Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!
THE SIMPSONS: I love that Marge had a relatively healthy way to get her anger and stress out. She’s so frequently the only (real) adult in the family; that woman deserved a safe stress outlet. I also kind of love that Shauna was her blackmailer because that’s a dynamic we so, so, so rarely see; there were a dozen other names I was contemplating. And it worked.
FAMILY GUY: I’m actually really glad Quagmire’s librarian girlfriend was so entirely out of his league. He was smitten but also not, uh, up to the task with her. A real pleasant flip from how I expected things to go.
THE LAST OF US: I get it, but, man, I’m so sad about Ellie and Joel’s estrangement.
I was also thrilled about Joel going to therapy…until it was revealed he was getting therapy from the wife of a man he killed. (Uh, awkward on every single level.) But Pedro Pascal and Catherine O’Hara were absolutely phenomenal; it was my favorite scene of the series so far. (That being said: The “I saved her moment” may have caused the moment dramatic amount of emotions in my notes. Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch.)
Ellie and Dina were very cute, but Ellie also feels like a livewire right now. She’s rebelling, being reckless (yelling about being immune…oy), and also kind of quietly having to shoulder too much solo. (Having to hide her secret by disguising the marks by cutting herself? Oh, Ellie. I wish the world was better for you.)
WATSON: This was my favorite episode of the series so far. The work that Eve Harlow and Rochelle Aytes did when Ingrid lost it at Mary? Oh, it was fantastic. What absolute powerhouses.
And how absolutely tragic Ingrid and Mary’s lives are so intertwined in such a horrible, world-altering way. And, uh, wow to Ingrid killing her dad. I didn’t see that coming.
[For more on the hour, here’s what Eve Harlow and Rochelle Aytes shared.]
THE GREAT NORTH: Judy?! It made sense, but how impressively diabolical, especially since she sacrificed her own day off for revenge. Good job at cracking the case, Moon.
And, hey, good for Beef for doing well post-break-up.
THE EQUALIZER: Liza Lapira was fantastic as Mel battled with PTS. An absolute highlight of the episode.
But this was an hour that seemed to echo the issues I had with some of the earlier season installments—the storylines (which were all good/interesting) split focus in a way that didn’t seem to actually benefit any of them.
THE $100,000 PYRAMID: A rough episode with multiple answers where it felt difficult to make clues where you didn’t utilize the word. (And we saw multiple people get buzzed out for that.) “Insert” was a hard clue on that front, but oh my God to NSFW attempt. Ana Gasteyer really is so good at this game, though.
I’m sure he feels terrible about it, but Scott Wolf not getting “casino jobs” killed me.
