Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

AMERICAN IDOL: It remains so ballsy to sing to the judges’ songs in front of them. And yet we got two pretty decent renditions last night.

As much fun as it is when someone comes in and is instantly, clearly, a star, I think there’s something maybe even more special when someone comes in and actually needs a bit of mentoring and the judges get to it. Josh King was absolutely talented from the jump, but the judges were correct that there were times he was doing too much. Hopefully, he’ll take their advice to heart.

I was thinking last episode how surreal it is how far the show has come since its early years. Back then, you never knew if the person would be an incredible singer or someone so bad they might go viral. The STFU audition was at least a good middle ground. Obviously not a singer/song/audition that would move forward, but she was in on the joke versus being crushed. (Also, that song might be a whole mood for 2025.)

But, damn, Filo. I got actual chills when watching his audition for the first time. (And his mother! Aww.) I saw his Platinum Ticket moment on New Year’s Eve, but also had the thought as it was happening that I would have no clue who he was when the show actually aired. I was correct. But, wow, so deserved. An easy front-runner for me.

THE EQUALIZER: Oh, this was a fun episode. A quest for secret treasure could have been super cheesy, or dreadfully self-serious, but this was a really good mix of having fun with it while acknowledging the gravity of their mission.

Delilah seemed really impacted by Tyrese’s tenuous home situation. To be clear, she was absolutely correct to be upset and traumatized he pulled a gun on her; it makes no difference he had no intention of pulling a gun on her. He still did a deeply irresponsible thing and he could have accidentally killed her. And then you add in her PTSD? Yeah. She’s correct to be upset. But she also very clearly thawed when she saw how he was trying to keep his family intact and I’m really curious if the situation continues and/or if she loops in her mom to somehow help.

I’m really glad we’re getting Robyn and Dante as a real couple and dealing with genuine new couple issues versus manufactured BS. They’re parents, which means no matter how right they feel as a unit, there’s a lot more to juggle. This is a good way to make it not entirely roses and sunshine without dragging everything down with false stop-starts.

GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY: Hahaha, Catherine calling out everyone else’s scandals made me laugh out loud. Good for her.

Oh God, I can’t believe Brett applied for a job on Alice’s behalf. I don’t blame Doug for being upset, even though he’s clearly crossed a billion lines, too. I’m also not sure if we should believe that Doug may be Quiche? I feel like Alice and Brett would have been more upset in the immediate aftermath. (It also feels a little too soon to have a real ID.)

[Here’s what GROSSE POINTE star Matthew Davis shared about the Quiche mystery.]

$100,000 PYRAMID: Okay, this was a great set of games because all four of the celebrities really did well. But, I’m sorry, things that disappear was a hard category to try and make clues for. I don’t even know where I would have started with that.
