also love that of all the people that she could confide in, she goes to Bradford despite their relational dynamic in this moment,” O’Neil says. “I think that what that helps to underline is how much more there is to their connection—outside of their relationship, outside of their romance that has kind of gone astray at the moment. Ultimately, as coworkers, she continues to deeply respect his opinion and his insight and that there’s a lot of value in their connection, and they’re staying connected, even if romantically they’re doing something else at the time.” 

“She’s not deterred…because the origin of their relationship is the dynamic that they had as mentor and mentee,” she continues. “And there was a lot of value there. She respects him a lot.”
