Shawn Hatosy has had a busy television season, juggling roles on Fox’s RESCUE: HI-SURF, Max’s THE PITT, and NBC’s CHICAGO P.D.…with productions based in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

“In Chicago, you’ve got to get a pretty good coat because it’s freezing, you know what I’m saying?” Hatosy tells Give Me My Remote with a laugh in the video below about his jet-setting year.

While RESCUE: HI-SURF and THE PITT are new shows, Hatosy jumped into the 12th season of CHICAGO P.D. Though his character Deputy Chief Reid was a mysterious figure for much of the first half of the season, it was clear from the start that he had an interest in the Intelligence unit—and its boss, Voight (Jason Beghe).

Now, Reid has made it clear he knows some of the secrets the Intelligence team has been keeping and there’s an uneasy alliance of sorts. ”The thing about Reid is, he’s just uniquely similar to Voight,” Hatosy says. “There’s this fine line of, ‘Where is the line, and are we gonna step over it or are we gonna just destroy it all together?’ So I’ve just enjoyed it. And the process, the way they shoot that show, it just feels very rooted, grounded in this world, which I’m feeling very comfortable in. So it’s been a heck of an experience. I love working with Jason, and I can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for the end.”

With Reid popping in and out of the show this season, the CHICAGO P.D. cast has been vocal about their curiosity about the character’s motivations and end game. And though Hatosy knew some things about Reid, but he’s still learning, too.

“I had a pretty good discussion with [CHICAGO P.D. showrunner] Gwen [Sigan] before the season started, and it was sort of presented as you’re seeing it now,” he says. “But it did take a while to get there. It is such a slow burn in the development of Reid: You see him, at first, and he’s in a scene or two, and he is very much [a] police-police kind of guy, one of the guys. And then we start to reveal a little bit about his history, his backstory, what has happened and led him to be here.”

“And then in episode 8, you get that moment [where] he fully understands that Torres was having that affair, and [Intelligence] all knew about it and covered it up,” Hatosy continues. “So it’s at that moment that you realize Reid is going to use this information to get these guys to do what he needs to do, and that’s his history. So I’m learning [about him] moment to moment.”

The Wednesday, March 5 episode, “Greater Good,” brings Reid back into the mix, while also delivering new insight into the character.

“I was really excited to see episode 15 because it is a real heavy episode for Reid; you get to learn a little bit more about who he is and what his origin story is,” Hatosy previews. “And I’m excited, man. It was nice to mix it up with Jason. We had a lot of fun when we [shot] this.”
