GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY delivered a new clue about who the murder victim—aka “Quiche”—might be with the Sunday, March 16 episode, “Force of Nature.”
In the six-month flash forward, only a handful of people have been seen post-murder: Notably, Alice (AnnaSophia Robb), Brett (Ben Rappaport), Catherine (Aja Naomi King), Birdie (Melissa Fumero), and Joel (Matthew Davis) have been shown trying to keep the murder (and Quiche’s burial) quiet.
But “Force of Nature,” showed a bit from the hours before the cataclysmic event. Alice’s husband, Doug (Alexander Hodge), was livid when he confronted her about a job acceptance letter for New York Magazine. (A far cry from the present-time scenes when Alice and Doug had seemed to reconcile after their recent marriage strains.) Alice insisted it was a mistake, she hadn’t applied to it…and Brett admitted he put Alice up for it.
Doug and Brett started fighting, with Doug insisting Alice pick between her husband or her best friend. The feud turned physical, with the men crashing into furniture and shattered glass everywhere. Later, post-murder, Brett was questioned by the cops about the fight and he asked if he was in trouble—and the cop said it would depend on what Doug said when they found him.
But does that mean Doug is Quiche? That’s TBD. And the cast was in the dark about Quiche’s identity, too.
“[Creators] Bill [Krebs] and Jenna [Bans] were great at keeping everyone in the dark,” Davis tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “No one knew. No one knew until we get to a particular episode and learn who it is…So for a long time, we just didn’t know.”
As one of the few characters safe, Davis tried to convince the showrunners to loop him in. “I tried to pitch to Bill and Jenna, ‘She just confessed to me who it is. Like, I should know. Of all the people who should know, it’s me.’ But they’re like, ‘No, we’re not gonna tell you,’” he recalls with a laugh. “It’s such a fascinating part of the show in many ways. I don’t want to tease it out too much, because I don’t want to obviously spoil anything. But it’s compelling, it’s shocking…and the resolution to it all is so satisfying. It’s weird, it’s great.”
