CHICAGO FIRE’s Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) spent the Wednesday, March 5 episode, “Too Close,” thinking about the perfect anniversary gift to give his wife, Monica (KaDee Strickland), but the planned celebration was derailed by tragedy: Monica was killed.

Things started off promisingly, albeit not perfect, as Pascal learned the couple was going to spend their anniversary with Monica’s sister, Olivia; Monica came to the firehouse later and said she postponed that dinner so she and Pascal could celebrate their 15 years together alone. Monica’s trip to the firehouse also led Mouch (Christian Stolte) to offer a suggestion to Pascal for a gift: A watch.

Later, Pascal skipped out of work early on his anniversary, and Firehouse 51 went to the scene of a car crash. As they cut into one of the cars and realized the person was in serious medical distress, Mouch was finally able to see the patient they were treating: Monica.

Mouch joined the EMTs on the trek to the hospital, while Pascal waited for his wife at the restaurant. As Violet (Hanako Greensmith) worked on Monica, Mouch got through to Pascal with an urgent message: “Chief, you need to come to Med,” he said said. “Monica’s here.”

“She’s going to be okay, she’s strong,” Pascal told himself, out loud, when he arrived at the hospital. But it was too late…she was gone. A stunned, emotional Pascal collapsed at Monica’s bedside.

“The one thing we learned pretty quick about Pascal was that he and Monica had a very intense, complicated relationship,” CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Andrea Newman tells Give Me My Remote via email. “In many ways, she was his weak spot—he’d do anything for her, and to protect her, and in some risky, dangerous ways. Now that the worst imaginable thing has happened, how will he handle it?”

“We really wanted to explore pushing Pascal to the edge, and how that affects 51,” she continues. “Will it bring him closer to the group, or will it blow everything up? Dermot is such an amazing actor, I think the audience will really be swept away with the places he takes Pascal in this last part of the season!”
