Mazel tov! GHOSTS’ Trevor (Asher Grodman) is officially a father.

The ghost got the surprise of his afterlife on the Thursday, April 17 episode of the CBS comedy, “Pinkus Returns,” when Pinkus (Richie Keen) came by the Woodstone Mansion with his daughter, Abby (Gideon Adlon). But Pinkus had a secret he was almost ready to reveal to his daughter: He wasn’t her biological father; Trevor was.

Trevor, however, was impatient and utilized his ghost powers to try and send Pinkus a text—with Sam’s (Rose McIver) phone—to talk to Abby about her paternity. Instead, he sent the text to Abby.

Though the young woman was thrown, there was an unexpected upside: Trevor was able to find out a few things about his biological daughter and Abby was able to ask Sam for insight about Trevor. (Sam prefaced it by saying she had heard her tidbits at the recent memorial for Trevor on the property.)

But will this change things for Trevor? Grodman talks with Give Me My Remote about the twist and what’s to come.

What conversations did you have with the showrunners when they told you about this episode?
Well, I knew this was a possibility because our showrunners invited us all to come into the writers’ room, one by one, before last season, just to kind of give us a sense of what they were thinking and see if we had any thoughts.

So Trevor having a son or daughter was on their radar. [It] was kind of on their list of things they wanted to explore. And when the script came out, I think most of the conversations we had were I brought up that I thought it was very interesting to kind of play with Trevor—and I hope that this kind of comes through—having the realization that Pinkus is a better father than he would have been.

Look, our show is a very unique concept. It’s a very unique world that we’ve built with this show because of the concept, and when we can have the discoveries that are not usually the run-of-the-mill things that people deal with, that’s always very exciting. So him watching the world that he left behind, and how it has unfolded, whereas most of these ghosts are always trying to get in there—Trevor coming to the realization that it’s better off that he wasn’t there I think is a very interesting thing. So that was something that I shared with them.

And then the other thing I think we talked about a lot was that realization comes from how maturely Abby handles the crisis that Trevor brings into her life. And…I [also] talked with our showrunners about the Trevor versus Sam thing, and how what Trevor’s done here really put Sam in a very difficult situation. Sam is constantly doing lovely things for these ghosts, and we’re kind of running all over her. So the idea of Trevor really kind of being in the wrong, I thought, was very interesting. And Sam standing up for herself.

Trevor is a ghost who can impact the living world given his use of technology. How much is that coming to play when his daughter leaves the premises? Are we seeing him keep track of her or contact her?
I can’t answer that. But I will say that if there is something that can be done with the internet, Trevor will be doing it. He will do it. So I don’t know where we’re headed. I don’t know what’s coming, but I would say all of the above is very possible.

How much was this impacting him beyond this episode?
It’s so funny, because we all talk about these characters and their growth and stuff like that, and there’s definitely an element of that. Absolutely.

At the same time, I would contend that some of the greatest joys of this show is watching someone grow and then, in an instant, snapping right back to what they were. So there is always some kind of development of these ghosts who are learning how to be with each other and how to deal with eternity together, and the prospect of getting sucked off one day or going down on everyone. But I do think they are who they are, and that’s what we kind of love about them. And the relationships that they have with other ghosts kind of both push them towards some growth, but also really pull them back to their own worst instincts.

Something that’s kind of fun in this episode is Trevor wants something, and the other ghosts are, like, “This a bad idea. What you’re doing is a bad idea.” So that’s a fun dynamic to play with. We do want to see these guys develop a little bit, but I think there’s the real thrill and joy of the show is watching us make mistakes.

There’s now a trio of fathers in the house. Does their shared fatherhood come up among the ghosts in the rest of the season?
I’m sure we will be playing with that. And there’s a trio of fathers, and there’s also at least one mother out there—Hetty…So I’m sure we will. Something that the show does really well: The concept of this show is that it’s a show about death, so we’re comedy about death—so it’s funny—but we’re dealing with big human issues, but through the lens of people who are literally trapped in their room like eight-year-olds. And so we’re going to, I’m sure, deal with complicated issues through a very immature lens. So I’m sure they will be bragging and competing and all those things. I think you can count on that.

You had a really lovely dynamic with Adlon. What can you share about building that together, especially given the limitations for how much you could actually interact?
Gideon is great. She was such a pleasure to work with, and has so much ease; even just being around her, you feel all the muscles in your body just, like, relax. She’s got a real ease to her, which was so fun.

We tried to find little moments of kind of mirroring each other…I was very interested in Trevor really just being captivated by the idea of seeing a part of him outside of himself. And then both seeing the things in her that remind him of himself [and those] that are not like him. So Gideon couldn’t have been more fun to work with in that regard. And she’s just magnetic in everything she does. So I think she just really killed it. Yeah, it was fantastic.

What do you think it will mean to Trevor, long-term, to have this legacy out there living on beyond his own afterlife?
You said this earlier, but Trevor, I think more than any of the ghosts, in part because of his proximity to the world, and in part because of his power, really is still very involved in the living world. He’s got this job and he’s making a lot of money. And he’s got these co-workers, and now he’s got a daughter. He’s got this legendary story about him that’s out in the world and changing the face of finance. So there’s a lot. It’s a funny thing. As the seasons have gone by, Trevor’s connection to the real world has kind of increased. He’s got Bela running around out there. His fingerprints, his influence, on the real world is increasing. So we’ll see what he does with those things.
