Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
CHICAGO MED: I know it can’t happen regularly, but Dean high was so funny. And, shockingly, insightful? (Though I can’t believe he saved the day, haha.)
Lenox and Frost were really good together, too. I do hope the writers utilize them together more in the future. (And I’m very glad she got the proof that the father was an abusive monster, even if it technically may have overreached with testing.)
On the one hand, I’m really glad Ripley got some guidance and realized he really needed to pull himself together; it’s clear Hannah was his priority. But now that she’s pulled away, I really hope he doesn’t use that as an excuse to go spiral again.
WILD CARDS: I missed Max and Ellis working together in their normal capacity, but this was still fun. I love how this show just enthusiastically embraces its love of pop culture and leans into being, well, nerdy. (I mean that in the most positive of ways.)
THE MASKED SINGER: I hope this experience helped Aubrey O’Day.
CHICAGO FIRE: Oh man, Lizzy having a secret former fiance was not on my bingo card. And the fact she ghosted him?! I really felt terrible for Lizzy that she tried to talk about possible regrets with Violet…but Violet was too hurt over the Carver of it all and projected onto her and Lizzy shut down. And I do feel bad for Violet, too, but yikes to the timing.
I’m glad Carver is taking care of himself, now, but this episode made me even more confused by how they’re handling his recovery storyline; it feels like we, as the audience, are missing a lot, so it’s largely just exposition.
The best part of the hour, though, was Kidd’s pep talk to Herrmann. She’s right: Being a good leader means you have people who want to work for you. Herrmann’s team would fight for him, and that’s important.
THE FLOOR: Oh, it’s interesting that they let people volunteer to be a part of the randomized group. After Matthew put himself out there and lost, I wonder if that will make people think twice before doing that in the future. (But, also, if Clint hadn’t won, he probably would have kicked himself forever for passing on SEABISCUIT when he knew the answer.)
But, wow, the yoga pose category was hard. That very easily could have been so lopsided.
CHICAGO P.D.: I don’t know who I need to yell at more for my heartbreak: The CHICAGO P.D. writers or Patrick John Flueger and Jack Coleman. Guys. Give a girl a break. It hurt. But what fantastic performances and writing. (I maintain: Ow.)
It was hard to watch Disco Bob in such a bad place. It would have been difficult no matter what, but coming as Ruzek was so stuck with Zoe’s case just added layers to the pain. (As Flueger pointed out in January, Ruzek was trying so hard to give this girl her name/identity back while his father was losing that.) And then Zoe, distraught, asking Ruzek what she was going to do without her dad as Ruzek had been forced to face how far gone his father was? Oh. (I mentioned the pain, right?)
The end was brutal and brilliant, too. Adam trying to explain to Bob that he found a facility for him and it would be for the best, with Bob sitting there, seemingly processing it…only to ask Adam who he was—it was painful, but one of Flueger and Coleman’s best scenes together. There was such a fine line to not oversell it, and they both walked it marvelously. But at least we got to see Adam smiling in the final moments when he was able to reunite Zoe with her grandmother and they learned her birth name: Marie. Just so well done by everyone.
