About Last Night…MATLOCK, GREY’S ANATOMY, THE PITT, and More

Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball; The Pitt. Season 1 – Episode 10. Robby busts Langdon for stealing pills; he sends him home. (Warrick Page/MAX)
Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!
NEXT LEVEL CHEF: Oh man, I can’t believe Mistie didn’t make the platform. Her dish looked incredible and the fact it ultimately helped lead to her exit? Man, that sucks.
Richard sending in his number one choice to the final battle was wild, though. Ballsy, and it clearly worked here, but quite a risk and I imagine it won’t work in his favor every time…
9-1-1: I wanted to like the Maddie storyline more than I did. First of all, it felt very obvious what the final twist would be given you’re not going to bring Abigail Spencer into the show for what we saw before the kidnapping. However, the seriousness of that was immediately undercut by the rest of the episode. Sometimes it works! But this felt like tonal whiplash, in a way that detracted from both parts of the show.
I feel terrible for Buck that he is going through so much (and, man, losing the dog was just salt in the wound), but I’m also glad that Eddie made it clear his son was his top priority. Obviously, Buck and Eddie care about each other, but Eddie being so removed from Christopher’s life has been depressing. At least Buck and Eddie made up…but, Eddie, come on…you didn’t realize Freddie Fakeman might not be legit?!
GHOSTS: Oh, Trevor. Don’t pay off critics! (And yikes to that critic who took the bribe.) I know Trevor did it for nice reasons, but I absolutely get Jay’s concerns about it. Glad he got the good review, though.
For as many jokes about Alberta’s power, how lovely that it ended up saving the day here. I absolutely understand how the ghosts misread the situation, but I’m glad they didn’t accidentally destroy the engagement over it.
But, uh, also, we got a new ghost?! (Good luck to him.)
MATLOCK: Since basically the first handful of episodes, I’ve been worried that Olympia would ultimately end up being the one Matty was looking for. Not because her character felt like she’d be the one, but because it would hurt the most and, arguably, we care the most about her/her relationship with Matty.
Do I necessarily trust this reveal? No. At least not entirely. We still have a handful of episodes to go this season and the show is full of twists and turns. But I think Dream!Olympia telling Matty she’s been telling herself the wrong story was important because Matty did let her feelings get in the way of exploring every avenue.
The parallel of Matty’s quest to an addiction was interesting, too. There’s definitely truth to it, and it brings up the question of what she’ll do if/when she gets answers. Not in the context of the show, of course—it’s coming back for season 2, I’m sure she’ll be involved in the law firm, in some capacity, at some point—but this quest has consumed Matty and her family. What will they do when the bulk of their time is not obsessing over this? They want/need answers, but the end of this mission will be another loss for them, too.
DOCTOR ODYSSEY: I assumed the shark attack thing would be silly, but, uh…yeah. Sure.
I don’t love them playing into the misunderstanding trope with Max and Avery. The situation has been so messy already that this just feels like a hat on 17 other hats.
ELSBETH: I’m sure it will only be temporary, but the idea of losing Kaya and Elsbeth’s partnership makes me so, so sad.
GREY’S ANATOMY: My goodness I love and respect how much this show loves and respects its own history. Bailey talking to Link about her first labor experience made me nostalgic for the early days of this show, but also added emotional weight to her message: She knew what it was like to deal with a traumatic situation while the person who was caring for her was also going through a trauma. Yes, Link was scared, but as Bailey put it, he needed to pull himself together so Jo could actually feel safe enough to fall apart. It was the kindest thing Bailey could have done for them both.
Ben also stepped up for Adams with his PTSD. Ben clocking it instantly and helping him through it—while also not infantilizing him in the aftermath—was lovely.
(I am worried about Jules.)
THE PITT: LANGDON?! Come on, man!!! I can’t believe Santos was correct.
This is an instance/storyline where the format of the show makes things even more interesting/messy. Is Langdon going to leave/be gone for the rest of the season? Will he refuse and show up in a few hours, hoping Robby has calmed down? But, man, I’m sad for everyone. Sad for Langdon, who clearly is in denial. Sad for Robby, who was in denial and is now betrayed. Sad for Mel because he truly seemed like he could be an incredible mentor for her. Sad for me/us because WTF, man?!?!
I remain enraged for Dana, but I’m also glad the show highlighted that it wasn’t the first attack on a medical professional on the team. (And horrified it was necessary.)
It’s kind of gutting to remember Collins is still doing her damn job in the aftermath of a life-changing tragedy she’s largely keeping quiet. I’m glad we got a small, quiet beat acknowledging that this episode. But also oy to McKay’s ex and his antics.
(The gossiping about who was sleeping with each other, however, made me laugh out loud.)
