CHICAGO P.D.’s Cook (Toya Turner) didn’t have the best experience with her first CI on the Wednesday, April 23 episode of the NBC drama.

In “Name Image Likeness,” Cook recruited Ruby, a dancer, to try and get information about Damone—an up-and-coming athlete who was now a suspect in a robbery-homicide.

At first, Ruby seemed to be going along with things: She danced for Damone and was wearing Intelligence’s wire. But when he told her he loved her, the feed went out, and Cook made the call for the team to tail them.

When they caught up with Ruby, she insisted she didn’t touch the wire—and Damone was innocent. Instead, she says it was the team’s equipment manager.

But Ruby was lying: Instead, Intelligence the murder weapon and arrested Damone and Ruby.

“I think it chips away at her just a little bit,” Turner tells Give Me My Remote of Cook’s first CI not going as planned. “Going back to [Cook’s] undercover [operation], that didn’t really go that great either. It’s just a reality check that she isn’t always going to get [it] right in this unit. Everything isn’t always going to go perfect.”

“But I also think it’s the unit reaction to these things [that matter],” she continues. “I think when she was working previously, everything she did, every mistake she made, no matter how small it was, it was detrimental. It was like the end, you know what I mean? She was in fear that she was gonna lose everything, no matter how small. She couldn’t grow, she couldn’t thrive. She was just surviving in whatever team she was in. So I think the thing that she learns in this unit is that you can make mistakes and you will get things wrong, but it’s not the end; we’re here with you. We’re here to stick by you, which I think is really nice.”

After her hard case, Cook also reached out to her mother, after previously sending her to voicemail.

“It kind of connects us to giving another chance, second chances,” Turner says of Cook bridging the gap with her estranged mom. “Just giving them an opportunity to show them that they changed, or show them that they can do better. Which I only think that she’s learning because of the opportunities she keeps getting in the unit. I think it reflects that.”
