Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

THE MASKED SINGER: Space Ranger sounds so familiar…

CHICAGO MED: To start off with, holy…I did not see that Frost twist coming prior to this episode, but my stomach was turning for him as soon as he rushed to the bathroom and got sick. I’m so deeply sad for him that he is still seemingly a bit in denial (or, at least, protecting his abuser in his conversation with Maggie); I hope he can get some healing.

But, man, the Ripley storyline was so well done. On paper, it sounded interesting, but you still needed a lot of things to work in order for it to be as effective as it was. The guest cast was fantastic. (And the “Winnie the Pooh” song destroyed me.) The crew made it so we felt the confined space almost as much as the characters did. The writing was sharp; emotional, but not crossing the line to cheesy. And, man, those actors. We’ve seen a lot of them do incredible work over the years (and, heck, Christian Stolte just had a gutting performance during the crossover), but wow. I was emotional over basically everything once Ripley got trapped in the hole, with the Mouch-Ripley conversation being both funny and sweet…and then Goodwin told the hospital that Ripley was trapped and Charles rushed over.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Charles-Ripley dynamic (Oliver Platt and Luke Mitchell have done a fantastic job of establishing them in the present day, after their complicated off-screen history), but, wow, I did not expect that call to be the one to make me cry. Even knowing that Ripley would be okay, it still absolutely gutted me to see Charles so desperate for Ripley to survive, and Ripley basically at peace with it being his time.

I’m also really glad the show continues to have Archer be a genuinely good friend to Asher. His awareness that she would want to know what had happened with Ripley, and making sure she knew ASAP, was so kind and selfless. Asher’s reasons for breaking up with Ripley were valid, so I’m curious what, if anything, this near-death experience (and her subsequent “I love you, too”) will mean for them now.

WILD CARDS: I really love that we got to spend some time with Max and her friend. I’ve missed Max and Ellis the past couple of episodes, to be clear, but Max has really primarily come into Ellis’ world. (Outside of her father.) Every time we get insight into her life before this new journey, it gives an interesting new layer to who she was then and how she’s evolving now. And in this case, a friend who felt left behind was another good way to see Max both indulge in a bit of her old side, while also showcasing how much she has changed, too.

CHICAGO FIRE: It was a very good/effective promo, but I always wonder how teasing the final moments of an episode impacts the viewing experience. Especially since the death, here, wasn’t even in play until the final ten minutes, and the actual death reveal occurred in the final moments.

Anyway. I wish we had gotten a bit more of Pascal and Monica before this happened, but Dermot Mulroney was fantastic as Pascal moved from grim hope to bleak despair. (And the juxtaposition between Pascal sitting at the restaurant waiting for his wife with Firehouse 51 trying to save her life was painful. Ouch.) We know their relationship was a lot, but they also had 15 years together. Pascal is going to spiral in the aftermath, especially (I assume) because she was on the way to a dinner he pushed for to celebrate their anniversary. (I’m also very curious if this leads to him bowing out of the chief job at some point, leading the way for Herrmann or Mouch to take over.)

And, uh, I’m concerned about the Damon of it all. We spent a lot of time with those other firefighters; beyond just seeing how terrible they were to Damon, I worry about what that will mean for our guys.

On a lighter note, I am absolutely thrilled that Kidd and Severide got the approval to be adoptive parents. I can’t wait to see what’s next for them.

THE FLOOR: I don’t know how statistically likely it was to happen, but it’s very funny we got TV moms and fathers as separate categories in the same episode. (Also, I was surprised by some of the choices. Like, yes, Midge is a mother, but I was shocked to see THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL there.) But it was funny that it felt like the writers looked at a number of TV parents and just used each counterpart in their respective category; we got a lot of shows overlapping there.

I don’t like rooting against contestants on this, but, uh, yeah, Steve’s hubris was sure something. It was funny that Megan beat him in collectibles and American Girl dolls ended up being what took him out.

Man, I did feel terrible for Wyatt, though. Going against Brian in the category of directors was going to be difficult no matter what, but he had no choice in the matter and really had no chance. (As soon as Wyatt didn’t know Spielberg, I felt dread for him.) But congrats to Brian for his incredible run so far. I’m so curious how far he can go.

CHICAGO P.D.: More than almost anything, I’m curious/concerned about Reid so willingly confessing his misdeeds or unethical behavior to Voight. Does he really believe they’re so similar Voight won’t turn on him? He seems too smart for that, especially since he threatened Intelligence and Voight does not play about his team. So what’s the play here? Is he trying to lull him into a sense of false security and get even more intel? Something deeper/more sinister? And how bad are things going to get for Voight and Chapman as they try and take him down?
