“Partner” – After a young girl goes missing in Queens, the team discovers the kidnappers used her as leverage to carry out a major explosives heist, sending them on a hunt for the dangerous culprits. Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
FBI: Yes, it was a wildly action-packed episode, but the emotional beats were everything here/made the hour for me.
Most importantly, Maggie finally addressing the Ella of it all was fantastic. That was a huge loss she endured, and, yeah, she has a new love now (and Joel seems to be a great match for her), but that doesn’t take away what she went through this season. It doesn’t take away the pain and the hopes she had for the future. It doesn’t take away the sacrifice she made. And Maggie allowing herself to get really mad for a moment and pointing out this life-or-death moment was why she had to give the girl up was profoundly human.
It was an interesting creative decision to have such a big episode centered on the JOC with Jubal out of town. I get that actors will be missing episodes—and Isobel was obviously fantastic taking charge; she’s the boss, of course she could handle things—but it was definitely distracting at points as I was wondering how the episode would have been with Isobel and Jubal running things. Certainly, he would have echoed Elise and refused to leave, too. It did work for me overall, but it was certainly something that popped into my head multiple times. (I’m also glad the writers had Isobel call Philip to warn him to get out of town. Isobel has something to lose now, and she would want them protected.)
(Not to be dramatic, but Maggie and OA cannot ever leave me. That end scene? Oh my goodness.)
ST. DENIS MEDICAL: This was so much fun. Seeing characters out of their natural element is almost always a joy, but a gala was next level. And Joyce versus Ron was so freaking funny. (Hey, Matt was able to take Serena out on a date! Kind of. He’ll take this win, though.)
THE ROOKIE: Oh my God, the meta elements of this episode. (Alexi Hawley and the writers certainly had some fun at his expense.) And really, really ambitious; there were so many different styles the show had to undertake, directing-wise, to pull this off.
Angela may have been the comedic highlight of the hour for me. Her using Wesley’s money to fund the film and then being delighted in video village? I laughed out loud. And I would watch a Wopez reality show as they bantered about everything. (I’d even take a one-time special as they survived a night in a haunted/not-haunted location.)
I can imagine the big Chenford sequence might be divisive; I’m a bit mixed on it, though leaning toward positive. It’s a bummer we didn’t hear everything said in the drug-induced truth-telling sequence, but they got to express it to each other. Tim being honest about the self-inflicted harm he was trying to do with the break-up–and Lucy making it clear she became collateral damage, too—was important. Yeah, they don’t seem to really remember it, but hopefully being confronted with the footage it’ll at least make them think about where they stand and what they really want to do going forward.
FBI: INTERNATIONAL: As fun as it was to see Smitty and Wes undercover, I’m a bit sad for Smitty her entanglement with their mark’s wife might be the only time the show really gets to explore her love life. This was something the show teed up earlier this season and it would have been interesting to see her go on this journey, however long it took.
On the flip side, I really, really, really hope this is the end of Wes’ father on the show. I know there’s more storytelling there. I get it. Especially since Wes now has a half-sister out there, somewhere. But his father was an abuser and Wes made his boundaries clear. Hopefully, somehow, that’s respected.
FBI: MOST WANTED: There were some really gorgeously shot moments in the hour, especially during the final confrontation. The way they utilized light from the windows was stunning and something I actually noticed.
Outside of that, it was a crazy, twisted case. I’m not entirely sure what the show is doing with Remy and Abby, though. While other storylines are feeling headed toward an end game, it feels like they’ve largely been having weird (unnecessary) drama. Hopefully it all leads somewhere, at some point, by the time the show ends next month.
